Liquid Glass ‘isn’t going anywhere’ in iOS 27 — but there’s good news for its readability

Liquid Glass will reportedly remain a feature of iOS 27Apple is developing a system-wide slider to control its intensityiOS 27 will prioritize performance and stability over flashy featuresUnless you’re running with an outdated version of iOS on your iPhone, you’ll know that Apple dramatically overhauled the appearance of its operating systems in 2025, and the company’s Liquid Glass interface looks set to remain a feature of iOS 27.In his latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg tipster Mark Gurman claimed that Liquid Glass “isn’t going anywhere anytime soon” despite early teething problems surrounding the interface’s readability and the surprise departure of Apple’s top software design brass at the end of last year.Instead, the company will reportedly focus on performance improvements and stability in iOS 27, as well as the long-awaited overhaul of Siri and its integration with Google Gemini. “There isn’t much time to ditch Liquid Glass even if [Apple] wanted to,” Gurman joked.Article continues below

There is, however, a silver lining for those who take umbrage with Liquid Glass’ occasionally unreadable widgets, menus, and app icons: according to Gurman, Apple could introduce a system-wide slider that allows users to finely control the intensity of Liquid Glass in iOS 27.Apple was able to implement such a feature for the clock on the Lock Screen during the development of iOS 26, but “ran into engineering challenges when trying to extend it across the entire system.”If the company can figure out a way to make this intensity slider apply to elements like app folders, app icons, and navigation bars simultaneously, then iPhone users will have much more control over the appearance of Liquid Glass across their iPhone.

Liquid Glass features translucent menus, widgets, and app icons (Image credit: Apple)Of course, users do already have several Liquid Glass-altering settings at their disposal, including ‘Increase Contrast’, which makes interface elements more defined, and ‘Reduce Transparency’, which — surprise! — removes almost all the translucency from iOS 26.Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more.Apple’s upcoming iOS 26.4 update will also add the option to disable Liquid Glass highlights, so the company is clearly aware that its new translucent interface — at least in its default state — isn’t working for everyone. A system-wide slider, though, seems like an upgrade on all three of those settings. In iOS 27, then, Apple sounds like it’ll be doubling down on Liquid Glass customization while prioritizing under-the-hood stability, Mac OS X Snow Leopard-style. And, in truth, we’re more than happy for the company to focus on experience-improving bug fixes over experience-altering design changes this year.Apple is expected to announce iOS 27 at WWDC 2026 in June, with the new operating system set to debut in the iPhone 18 Pro line in September.Follow TechRadar on Google News and add us as a preferred source to get our expert news, reviews, and opinion in your feeds. We just got our first look at Samsung One UI 9 — a build for the major software upgrade has appeared for the Galaxy S26 Ultra

The first build of One UI 9 has appearedWe also have screenshots from the softwareExpect a launch sometime later in 2026We haven’t yet seen a wider rollout of the One UI 8.5 software that made its debut on the Samsung Galaxy S26 phones (unveiled at the end of February), but it seems progress is being made on One UI 9 too — as the first build of the update has just shown up.As tipster Tarun Vats reports, there is now an official One UI 9 build on Samsung’s servers – and the folks at SamMobile have been able to get it up and running on a phone. It’s an important milestone in the development of any Android update, and worth noting. The same source goes on to say that development will follow the same timeline as we saw last year with One UI 8 (based on Android 16). You may remember that after months of beta testing, it launched in July 2025 with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7.Article continues below

Older phones started to get One UI 8 from September 2025, so expect the same sort of cadence throughout 2026. It may not be too long before a One UI 9 beta program opens up (though you’ll probably need a newer Samsung phone to access it). Here’s what’s comingBREAKING The first internal One UI 9 test build for the Galaxy S26 Series has been spotted on the server today. 👀Build Version:S948BXXU1BZC5/S948BOXM1BZC5/ S948BXXU1BZC5Samsung has officially started One UI 9 development, following same timeline as last year.Repost 🔄 pic.twitter.com/1DyxBLb2X4March 16, 2026At this early stage, the screenshots shared by SamMobile don’t show much in the way of chances, but we know One UI 9 is going to be based on Android 17, and so that gives us some clues about what might be coming down the pipe with this major update.Android 17 is already in beta testing on Pixel phones, and there are some interesting upgrades on the way: better support for lock screen widgets and app windowing for example, as well as improvements to how Android looks on less typical screen sizes. It also seems as though Android 17 will support an iOS-like notification tweak, which means you’ll be able to swipe down from the top left corner to show your notifications, and swipe down from the top right corner to show the Quick Settings.Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more.No doubt there’s more to come with Android 17 ahead of its grand unveiling at Google I/O 2026 in May as the Android 17 beta program continues. As usual, Samsung will apply its own tweaks and enhancements on top of Google’s codebase as well.Follow TechRadar on Google News and add us as a preferred source to get our expert news, reviews, and opinion in your feeds. UK businesses are putting themselves at risk due to poor cyber hygiene

SailPoint report shows UK firms neglect identity security 77% fail to deactivate ex-employee accounts, fueling credential abuseOutdated manual processes leave thousands of users and AI agents unmanagedBusinesses in the UK are putting themselves at plenty of risk, thanks to poor cyber-hygiene and not paying enough attention to identity and access management. This is according to a new report from SailPoint, based on a survey of 333 IT decision makers from large organizations in the country. The survey found that the vast majority of businesses (77%) do not immediately deactivate digital accounts for people who leave the organization. This creates a security gap that can be abused not just by former employees (who can steal sensitive files and transfer them to a different company), but also by cybercriminals, since these accounts are unmonitored and thus practically invisible.SailPoint says the problem is even worse than it seems, since a fifth (21%) of the entire UK workforce swapped jobs last year. It also said that incidents stemming from compromised credentials surged by 160% year-on-year, showing just how great the risk really is.Article continues below

Broad access and swelling accountsBut the problems don’t start when employees leave. They start a lot earlier, research has shown, since more than a third (34%) of surveyed businesses admitted to knowingly granting broader access to users. At the same time, the number of user access points organizations manage on a daily basis is swelling. Besides new employees going in and out, there are also contractors, partners, and suppliers that the businesses need to monitor. Also, in more recent times, the emergence of automation and agentic AI further complicates things. On average, organisations have nearly 3,000 (2,754) new users in systems each month. More than a quarter (26%) are onboarding up to 250 new employees every month, while a tenth (12%) are adding as many as 10,000 AI agents and machine identities at the same time. Finally, the security processes in place today are severely outdated, SailPoint says. More than a third (28%) still rely on spreadsheets and paperwork to validate employee accounts and responsibilities, and a fifth of AI agents (21%) are still being managed manually.Sign up to the TechRadar Pro newsletter to get all the top news, opinion, features and guidance your business needs to succeed! The best antivirus for all budgetsOur top picks, based on real-world testing and comparisonsFollow TechRadar on Google News and add us as a preferred source to get our expert news, reviews, and opinion in your feeds. This is probably the most powerful external GPU enclosure around right now — Pluggable’s TBT5-AI is the first to explicitly target local LLM and workstation GPU

Thunderbolt 5 bandwidth pushes external GPU hardware closer to workstation territoryLocal AI inference gains attention as cloud costs continue risingDevelopers increasingly explore running language models directly on personal hardwareExternal GPU enclosures have existed for some time – typically associated with gaming laptops and graphics acceleration tasks that exceed the capabilities of mobile processors.Plugable’s newly released TBT5-AI belongs to this category, but introduces a design focused on connecting desktop graphics hardware to laptops for local AI workloads. The enclosure provides a full-length PCIe x16 slot that allows users to install a desktop-class graphics card inside the external chassis.Article continues below

Desktop-class hardware in an external enclosureAn integrated 850-watt power supply delivers the energy required to run high-performance GPUs that would normally only operate inside desktop workstations. For connectivity, this device comes with a single Thunderbolt 5 cable, which permits direct connection with a laptop, and supports up to 80Gbps of bidirectional bandwidth, while a boost mode can increase throughput to 120Gbps for certain workloads.Inside the enclosure, this bandwidth links the installed GPU through PCIe 4.0 x4 lanes, reducing the transfer bottlenecks that limited earlier external GPU designs. In addition to housing the graphics card, the system functions as a hub that expands connectivity for the attached laptop.Sign up to the TechRadar Pro newsletter to get all the top news, opinion, features and guidance your business needs to succeed! It delivers up to 96 watts of charging power while also providing 2.5-gigabit Ethernet networking and several high-speed USB ports.According to Plugable, many engineers increasingly want to keep model processing and data handling within their own systems, and the TBT5-AI offers just that, as it is designed for developers experimenting with local AI inference environments. The device allows developers to run large language models directly on local hardware instead of sending workloads to cloud infrastructure.

It supports common local AI frameworks, including llama.cpp, Hugging Face models, and Nvidia’s NIM inference platform.Plugable chief technology officer Bernie Thompson said the hardware targets industries where protecting sensitive information remains a strict operational requirement.“Data privacy is not a feature but a mandate,” Thompson said, referring to sectors such as healthcare, financial services, and legal organizations.Plugable is also preparing enterprise versions dubbed TBT5-AI16, TBT5-AI32, and TBT5-AI96 that will include bundled graphics processors. These configurations will integrate a software environment called Plugable Chat, described as an air-gapped AI orchestration platform for regulated organizations. The company claims that these systems will shift AI processing away from subscription-based cloud services toward locally controlled computing infrastructure.Priced at $599.95 as a standalone unit, the Plugable TBT5-AI enclosure was officially released a few days ago, and it is now available via Amazon and Plugable.com.Via MacsourcesFollow TechRadar on Google News and add us as a preferred source to get our expert news, reviews, and opinion in your feeds. That’s all folks!
It was a historic Oscars…I mean, it always is. They always find some stat to drag out in the press release to claim so but there were truly some big ones: first woman to win Best Cinematography and first Kpop Best Original Song to name a few. There were some bingo card moments: a Free Palestine moment from Javier Bardem, a tear-filled speech from the Kpop crew and some typical awkward playing off from the band during some awards.Surprises were aplenty too from Chalamet’s snub to F1 officially crowned with an Oscar to the first tie for god knows how long. But you dear reader have been with me through all five plus hours, so I thank you and hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.I’ve been Dan and I’ll speak to you next time.

Most importantly – how did yours truly do?
In short, it wasn’t bad but wasn’t great when it came to my Oscar predictions.17.5 correct out of 24 categories. 72% accuracy…ehhhh. That 0.5 mark for the first tie in Oscar history for a long long time is going to plague a lot of Oscar sweepstakes as Conan astutely pointed out.I suffered for sitting on the fence when it came to Best Picture/Director. I knew PTA would probably get his career flowers but I thought momentum was with Sinners given the latter half of the awards campaign and the historic amount of nominations.Likewise, Jordan was a shock but shouldn’t have been as people were wising up to his incredible career (The Wire, Friday Night Lights, Creed, Fruitvale Station, Black Panther et al). I’ve definitely talked Chalamet down at the extent of mentioning that Jordan was deserving but I would say he – like Chalamet – has given better performances more deserving of recognition.Anyway, an updated list of how I did – if anyone is still reading/interested:Best Picture – Sinners (WRONG – One Battle After Another)Best Director – Paul Thomas Anderson (CORRECT)Best Actor – Timothée Chalamet (WRONG – Michael B. Jordan)Best Actress – Jessie Buckley (CORRECT)Best Supporting Actor – Sean Penn (CORRECT)Best Supporting Actress – Teyana Taylor (WRONG – Amy Madigan)Best Original Screenplay – Sinners (CORRECT)Best Adapted Screenplay – One Battle After Another (CORRECT)Best Animated Feature – KPop Demon Hunters (CORRECT)Best International Feature – Sentimental Value (CORRECT)Best Documentary Feature – The Perfect Neighbour (WRONG – Mr Nobody Against Putin)Best Documentary Short – All the Empty Rooms (CORRECT)Best Live Action Short – Two People Exchanging Saliva (HALF CORRECT – tied with The Singers)Best Animated Short – Butterfly (WRONG – The Girl Who Cried Pearls)Best Original Score – Ludwig Göransson (CORRECT)Best Original Song – Golden (CORRECT)Best Sound – F1 (CORRECT)Best Casting – Sinners (WRONG – One Battle After Another)Best Production Design – Frankenstein (CORRECT)Best Cinematography – Sinners (CORRECT)Best Makeup and Hairstyling – Frankenstein (CORRECT)Best Costume Design – Frankenstein (CORRECT)Best Editing – One Battle After Another (CORRECT)Best Visual Effects – Avatar: Fire and Ash (CORRECT)

The real winner? Films
Cliche as it is to say but the real winner was the film industry. This may be one of the strongest years in recent history – certainly since Barbenheimer – which actually feels like it’s got people going to the cinemas again.Yes, Sinners may have not won all 16 nominations but the fact it got nominated for that many is astounding. It’s a genre film, it’s original property, it’s a majority black film, it’s got a lot to say and it’s – above all – entertaining as hell.Likewise, One Battle After Another won the day which will hopefully mean it gets seen by many more as it was a well documented box office flop – or box office meh – on its gargantuan budget. With beautifully moving films like Hamnet, ambitious projects like Frankenstein and future masterpieces like Sentimental Value getting their moment in the sun too, it does feel like a win all round for cinema. With the exception of Avatar: Fire and Ash, it also saw a near complete rewarding of original films over sequels and franchises. The juries out as to whether F1 and Frankenstein are technically intellectual property (I guess so) but even still a monumental achievement.Well done cinemas, long may they last.

The loser(s)? Timmy
The DiCaprio curse strikes again!Widely seen as the DiCaprio of his generation, Chalamet also appears to be emanating his hero when it comes to failing to win an Oscar early in his career. It’s a narrative that’s been overplayed for sure, but it’s as much his clear desperation to win as well as the Academy not rewarding younger actors (the youngest winner still being a 29-year-old Adrian Brody over 20 years ago).Sadly this meant that Marty Supreme was also the biggest loser of the evening with nine nominations and zero wins! Not as bad as American Hustle, The Irishman and Killers of the Flower Moon which all scored 10 nominations in their respective years with zero wins too.

The final Oscar tally
So, the big battle between Sinners and One Battle After Another saw not just the latter scoop up Best Picture and Director but also win in total awards too.One Battle After Another triumphed with six wins and Sinners followed with a still impressive four.Elsewhere, Frankenstein emerged victorious with three wins and Kpop Demon Hunters scored two wins. This means that every other film with a win only won in that category including Hamnet, Weapons and Sentimental Value.

A fun Conan parody to end the night
In a final skit we see Conan get the ‘job of Oscars host for life’ as he’s lead into an office and murdered horribly a la One Battle After Another’s Sean Penn death. He did a good job of running the show, maybe suffering from second album syndrome slightly, but he would be a safe pair of hands for future ceremonies.

Best Picture goes to…One Battle After Another!
I should’ve gone with the conventional wisdom because One Battle After Another wins Best Picture! There was a moment where it felt like Sinners could’ve taken it but the safer bet won.Congratulations to PTA and the team.

A detailed look ahead at the Best Picture nominees
It’s true that there’s 10 nominees – thanks to the expansion of the category over a decade ago – but there’s only two serious contenders: Sinners and One Battle After Another.Train Dreams and Bugonia? Too under-seen. Sadly judging by the box office these films struggled to find audiences despite being acclaimed by critics to various levels.Sentimental Value and The Secret Agent? Too international. Parasite is still the only international film to win which is still an incredible feat and even with the increasingly more international-friendly makeup of the Academy it feels unlikely to happen again this year.Hamnet? Too sad. While beloved by many, this is the only narrative around it and the Academy will give it one award for Jessie Buckley.Frankenstein? Too mixed reception. Maybe the most divisive of the Best Picture nominees – aside from F1 – del Toro’s latest film was maybe a bit too del Toro for his own good with some loving it – and Elordi receiving a surprising amount of love for his portrayal of the Creature – but many left feeling as cold as the Arctic opening scene. And the Netflix of it all doesn’t help it eitherF1? Too blockbuster-y. There was a significant backlash to it taking up a spot on the list but there’s always one popcorn picture for the masses – Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water etc.Marty Supreme…watch this space. This could actually be a popular third choice in the preferential ballot and if the top two contenders cancel each other out this could sneak in. However, conversation has died off around this masterpiece, aside from Chalamet’s performance, and it’s been interpreted by some corners of the internet as some as a chest-thumping U-S-A film which is a gross misinterpretation of it.Sinners and One Battle After Another. As well as being the most nominated films, the most critically acclaimed films and the most talked about films, these also happen to be two Warner Bros films. The studio may have won this battle but the question remains who will take home the big award? The smart money would be on One Battle After Another with it feeling like a conventional awards winner, a ‘beloved by the industry’ director who’s been around for decades and a timely exploration of America at this current moment wrapped in a thrilling narrative with superb performances. However, Sinners has been nominated for the most Oscars of ALL TIME. 16 nominations, boosted by the new category Best Casting albeit. That doesn’t mean anything necessarily, previous front runners include American Hustle, The Irishman and Killers of the Flower Moon which all went away empty handed and also further affirmed the Academy hates Scorsese. But Sinners is enjoying a strange underdog status despite this historic milestone because it’s being pitted against the favourite in this category One Battle After Another. The trajectory of buzz and recent awards seems to be leaning towards this picture which is even more extraordinary considering how little the Academy rewards ‘genre’ films like this (the last time was del Toro’s Shape of Water). Will the Oscars give Best Picture to a film which features a lot of vampires among some incredible world building? Honestly it’s 50/50 at this point.

2026-03-16T02:33:08.802Z
The Best Actress win we all saw coming
Jessie Buckley had this in the bag from day one. She’s won pretty much 100% of the awards this season with an emotive performance that tugs at the heartstrings and alongside Best Score and Best Song was the only safe bet you could place this Oscars. It’s an incredible role and stands among the all time Best Actress performances. It sadly looks like the only win Hamnet will get but at least it doesn’t leave empty handed.

2026-03-16T02:30:09.520Z
Michael B. Jordan beats Timmy!
Wow, the writing was on the wall but wow.Michael B. Jordan takes the Best Actor win in a move which is both shocking and proof that the Academy really has it in for Timmy. That’s not to take away from Jordan’s win but of the Sinners performances it feels the least deserving. It’s no secret that Timothée Chalamet really wants to win an Oscar. He’s actively said it in a way that has rubbed some people up the wrong way but some people have appreciated for its honesty. He’s certainly been everywhere in an omnipresent awards campaign that may have elevated him above his nominees by a long shot but it’s also made him an easy target. His comments about the ballet and opera being dying art forms may have been blown up by the click bait headlines but they actually didn’t affect how the Academy ultimately decided as the voting deadline had already closed by the time they’d exploded.Oscars love to make promising young actors wait for whatever reason – Denzel Washington, Al Pacino, Leonardo DiCaprio, Dustin Hoffman all had to wait until they were older and had a few nominations under their belt – and Chalamet may have to wait for a lifetime achievement style award in 10 years time.Michael B. Jordan endearingly won at the Actors awards – which like the Oscars was voted by his peers – so this set him up for the duel performance win today. It’s a showy double performance which, not to say it wasn’t deserved, but feels more like a vote against Chalamet rather than a glowing endorsement of Jordan.

PTA wins Best Director!
PTA gives a rather alienating speech about deserving the Oscar, fairly tongue in cheek but considering the room feels quite pro-Coogler you’d think he’d play it safe. It’s true that the Oscars love to reward established directors for films that maybe aren’t as befitting of a Best Picture win – infamously Martin Scorsese for The Departed – but as much as this is a thing, it’s also true that the Oscars has also failed to reward established directors at all – Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock etc. However, Paul Thomas Anderson was thoroughly deserving of the Best Director trophy with an urgent, suspenseful and surprisingly funny film to show for it. And that’s high praise when you look at the other nominees in what may be one of the strongest director lineups in recent years.Truly any of them would have been deserving…but it feels like Sinners could still win Best Picture in maybe a Picture/Director split that – while fairly rare – has had recent precedent: see Ang Lee/Argo, Damien Chazelle/Moonlight, 12 Years A Slave/Alfonso Cuarón.

A Golden night for KPop
The second no-brainer: Golden from Kpop Demon Hunters wins for Best Original Song. The first Kpop song win in Oscar history and the second win of the night for the film.Ironic that the speech for Best Original Song gets played off by the band.

2026-03-16T02:12:57.834Z
Sentimental for Sentimental Value
The first of two big no-brainers: Sentimental Value wins Best International Feature.Trier is genuinely an exciting director and deserving of this win for a masterpiece of a film about dysfunctional family – which he quips is the opposite of what his crew was while making this Norwegian Oscar-winning film.

No to war and Free Palestine
Yes, Javier Bardem! He manages to get the first overtly political message as he presents with a cry of ‘Free Palestine’.At least the Oscars didn’t cut it out like the BAFTA editors.I did predict at the start of this blog that Mark Ruffalo would say something political but I should’ve known it would be Bardem if not him.

Golden plays…just before Best Song
A lovely performance of the earworm from Kpop Demon Hunters: Golden. It feels a bit mean to only feature two songs live this year as opposed to the normal five but honestly the runtime is thankful for it. There’s always questions of why time is being made for skits and waffley speeches but you can’t please all the people all the time. You can scan the QR code to listen to the other original songs apparently. Can’t see many people following the link to listen to Nick Cave’s somber crooning of ‘Train Dreams’ but you never know.

Autumn Durald Arkapaw makes Oscar history!
Finally: the first woman to win Best Cinematography!Asking all the women in the room to stand up is a powerful move and symbolic of the achievement that Autumn Durald Arkapaw has just landed.Putting this historical milestone aside, Sinners is indisputably the best looking film of the year with its slick cinematography during the history of African American music montage deserving the award itself. No sooner had I said the tide was turning towards One Battle After Another…and then Sinners rears its head nipping at the heels of PTA’s epic with the tally rising to 4-3.Don’t miss any of the action with NordVPN.

One Oscar After Another
They say that Best Editing is usually an indication of who will take home Best Picture…this could be big if so!I keep using the phrase ‘richly deserved’ but watching the last 10 minutes of PTA’s latest film you’d be hard pressed to argue against this win. Managing to create one of the most stress inducing sequences of cars going over choppy hills is a miracle that this editor made a reality. The tide feels like it’s shifting towards One Battle After Another…

The Oscar-winning F1
Well, F1 is officially an Oscar winning film. I told you, anything can happen.Joking aside, it’s an easy target and despite supposedly pissing off the film community with its Best Picture nomination (unjustly because you always need one dumb fun blockbuster to draw in an audience) it deserves a win for Best Sound.

Ludwig Göransson secures his third Oscar win
And Best Original Score goes to Ludwig Göransson for Sinners! No surprise but absolutely the right winner and another trophy to add to the Swede’s shelf alongside his one for Black Panther and Oppenheimer.Sinners is now on two wins with One Battle After Another still on three. Things are heating up…

Bridesmaids reunion
It’s nice to see the cast of Bridesmaids on stage 15 years after it was released. It makes sense to get Jimmy Kimmel, the man who was taken off air pretty much directly by the White House, to present arguably the most political category of the night.Again, it’s just enough of a dig at the current administration but curiously no one has called out Trump directly compared to his first term when he was mentioned incessantly at every awards show.

Frankenstein and One Battle After Another both lead the way with three Oscar wins so far each! This clean sweep of Costume, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Production Design will more than likely be the only wins for the del Toro epic but still a good innings in a competitive year.Sinners is lagging behind at the moment in regards to wins with just the one for Original Screenplay but the night is young and the big awards are still to come…

Looking ahead to Best International Feature
Check out my article about how to watch the International Feature lineup this year – which in my humble opinion is the strongest we’ve ever seen – and what I believe is the obvious frontrunner.Sentimental Value hits all the Oscars checklists. A film about a film featuring a famous cast led by Stellan Skarsgärd and Elle Fanning giving incredible performances. It certainly helps having Hollywood names in the international category which voters will not be as familiar with, and it also helps that this film from Trier is a masterpiece which would rightly deserve to take home the trophy for Norway. It Was Just an Accident is an incredibly timely movie, about the oppressive Iranian regime, and had a fascinating history with its director having served time in jail for speaking out and making films criticising said regime. It’s a meticulously crafted film which blends dark humour, suspense and real world horror. The Secret Agent could be an outlier too so who knows…

Hollywood stars lead the extended tributes
It’s been a year of big losses and none were more felt in Hollywood than Rob Reiner.Billy Crystal walks us through the remarkable string of hits that Reiner had – This is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, When Harry Met Sally, The Princess Bride, Misery, A Few Good Men – and his championing of equal marriage rights in America.A very touching montage accompanies this with the likes of Terrance Stamp, Diane Keaton, Val Kilmer, Robert Duvall, Robert Redford, Gene Hackman, Catherine O’Hara also name checked by a visibly moved Rachel McAdams and then Barbra Streisand.

Hot on the heels of his main competition PTA, Sinners writer and director Ryan Coogler wins Original Screenplay!A richly deserved win (again unsurprising) but always humble, Coogler tells the audience to sit down and his cast and crew to stand up.PTA and Coogler both received a rapturous reception for their wins but judging from the room, Coogler may have captured the room in a way that PTA hasn’t…Is it too late for me to change my prediction for Best Director to the Sinners director?

PTA wins his first Oscar!
An industry legend, Paul Thomas Anderson unsurprisingly scoops up his first win of his career and the night with Adapted Screenplay. He dedicates it to his children who he apologises to for the state of the world and hopes they can help save it. Casablanca skit
A fun little skit with Conan and Sterling K. Brown points to the stupidity of reminded audiences of things they know every few minutes. They recreate Casablanca with this in mind and the now immortal line as Brown reminisces: “World War II? That’s the one with Hitler, right?”

Third Oscar Penn-ding…and accepted!
In a baller move, Sean Penn wins for One Battle After Another and doesn’t even show up!The Academy loves a big performance and Sean Penn as Lockjaw goes big. Some truly horrific mouth work, an instantly iconic imitable walk and a performance that balances the line between comedy and drama. He’s got two Oscars in the bag for Mystic River and Milk which may have acted in his favour – he now joins the three timer club with Frances McDormand and Daniel Day Lewis. He had a sudden surge in award wins particularly after it looked like Stellan Skarsgård may be getting his lifetime achievement award moment and some interesting early momentum for Jacob Elordi which may have been crushed by the damp squib which has been Wuthering Heights.

Woahhhhh, it’s a tie!
It’s a tie! The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva both win the Best Live Action Short.Kumail Nanjiani has to reiterate he’s not joking – people naturally think the comedian is having a laugh when he announces a tie. He quips it’s ironic that the live action short will take twice as long. Good stuff.Oscar statisticians will be going into overdrive trying to work out the last time this happened and how many times it has, but it’s happened nevertheless!

One Battle After Another triumphs over Sinners
A slightly lengthy tribute-style presentation as each casting director gets a one minute monologue about how great they are. It’s long overdue to reward them but you wonder if the audience at home will have much interest. One Battle After Another wins over Sinner in the first win for the PTA epic! It’s nice to see this film rewarding the casting of relatively new discoveries – Chase Infiniti and Teyana Taylor – alongside established legends – Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn.Sinners was the slight favourite and arguably Marty Supreme had the most interesting casting choices – the guy from Shark Tank and Tyler, the Creator! – but One Battle After Another triumphs over Sinners…will this be how things go tonight?

Frankenstein begins its technical Oscar sweep
Two awards in quick succession for Guillermo del Toro’s creation!Frankenstein awakens and lumbers towards its first and second wins of the night with Best Costume and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. That wording would make more sense but technically it’s Frankenstein’s Creature that would do the lumbering, Frankenstein is the man behind the monster. Or is Frankenstein the real monster and the Creature just a victim? I digress.Make sure you don’t miss any of the action wherever you are with our guide on how to watch it.

Sinners gets things off to a steamy start
And now a musical performance reminding everyone of the incredible music montage in the middle of Sinners to the live performance and nominated tune ‘I Lied to You’ with Miles Caton .It’s a bit of a mishmash over the stage as they try and showcase all the dance styles and have some cameos from the Sinner cast in a way which makes you realise the skill of the direction and cinematography in the film which does this seamlessly. It’s not quite the musical moment that I’m Just Ken was but it’s a welcome addition. Thankfully there’s just one more song – not all five nominated song performances this year – and it’s the one that’ll probably win: Golden from Kpop Demon Hunters.

A Golden start for KPop Demon Hunters
A fairly predictable Best Picture Feature win here for the phenomenon that was – and is – Kpop Demon Hunters.A very touching speech from the producers about representation and a dedication to Korea…and then they’re played off abruptly but continue anyway. This may be a sign that speeches are going to overrun if the orchestra is too scared to play people off. Amy Madigan takes Supporting Actress!
Wow, Amy Madigan wins! That rare thing happened that the Academy rewarded a genre film performance of a literal witch.Prognosticators – and I – were having palpitations trying to guess who walked away with this golden statue. I’m 0 for 1 so far so not a great start.Teyana Taylor looked like she was having a moment with her brief but memorable appearance in One Battle After Another’s opening…but then in swoops Amy Madigan’s delicious scenery chewing witch in the endlessly watchable sleeper hit of the year Weapons. In the next twist though, Wunmi Mosaku snaps up the BAFTA (which admittedly do favour Brits) and with the tide turning towards Sinners she may have provided an upset. However, Madigan was a worthy winner with a chilling performance for the ages and a very fun speech where she talks about shaving her legs, her first nomination 40 years ago and her husband Ed Harris.

Conan’s monologue kills
Jabs at Timothée’s Opera and Ballet comments, Netflix’s aversion to theatres and subtle references to political events, Conan O’Brien has proved once again why he’s the GOAT.Seamlessly gently ribbing the nominees while setting the tone, fingers crossed for a third appearance from him next year.

It’d be a Sin to give the Oscar to anyone else
The eagle-eyed will have spotted I predicted a Sinner Best Picture win and Paul Thomas Anderson Best Director win. Am I predicting that rare beast of a split for the top prizes or cowardly splitting my chances? Both. But, let’s not forget Sinners leads with an incredible 16 nominations. Sixteen! To put that in perspective that’s the most in Oscar history by not one but two nominations, albeit this includes a new category Best Casting but it’s incredible. A film which came out nowhere near the typical awards season window towards the end of the year and about bloody vampires is the FRONTRUNNER for the Academy Awards. However, despite that and maybe due to the unstoppable juggernaut which One Battle After Another has been most of awards season with 13 nominations, it’s also managed to position itself as the scrappy underdog. It would be a sin for any other film to win, right?

One Sinner After Another
Not since the year of Barbenheimer have two films completely dominated the Oscar conversation. One Battle After A Sinner? One Sinner After Another? Hmmmm there’s not really a good portmanteau for them…It’s pretty much the conventional wisdom that either Sinners or One Battle After Another will bring home the big prizes of Picture, Director, Writing and some of the other acting categories. But who will prevail?

New studies find Brits are the most anxious when it comes to robots — and they don’t want data centers in their back yards either

Over half of UK adults feel uneasy interacting with robots dailyLimited exposure drives anxiety, with only 30% of Britons ever meeting robotsDomestic robots spark the strongest reluctance, especially in home environmentsMore than half of British adults say they feel uneasy around robots, making the UK the most robot-anxious nation globally.A survey by Hexagon across nine markets, involving 18,000 participants, found 52% of UK respondents were concerned about potential problems when interacting with robots. This is higher than the global average of 42%, which experts link partly to the limited exposure many Britons have to robots.Article continues below

Limited exposure fuels public concernLow exposure may be driving the anxiety, as only 30% of Britons report ever encountering a robot in daily life, while the figure is 75% in China.Britons express their strongest reluctance in home environments, with 39% stating they feel uncomfortable about robots in domestic settings. In industrial applications, such as factories and warehouses, robots are slightly more accepted, but comfort levels remain below the global average.Security concerns are the main reason for the high anxiety levels, with 53% citing the risk of robots being hacked or misused as their top worry.Sign up to the TechRadar Pro newsletter to get all the top news, opinion, features and guidance your business needs to succeed! Some Britons (41%) also fear that robots may malfunction and cause physical harm.Observers note that fear often diminishes once people meet a robot in person, particularly smaller, approachable models.“Across the world, people aren’t simply pro-robot or anti-robot. They’re asking where robots belong, what they should do, and what safeguards must come first,” said Burkhard Boeckem, CTO at Hexagon.

“In the UK, the message is especially clear: confidence lags when robots feel distant or unfamiliar. Trust breaks down when robots are pushed into everyday or domestic roles before governance, safeguards, and human control are clearly in place.”Like robots, Britons do not want data centers anywhere near them, although national support for expansion remains high.A survey of over 2,100 UK adults by YouGov reveals that only 44% of Gen Z respondents support a local data center, and 31% actively oppose one even though national support for new facilities reaches 69%.Much of the opposition among younger voters is driven by environmental considerations, including concerns over energy consumption and water usage.Although arguments about job creation and potential economic benefits exist, they are insufficient to outweigh the environmental concerns. This “not in my backyard” attitude implies that local realities may clash with broader national priorities as the UK plans to more than double data center capacity by 2030.Across both robotics and data infrastructure, trust emerges as a central barrier, strongly influencing public perception, acceptance, and resistance.Britons may accept automation in areas where the benefits are clear, including performing hazardous tasks or improving efficiency. But reluctance persists when technologies are unfamiliar or perceived to threaten control.Follow TechRadar on Google News and add us as a preferred source to get our expert news, reviews, and opinion in your feeds. Amazon is rolling out a redesigned Fire TV app

Amazon is starting to roll out its redesigned Fire TV mobile app to customers, the company announced on Thursday. While you could previously only use the app as a backup remote, the updated experience lets you browse and discover content directly from your phone, manage your watchlist on the go, and play titles on your TV from the mobile app.

“The updated app turns smartphones into a second screen for discovering what to watch next, making it easy to add a friend’s show recommendation to a watchlist even when away from home,” Amazon wrote in an email to TechCrunch. “This seamless integration between mobile and TV creates a more flexible and convenient viewing experience for Fire TV customers to find what they want to watch, fast.”

The app is rolling out now in the U.S., Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain, and the U.K.

Amazon says the refreshed look matches the new Fire TV user interface that it launched last month, which was designed to put more focus on content, while also simplifying navigation. The updated user interface introduced rounded corners, varied gradients, consistent typography, and increased spacing between content, while also providing more room for pinned apps.

The top navigation bar has been simplified into categories marked with clear icons for Movies, TV, Live TV, Sports, and News. The search button is more easily accessible to the left of the Home tab.

Within these tabs, Fire TV shows the content you’re already watching alongside recommendations from your subscribed services, organized in rows labeled “For You.” The tabs also feature free movies, top movies and shows, and other paid content you might like.

The changes to the app and the user interface come in response to the surge of streaming content, which has made it harder to keep track of what’s available on each service, requiring platforms like Fire TV to function more as discovery hubs rather than just places to launch streaming apps.

BYD rolls out EV batteries with 5-minute ‘flash charging.’ But there’s a catch.

Chinese automaker BYD unveiled a new battery pack Thursday that the company says is capable of charging from 10% to 70% in five minutes. Taking it to almost 100% takes about four minutes more.

Recharge times like those would nullify concerns about electric vehicles’ charging times — one of the few places where internal combustion engines retain an advantage. Even in bitter cold weather (–4˚ F or –20˚ C), the pack can charge from 20% to 97% in under 12 minutes, according to BYD. The battery pack, known as the Blade Battery 2.0 system, is slated to debut in the Yangwang U7, a full-size luxury sedan.

There is a critical caveat to this eye-popping figure. The Yangwang U7 sedan, or any other future BYD vehicle equipped with this next-generation battery pack, can only reach this ultra-fast charging time when paired with one of the company’s new Flash Charging EV chargers.

Still, BYD is likely counting on this flashy charging tech to boost sales and give it an edge in a price war with other Chinese automakers that are rolling out new and improved EVs at a rapid clip.

The Shenzhen-based company was a darling of Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway holdings for years. The investor bought a 10% stake in the automaker in 2008 for $230 million — long before it became a Tesla rival and household name. Berkshire sold its last shares in 2025, returning more than 20x the original investment.

Today, BYD is the world’s largest manufacturer of EVs — a status that other Chinese automakers and Tesla are keen to change. While BYD still outpaces competitors like LiAuto, Xpeng, Xiaomi, and Zeekr, there has been a recent dip in sales. The company reported that its combined January and February sales volume in 2026 dipped by roughly 36% compared to the year before.

Its next-generation battery system could help it attract new customers and retain existing ones.

Techcrunch event

San Francisco, CA

October 13-15, 2026

The new Blade Battery 2.0 accomplishes the ultra-fast charging feat by using lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP), a chemistry that automakers are betting will help lower the cost of EVs because it avoids the use of pricy metals like cobalt or nickel. Currently, LFP packs cost $81 per kilowatt-hour compared with $128 per kilowatt-hour for NMC, according to BloombergNEF.

Because LFP isn’t as energy dense as other chemistries like nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC), it can’t carry as much energy, which limits range. As a result, Western automakers almost exclusively use LFP cells in their less expensive models. But BYD is betting that by speeding up the charging process, LFP can become acceptable in more than just low-end EVs.

To hit a five-minute charge time, BYD has also developed a new EV charger it calls Flash Charging, which is capable of delivering 1.5 megawatts of electricity. Previously, BYD had rolled out a 1 megawatt charging system for a previous sedan, the Han L, that used two 500 kW charging cables that needed to both be plugged in. In the U.S. and Europe, the fastest chargers tend to top out at 350 kW, though there are an increasing number of 500 kW chargers that are being rolled out.

BYD’s Flash charger stalls have cables draping from overhead towers, which allow the cables to serve either side of the vehicle. It should also make plugging in easier since the cables and charging plug are probably pretty heavy to cope with the amount of power they’re rated to handle. BYD said it has 4,200 Flash charging stations completed throughout China with a goal of adding about 16,000 more by the end of the year, though we should note that the automaker uses the “Flash” name to describe its 1-megawatt chargers, too. It also said it will add grid-scale batteries to the installations to relieve pressure on the grid.

In the U7 full-size sedan, the battery can power the car for just over 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) on the China Light Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), which tends to be optimistic. CLTC overstates range by about 35% compared with the more realistic EPA test cycle. In real world driving, the car would likely be able to cover just over 400 miles on a single charge.

That’s less range than a Lucid Air Grand Touring, which can travel for 512 miles on a full 117 kWh pack, according to the EPA test cycle. But being able to add 240 miles in five minutes could make such comparisons moot.
