The book that I have chosen this week is Magic & Mischief at the Wayside Hotel by Elizabeth Everett

Book Description From Goodreads:

When a magical hotel appears smack-dab in the middle of the most unmagical of worlds, the last thing the residents expect is to fall in love.

Manager of the Number Five Wayside Inn and World Travel Hub, Pax Nomen has one of the easiest jobs in all the known universes, unless you count the occasional plumbing disaster. When Number Five Wayside gets stranded on a non-magical world, even Pax’s trusty Wayside Handbook can’t help him. How is he going to “reboot” the hotel and keep it on its magical journey?

Josie LaChusia is a single mom experiencing debt, having parenting doubts, and tipping dangerously toward depression when an ad pops up on her phone that an apartment is available in a building she’s never seen before.

Pax needs a new guest to restart his hotel, and Josie needs a nudge to restart her life. In a building occupied by faeries, gargoyles, and a gnome with a bad attitude, two souls from very different places come together to create a home like no other.

Why I want to read it:

I think that this sounds like a fun read, and carrying on with my Fantasy themed year, this looks like the perfect addition.

Happy Publication Day! Wild Wager by Sofia Aves

Book Description From Goodreads:

A wounded cowboy billionaire meets his match in a fierce wolf biologist who turns his empty ranch—and guarded heart—upside down.

I built Coyote Falls to hide. From the cameras. The crowds. The accident that left me hollow.

Then my sister’s best friend, Lanie Parker, shows up at my door—wild-cherry hair, cinnamon-sugar scent, Big Sky eyes that see everything I’ve tried to bury. She studies wolves in Alaska’s remotest corners. She’s built for wild places, for a life that’s the opposite of everything I am.

But she looks at me like I’m whole. Like the scars on my skin and the wager I made, which could lose me everything I’ve worked so hard to build, don’t define me. Like this damaged ex-rodeo star might actually be worth saving.

I shouldn’t ask her to stay. Shouldn’t pull her into my empty homestead, my found family of broken cowboys, the refuge I carved from granite and sweat. Shouldn’t touch her when I know damn well I’m riding toward my own destruction in a few weeks.

But shouldn’t and can’t are two different things.

And the only thing I can’t do? Let her go.

This unmissable steamy Western romance from USA Today bestselling author Sofia Aves is perfect for fans of Elsie Silver, Lyla Sage and Elliott Rose.

Book Blogger Hop – Are there genres you read that you feel a little shy about?

Welcome to the Book Blogger Hop! Hosted by Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer this week the prompt is:

Are there genres you read that you feel a little shy about? (Submitted by Billy @ Coffee-Addicted Writer)

No. I read books that I think I will enjoy so I don’t feel shy. Maybe if I didn’t have children I would feel shy about reading children’s books, but as I do, I don’t!

Spicy romance books are an interesting one because if they are too spicy I won’t read them so I don’t feel shy about that.

What about you?

📖 PLOT SUMMARY FROM GOODREADS 📖

She can hop into any novel, she just can’t stay there. Come along with the book witch in this magical and inspiring love letter to reading from the USA Today bestselling author of The Wishing Game.

Rainy March is a proud third-generation book witch, sworn to defend works of fiction from all foes real and imaginary. With her magical umbrella and feline familiar, she jumps into and out of novels to fix malicious alterations and rogue heroes.

Book witches live by a strict Real people belong in the real word; fictional characters belong in works of fiction…. Do not eat, drink, or sleep inside a fictional world, lest you become part of the story. Falling in love with a fictional character? Don’t even think about it.

Which is why Rainy has been forbidden from seeing the Duke of Chicago, the dashing British detective who stars in her favorite mystery series. If she’s ever caught with him again, she’ll be expelled from her book coven—and forced to give up the magical gifts that are as much a part of her as her own name.

But when her beloved grandfather disappears and a priceless book is stolen, there’s only one person she trusts to help her solve the case: the Duke. Their quest takes them through the worlds of Alice in Wonderland, The Great Gatsby, and other classics that will reveal hidden enemies and long-buried family secrets.

💭 THOUGHTS 💭

I was so pleased to be accepted by Netgalley to read this book. Everything about it sounded exciting and it didn’t disappoint.

The writing was light and detailed. I was sucked into the characters’ world with ease and enjoyed being there. There were lots of little bits happening all the time which meant that you had to keep your wits about you. It did, however, all tie up well at the end.

The story was split into 7 “books”. Each “book” had a genre as a title and was then split further into chapters. The chapters were fairly long which meant that you got a good chunk of the story before moving on. There was a lot of information to process, but it was set out in such a way that meant that it didn’t feel overwhelming.

There was a good flow between the chapters and the “books”, making it easy to read.

There was an interesting pace to the book. There were a lot of dead ends and questions being asked which slowed everything down, however we did manage to keep moving forward, gradually finding new leads to follow and finding answers to the questions.

The characters were interesting to read about and I enjoyed following them on their journey. There were some lovely, heartfelt moments between characters which added something extra to the story. The whole story was a bit of an emotional rollercoaster, made possible by the characters.

Lastly the settings. Whilst it was a character focused story, there were some lovely descriptions that really brought the story to life. I would like to read some of the books mentioned in this story!

Overall a wonderfully unique read with some thought provoking moments. I recommend.

⭐Rated 4.5/5 ⭐

Time Travel Thursday

It’s Time Travel Thursday! Hosted by me, this is where you get to relive all those bookish memories! Take a look back at what you were reading this time last year (or the year before or the year before that…) and compare it to what you are reading now!

This Time Last Year I Was Reading:

Death by Leprechaun by Jennifer S Alderson (click for link to my review)

Book Description From Goodreads:

When an old friend is arrested in Dublin, tour guide Lana Hansen will need the luck of the Irish to clear him of the crime.

Lana is thrilled her friend Jeremy and his wife are on her tour to Ireland. The couple are having the time of their lives exploring the country’s rich literary and cultural history, until they run into Guy Smith, a reporter Jeremy recently exposed as a fraud.

A tussle turns into a fight and leaves each man vowing to destroy the other. Yet cross words and dirty looks tell Lana that Jeremy is not the only client on her tour who has a grudge against the reporter.

When Guy is murdered at the same pub Lana’s group is present at, Jeremy is the police’s number one suspect. But did he really murder the reporter? Or was it one of her other guests?

Lana keeps their tour going and her ears open for any clues that might help free her friend. Can she discover the true killer’s identity before their trip to the Emerald Isle draws to a close?

Currently I Am Reading:

The Book Witch by Meg Shaffer (click for link to Goodreads)

Comparison:

Death by Leprechaun is a Cosy Mystery whereas The Book Witch is a Cosy Fantasy. Both are therefore cosy and The Book Witch also has a mystery that the characters are trying to solve, so they are similar in those ways.

What were you reading this time last year? How does it compare to what you are reading now?

Random Things Tours – Book Review – Book of Forbidden Words by Louise Fein (AD PR PRODUCT)

Genre: Historical Fiction

Number of Pages: 384

Date of Publication: 26 February 2026

Publisher: William Morrow/Harper 360 UK

Thanks so much to the Publisher/Random Things Tours for sending me this gifted copy in exchange for an honest review. This is not a paid post — all opinions are my own.

📖 PLOT SUMMARY FROM GOODREADS 📖

1552, The printing press is quickly spreading new ideas across Europe, threatening the power of church and state and unleashing a wave of book burning and heretic hunting. When frightened ex-nun Lysbette Angiers arrives at Charlotte Guillard’s famous printing shop with her manuscript, neither woman knows just how far the powerful elite will go to prevent the spread of Lysbette’s audacious ideas. 1952, NEW Milly Bennett is a lonely housewife struggling to find her way in her new neighborhood amidst the paranoid clamors of McCarthy’s America. She finds her life taking an unexpected turn when a relic from her past presents her with a 400-year-old manuscript to decipher, pulling her into a vortex of danger that threatens to shatter her world.

From the risky backstreets of sixteenth-century Paris to the unpredictable suburbs of mid-twentieth century New York, the stakes couldn’t be higher when, 400 years apart, Milly, Lysbette, and Charlotte each face a reality where the spread of ideas are feared and every effort is made to suppress them.

Dramatic and affecting, and inspired by the real-life encrypted Voynich manuscript, Book of Forbidden Words is both an engrossing story about a timeless struggle that echoes through the ages and a testament to the indomitable spirit of those who dare to let their words be heard.

💭 THOUGHTS 💭

I do enjoy an Historical Fiction featuring books, so I was pleased to be accepted onto the Blog Tour for this book. It was an excellent read and actually, in some ways, still quite relevant to today.

The writing was engaging from the beginning right through to the end. There were some emotional parts and thought provoking moments, all blended well together to make this an interesting story. There was a good mix of fact and fiction, which gave the story a more realistic feel to it. It was interesting to see where the author got her inspiration from.

The chapters were fairly long and sometimes split by the illustration of a book. This meant that you could immerse yourself more fully in each timeline before moving on. Each chapter was titled with the person, place and time that you were reading about, which was helpful as you went back and forth in time. I enjoyed reading the story from the different character perspectives.

There was a good flow between the chapters despite jumping from character to character, place to place and time to time. The different storylines worked well alongside one another and tied up well at the end.

There was a good pace to the story, with everything gradually coming together to make the story whole. There were lots of little things happening all the time in each storyline to keep it moving forward well.

The characters were excellent. I really felt for the main characters who had to make some difficult decisions. I was completely drawn into their world and felt the consequences of their final choices. They were ahead of their time and it was interesting to see how that played out. Scarily enough the main crux of the story is still relevant today. We haven’t moved on as much as we think we have and realistically we are probably moving backwards.

Lastly the settings. There were some lovely details in each of the storylines, which grounded the story well and enabled you to visualise where the characters were in their respective timelines.

Overall an enjoyable, thought provoking read. I highly recommend.
