Ok we all know what we’re here for.

I’ve been working on this clock since the March 2023 prototype went unexpectedly whaaaaa.

Nobody knows what the product looks like.

Until today.

So let’s get right to it.

Hullo!

That is a render of the actual CAD of course. Here’s a 3D printed version still warm out of its birthing pod, so you can get a sense of the scale and shape.

Let me tell you about who I’ve been working with, the thinking, and some of the design details.

Approach Studio

I am very lucky to be collaborating with London industrial design studio Approach.

(Check out their projects! Soooo gorgeous.)

I turned up at Approach with a prototype, and a deck of references and aspirations. There’s a lot to figure out — like, how weird should this be? How does it hang together as a coherent product that celebrates words?

And also MANUFACTURABILITY. There’s a lot going on.

Someday I will show you the sketches. For now, the end result.

I have loved working with Approach and their process.

To talk you through the features and decision, let’s zoom in.

Features

I can’t resist e-paper. E-ink is the old school version of this, but it has a slow refresh rate and the slow flashing is distracting. E-paper updates faster like a new Kindle and it shares the e-ink quality in that it doesn’t glow so it takes on the hue of your room.

And that’s what you want out of a clock on your shelf, right? It shouldn’t forcibly grab your attention by glowing or flashing.

• E-paper screen — the text sits on the surface

• Wi-Fi — the first time you turn on Poem/1, the screen shows a QR code: connect to the clock to set your Wi-Fi details

• USB-C power — we’ll supply a cable (but not a wall plug, people have a ton of those already)

And it is this handsome off-white shade that will just look great displayed anywhere in your home.

It’s like a little poster that tilts up to look at you

Let me say something about the proportions and the shade.

We tried dramatic colours. We tried weird and 80s throwback and in-your-face. Here’s what I learnt from those design explorations:

ONE: this is already a weird device. It’s a device that tells the time with RHYMING COUPLETS! It’s a MACHINE POET that lives on my frickin BOOKSHELVES composing tirelessly and INFINITELY. Anything apart from the poetry that yells for attention distracts from that. Hence, appliance beige :)

TWO: yet… fundamentally it’s a screen in a box, and that’s a challenge. We’re surrounded by TVs and phones and a screen, any kind of screen, unconsciously reminds us of both. Oh, this is a bigger design problem than it sounds.

See, it’s odd but when you see a screen in a box, or something slim and shaped like a smartphone, your first instinct is to either pick it up or wait for CONTENT. The blight of our age is CONTENT. A screen in a box can show anything, “CONTENT.”

But Poem/1 doesn’t show CONTENT. It tells the time with poems. Just that one thing. And if, in your monkey brain, you are expecting CONTENT then, well, you don’t read. Your eyes don’t focus quite right. You don’t see the words.

The answer:

The breakthrough came in treating this more like poster design than product design.

It’s a typographic exercise, right? If you were designing a postcard and your client said: well it has to have a bunch of words in a fixed-size green-grey box, you would be (a) super rolling your eyes at this ridiculous client brief; and, (b) you would begin layout by considering the shape of the text and the optical edges and balance and so on.

So that’s how we got to that elongated shape, and that’s my studio name Acts Not Facts debossed on the front too.

Freestanding or wall-mounted, your choice

You’ll also notice in the side view that Poem/1 is deep.

Not just deep, but the lower side of the case has a subtle wedge-shaped foot.

So the clock is freestanding, and it leans back a little to look at you when it’s on your shelf.

BUT we found when showing this around that a lot of people would like the clock on their wall. Now, this is tricky because the device is actually pretty small - perfect for shelves or a desk - but ok I can see it working on a wall… except for the power cable.

How to hang Poem/1 on a wall:

• There’s a built-in hole to hang the clock (woo built-in hole! We may end up with two of these depending on weight distribution)

• So that the cable can run up to the clock symmetrically in the middle, there’s a gully. The cable runs along the gully and then doubles back to use the side port.

We looked at hiding the cable — the idea of looping it visibly is strange, right?

But our principle for this product is honest. The idea of AI is so perplexing you know? The very concept of what it does, so alien. So the physical thing itself has to um wear itself on its sleeve, I don’t know I’ve expressed myself badly here? Physically it needs to be comprehensible, that’s what I mean. If the cable needs to loop then show the loop.

So that’s what Approach did and I love it.

The cable is ‘AI green’

Have you noticed that the canonical colour of AI is green?

Like, Poem/1 composes poetry using the same large language model behind ChatGPT. And all the ChatGPT ripoffs on the App Store are mint green or forest green.

When you use OpenAI’s developer Playground (which is I spend my time to experimenting with prompts), the AI generated text is distinguished with a green background colour.

If there’s a colour of our AI future I reckon this is it.

🏃 Other updates

• New name! The AI clock is now called Poem/1.

• I’ve changed production partner since we last spoke. Now manufacturing in China, not Mexico, with a partner that several of my hardware startup buddies also go with. I’m very happy with them. The campaign goal is now lower although the unit cost is a bit higher. But ha THAT was a busy few weeks.

• Yeah and I’m trying to record a time lapse video to show off the variety of poems…

🧗Ascending Mt. Kickstarter

It has been busy! I have made:

• A massive spreadsheet. There are tabs for development, manufacturing, fulfilment, future ops, and the campaign itself. I’m glad that’s done.

• The draft of the Kickstarter campaign page. It’s neat to see the story in one place, and unpack the design and technology. It’s also possible to see what the gaps are.

FYI — I’m not sure I should be shared this? Dunno. I’ll tell you anyway. Adding up the COGS, COS, and forward opex allocations, right now the campaign goal looks like 1,262 units or $160k (not final numbers). I’m not planning on paying myself out of this. The campaign is achievable… just. It’s punchy.

So I feel like the Kickstarter campaign has a better chance if the industrial design is more progressed from my P1 and P2 prototypes. i.e. what will the final thing look like, and let’s have a render of the CAD please.

That’s the other half of what I’ve been doing.

I am very lucky to be working with the AMAZING industrial design studio [REDACTED] on this. Here’s a tease: this morning I met them to see the second round of designs and the first 3D-printed model, and whoa.

(The quick snap at the top of this email is from the first IRL convo I had with the folks at [REDACTED], unpacking ambitions, constraints and issues, looking at references… and covering bits of paper in sketches.)

🙋 A reader question: how come I’m not charging for the AI-composed poems? Isn’t that a risk?

(Sorry I’ve lost my note of who sent in this question! If this was you, thank you!)

This is a detailed question, so let’s really dig into this.

Every time you generate a poem using OpenAI (the company behind ChatGPT), it costs money. Yes ChatGPT is free, but for commercial use it costs money. And we’re doing it every minute!

If your clock were to generate the poems itself, it would cost you several $100/year, just to run the thing. That’s no fun. And then there would be the carbon cost, multiplied up for every clock!

INSTEAD we can make it work like this:

I compose the poem once with my backend server, paying the AI cost myself, and then share it out to all clocks simultaneously.

But then, I don’t charge for sharing it out. You don’t pay anything beyond the price for the clock itself, no monthly fees.

Now (continues the question), isn’t that a problem? See, as a consumer, there’s a big risk in buying an internet-connected product: the company behind it may go out of business, and my device stops working. If the company isn’t charging for the poems, that’s not commercially sustainable, and that makes the product risky.

You’re right. So I’m dealing with that risk in two ways:

• I’ve worked out how much it’ll cost to pay for the AI and run the servers for all the clocks for 3 years. This is the "forward opex allocation” part of the budget. A % of the revenue for every single unit goes straight in a bank account, and won’t be touched except to pay server fees. We’re all paying a little in advance to share the cost between us.

• As an additional backup - for more technical folk - you’ll be able to change where the clock looks for its backend server, from the device itself, and I’ll publish the spec for the API it uses. So you’ll be able to make and run an alternative backend server for you and your friends, if you like.

Long story short, you’ll get 3 years of free service.

What happens then? Well in 3 years I imagine we’ll be on ChatGPT 9 and AI will have gone exponential, escaped the server farms and transmuted the Moon into pure thinking computronium, specks of which will end up ambiently floating in the atmosphere before we inhale them and they burrow deep into our cerebellum, setting up symbiotic cognition such that GPT knows our thoughts just as we know its — at which point we’ll all have direct consciousness of the time, and physical clocks - sluggish matter, crude matter - will be moot for such luminous dual-beings as we, thank you very much.

That’s my guess.

💃 The story so far…

In a nutshell: I hacked together a quick prototype, a tweet went crazy, AI Clock got in the New York Times, uh oh better make this thing. But what to do? Kits? Boxed product? Who can even make it? So we’ve been figuring out all of that.

🏭 Milestone! We’ve planned out manufacture!

The pic above is very first public photo of P2, the second prototype of AI Clock.

It has a gorgeous e-paper screen, it’s super easy to connect to wi-fi, and it gets all the poems from a new backend server (so you won’t have to pay a monthly fee to run the thing).

What’s more, this is manufacturable.

I’ve been working with a couple of amazing production partners in the US and Mexico – more about them in a future update.

We’ve optimised for low risk: it’s a fairly straightforward manufacturing process, and the clocks will be easy to certify FCC/CE (certification can otherwise be a lengthy process).

So we’ve got our bill of materials; we’ve figured out timings, and freight cost, and minimum order quantities, and all that stuff. PLAN MADE.

💃 Next stop: Kickstarter

Let’s do a Kickstarter campaign!

This is a bit old-school Kickstarter I know. I’m not a company. I’m just a guy with a clock that needs to reach a minimum initial order with a factory. If enough people commit then I can hit the button.

I’ve been talking to some crowdfunding-savvy buddies. Here’s their advice:

1. Make a prototype that can go to production. Done!

2. Make a budget. Okay, done that.

3. No, like a really REALLY detailed budget. Huh ok some work to do.

4. Make a pre-launch landing page on Kickstarter. Right I’ll do that after the budget.

5. Get lots of people on a mailing list so you’ve got people to tell when the pre-launch page goes live.

6. There’s more down the road but we’ll get to that.

On (4): well here we are! There are 1,296 subscribers on this Substack. I would love more! Please tell your friends!

🧑‍🎓 What happens next

What I will do:

• I am going to prep the Kickstarter campaign, and tell you about that process here

💃 No news is good news?

I really want to get the hardware AI Clock in your hands!

Like I said before, we’re chasing down two routes, and will go with whichever makes most sense. An update on both…

1. Kits. Progress! We’ve developed new embedded software for the clock that makes it super easy to set up on wifi. BUT there’s no readily available hardware that suits. Booooo. (I’d like to have a kit without soldering, and the available “assembled” off-the-shelf hardware takes 40 seconds to refresh the screen… not great for a clock.) Still chasing this one down, there must be something straightforward.

2. Boxed product is tantalising. I’ve been talking to production partners and retail partners and let’s just all keep our fingers crossed right?? We are diving for answers deep in the Shenzhen supply chain, and we had to do that firmware development (above) to get the questions right. I’m not going to say anything out loud yet because I don’t want to jinx it. Watch this space.

Another piece of the puzzle is the cloud service. I mentioned the cost of AI last time: generating 1,440 poems per day (one every minute) costs about $1.80/day 😬

So there’s now a cloud service that composes the poems and syndicates them out. That will mean the AI cost will be $0/day for everyone who buys the Future Clock! It's here at Poem. We’re on V2 now! It works well!

And don’t worry the poems still have that mysteriously positive vibe.

As part of doing this project I’ve got kinda obsessed with novel clocks.

Here are two of my faves…

REAL TIME by Maarten Baas uses video projection to look like there’s a person inside continuously erasing and re-drawing the hands. There’s an installation by Paddington station in London, go check it out if you can.

PONGSAVER is a Mac screensaver by Mike Ash that looks like the old video game Pong… only it’s continuously in action, each player controlled by AI, and the score at the top is the current time. When the time has to change, the AI is made artificially stupid so it lets in a goal on the appropriate side 🥲

🧐 The plan

For the hardware, we’re pursuing two parallel tracks:

• Kits. For hackers, we’re putting together the parts list, instructions, and code for building your own AI Clock. This will be the quickest to get into your hands and will require some technical know-how. Maybe it will be a tutorial online, maybe a kit you can buy. Watch this space.

• Boxed product. A fully-assembled AI Clock, ready to plug and play. This will be the easiest to use, and prettiest, but will take longer to design, manufacture and ship. This is hard to do! (I’ve done connected hardware before.) So we’ll see. Current status: researching.

A challenge of the clock is that AI is costly. This prototype version would cost $1.80/day to run – for every clock! Not ok! So instead the kits and consumer product will use a shared cloud service, which will be free as it shares the cost between everyone, with an option to personalise the poems for a fee.

How you can help: There’s a lot involved in building connected gadgets, whether kits or boxed products. I’m looking for a partner who can handle (and float) manufacturing, international distribution, and retail relationships. Industrial design, DFM, certification and packaging would be a bonus.

🛠️ Developer APIs

The shared cloud service is available to developers as a simple REST API. It lives over at Poem – a new service.

Which means that if you’re a developer and want to build your own physical clock, screen saver, iPhone widget, projected window display or whatever, today, the API is here for you. Get in touch for early access.
