The market's bestselling and most comprehensive reference on chart patterns, backed by statistics and decades of experience

When the smart money trades the securities markets, they leave behind financial footprints. Combine enough footprints together and you have a trail to follow. That trail becomes what’s called a chart pattern. Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns, Third Edition expands upon Bulkowski's immensely popular Second Edition with fully revised and updated material on chart patterns. Whether you’re new to the stock market or an experienced professional trader, use this book as a reference guide to give you an edge.

Within the pages of this book, you’ll learn how to identify chart patterns, supported by easy-to-understand performance statistics describing how well a pattern works, what the failure rate is, and what special quirks suggest better future performance. You’ll discover how often a stop loss order will trigger at various locations within a chart pattern, how the chart pattern’s performance has evolved over the past three decades, and how to profit from failure by trading busted patterns.

This broadened and revised Third Edition offers investors the most comprehensive, up-to-date guide to this popular method of market analysis. Written by a leading expert on chart patterns, Tom Bulkowski, this edition includes revised statistics on 75 chart patterns including 23 new ones, with pictures and performance statistics, packaged within easy-to-read text.

  • Gain essential knowledge of chart patterns and how they are used to predict price movements in bull and bear markets
  • New tables include how often stops are hit, busted pattern performance, performance over the decades, and special pattern features
  • Joining Tour, Identification Guidelines, Focus on Failures, Statistics, Trading Tactics and Sample Trade is Experience. It puts you in the passenger’s seat so you can share lessons learned from Bulkowski's trades
  • This edition reports on statistics from nearly four times the number of samples used in the Second Edition and ten times the number in the First Edition

The Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns, Third Edition further solidifies the reputation of this book as the leading reference on chart patterns, setting it far above the competition.

If you are intermediate to advanced and want to expand you base this is definitely a book to add to the collection. The content is heavy so a new technician may find it intense to carryon. This is definitely a reference book to help identify potential. If you want a thorough understanding with statical verification this is a must have.

I bought this book because I don't like relying on indicators. Indicators are lagging and I want to read price action in real time. After a few months of using this book as a reference, it has definitely upped my game and I'm having more winning trades when day trading 0DTE options for high volume stocks and ETFs.

5.0 out of 5 stars An updated classic reference book for professional traders
Reviewed in Australia on June 14, 2021
    Format: eTextbookVerified Purchase
For many years, this large volume reference book has been a gold standard for chart pattern analyses. As I am studying and preparing for the qualifying examination by the Certified Market Technician (CMT) association, I discovered that the official syllabus also makes frequent references to this book - a sign that this book is held in very high regard by the technical analysts community.

This book has a long history. For over 20 years, the author has collected and expanded his data base to support the writing of this book. Therefore, this updated third edition has incorporated a significant amount of new data. The result is a monumental piece of research work, with over two decades of data analyses curated by a single author. The scope and the depth of the author's work is extensive, unparalleled by any other books in the technical analysis literature.

The book is better suited for serious professional traders. If you are a beginner trader who like learning to trade by watching YouTube or reading posts in social media, this book is NOT for you. The book content is huge, making reading the entire book not an easy task (you are likely to invest weeks to months of your time to complete reading the book) To the author's credit, he has tried his best to make it easier for you, by using engaging and entertaining writing (he provides numerous trading examples in the book; also including some occasional light-hearted jokes to break the monotony among numerous tables and figures).

Overall, this book is a must-have for the reference library of technical analysts. The high price tag is relative - one will consider it a bargain given its high-value information. In fact, the author claims "my books always sell", which is not surprisingly given the book's unmatched quality and its superior content. Therefore, I do not think the high price tag will deter its intended audience (e.g. serious traders and professional analysts).

Like any single-authored book, some may argue that it has the expected limitation of personal bias (since it is written by only one person). In some ways, it is a strength than a disadvantage since the methodology used by the author is kept consistent across the three editions of this book (this is difficult to achieve in a multi-authored book).

This new edition will no doubt consolidate its reputation as a classic text in the technical analyst community.

Best comprehensive book on charting available out there. Every chart pattern is identified and carefully explain in detail by the author. Author has given it a refreshed look and updated its content. It sits proudly next to my trading screens for quick referencing. The book, however, does not contain indicators which is a shame but nevertheless, its worth every cent.
