A Patterns Approach to Designing Distributed Systems and Solving Common Implementation Problems
More and more enterprises today are dependent on cloud services from providers like AWS, Microsoft Azure, and GCP. They also use products, such as Kafka and Kubernetes, or databases, such as YugabyteDB, Cassandra, MongoDB, and Neo4j, that are distributed by nature. Because these distributed systems are inherently stateful systems, enterprise architects and developers need to be prepared for all the things that can and will go wrong when data is stored on multiple servers--from process crashes to network delays and unsynchronized clocks.
Patterns of Distributed Systems describes a set of patterns that have been observed in mainstream open-source distributed systems. Studying the common problems and the solutions that are embodied by the patterns in this guide will give you a better understanding of how these systems work, as well as a solid foundation in distributed system design principles.
Featuring real-world code examples from systems like Kafka and Kubernetes, these patterns and solutions will prepare you to confidently traverse open-source codebases and understand implementations you encounter "in the wild."
- Review the building blocks of consensus algorithms, like Paxos and Raft, for ensuring replica consistency in distributed systems
- Understand the use of logical timestamps in databases, a fundamental concept for data versioning
- Explore commonly used partitioning schemes, with an in-depth look at intricacies of two-phase-commit protocol
- Analyze mechanisms used in implementing cluster coordination tasks, such as group membership, failure detection, and enabling robust cluster coordination
- Learn techniques for establishing effective network communication between cluster nodes.
Along with enterprise architects and data architects, software developers working with cloud services such as Amazon S3, Amazon EKS, and Azure CosmosDB or GCP Cloud Spanner will find this set of patterns to be indispensable.

Kundrecensioner

Formatera: PocketbokVerifierat köpPatterns of Distributed Systems, by Unmesh Joshi (full disclosure - a former colleague of mine from 20 years ago), is a rare technical book which is both readable and useful. I love how it starts out with a section that explains the why of distributed systems before it dives into a very well organized structure grouping different types of distributed systems into their primary motivations. The whole book is organized into a number of key parts:
- Narratives - realistic stories motivating the design of distributed systems in the first place
- Patterns of Data Replication - ways to reliably copy and move date across nodes
- Patterns of Data Partitioning - how to split data for performance
- Patterns of Distributed Time - dealing with the devil of inconsistent clocks on different nodes
- Patterns of Cluster Management - getting all the nodes to work as a single system
- Patterns of Communication between Nodes - basic node-to-node communication
I honestly feel like every chapter in the book could have helped me at least once during my last 20+ years in enterprise software product management, and this could be the textbook for one of the most practical software engineering courses at any university.

Formatera: PocketbokVerifierat köp"Overview of the patterns" chapter is good and the reference to the patterns is not bad either. But the code examples (which make like 60-70% of the book) are very annoying! I am OK with the mistakes here and there. What makes me frustrated is switching the abstraction level back and forth from highly detailed code example to barely desribing an important step of a concept. I would often find myself seeking through a boilerplate of an example just to run into a function that is implemented 2 pages from here or not implemented at all. I would really appreciate just to have ALL of the code at once in front of me. A link to a github would be a life saver. But i could not find it anywhere.
with completely ignoring some of the with but give me the acccess to the whole codebase then if

VinooGranskad i Indien den 9 april 20243,0 av 5 stjärnor Book is good but is it a fake ?
Formatera: PocketbokVerifierat köpThe content of the book should be good as its a Martin Fowler's Series and historically the content in these series has been good. The only problem is the paper quality which gives an impression that its fake. More over the printing at the back side looks a little blurred and the paper color is grayish as compared to ivory white ( in case of an imported book ) , the images are grey scale
