"You always act like a gangster. But a gangster like you always butts into people's business and helps them." - Pran to Pat[1]
Pat (full name Napat Jindapat) is one of the main characters of Bad Buddy, the president of the Engineering faculty at South Tech University, and Pran's love interest. He is portrayed by Ohm Pawat.
His name in Pran's phone is แค่เพื่อน (kha puen), which means "just a friend," and more notably is the first half of the show's title in Thai.[2] Pran sets this nickname in Episode 1; his nickname in Pat's phone is the second half of the show's title in Thai[3], although it is unknown when Pat sets this nickname.
He lives in Apartment 444 in Tinidee during his first two years of university. In Our Skyy 2, which takes place in their third year, he and Pran have their own apartment together.
Appearance
Pat has black hair and dark brown eyes. Pran often remarks that Pat's eyes are "fierce-looking." Pat is 6'1". His wardrobe is rather colorful, and he most often wears tropical shirts and muscle tees when not at school, with occasional colorful t-shirts. Like other Engineering students, he has a navy blue Engineering faculty uniform, which he often wears with another shirt underneath. Many of his shirts tend to have English lettering with American or other western references, varying from advertising Tim Hortons and Lucky Charms to merely having the words "Baseball Mom" on them. He is seen wearing shorts, jean shorts, jeans, or black or white trousers. He usually wears black converse, and occasionally flip-flops.
As a child, Pat had a bowl cut. During high school, Pat mostly had straight bangs, though it appears middle-parted in a few scenes. Similarly, in university Pat usually has his hair middle or side parted, but in a few scenes he has straight bangs[4]. After he graduates, he usually wears his hair slicked back.
Pat is confident in his body and unashamed in it, shown by how frequently he takes off his shirt in the show, particularly for Pran's appeal. He is muscular and athletic, and works out regularly. Though Pran is seen to favor more lightness and speed during rugby, Pat can run just as fast and is able to catch up with Pran.
He seems to have an affinity for the black and white color combination, as seen in his bag and his apartment in episode 12.
By Episode 12, he is shown to wear a metallic gold-framed leather watch.
Due to Pa's use of the word "hia" for him, it is likely that Pat's family is Thai-Chinese.
Personality, Hobbies, & Talents
Pat is impulsive, practical, and commanding, at least around his peers. In Episode 1, a food truck vendor refers to him as "someone so icy," and Safe says that Pat is the "boss of his faculty... even [their] seniors don't want to mess with him." However, many of Pat's fronts and ambitions were pressured onto him by Ming, who wanted Pat to follow in his footsteps as a top-class Engineering student and as a rugby player. Ming had also pressured Pat into competing with Pran during their childhood by any means necessary. Due in part to this, Pat is intelligent, athletically talented, charismatic, proactive, confident, musically gifted, and a capable leader. Additionally, he is more often than not the most responsible member of his friend group.
Pat has dated a few girls in the past—Nan, a cheerleader from 8th grade, who tricked him into buying her items in online games; and an unnamed girl who Pat bought a surf skate for before she promptly dumped him.[5] He also offers to pay for his friends' food twice[6], and pays for Pran's food without asking even before they start dating[7]. Korn also jokes about him being a "sugar daddy," and Pat quite literally jokes about being Pran's sugar daddy in Episode 7. Despite this, it is not shown that he or his family is much richer than Pran's, especially as he is happy to share his dorm with his sister in his sophomore year of university. It is possible that Ming is more generous with his allowance to Pat, especially since Pat mentions that his father was planning on buying him an electric drum kit in Episode 4.
With Pran, Pat is incredibly silly and immature, often using verbal and physical antics to intentionally get on Pran's nerves. He is shameless both with his affection and his bullying of Pran, whether it's shoving Pran's head under his t-shirt or clinging while Pran does the dishes. He also enjoys trying to get Pran to smile (of which he is quite successful), as he has a special fondness for Pran's dimples. Pat likes to bring out Pran's competitive streak as well, even when they're dating. Being competitive by nature, Pat frequently exhibits confident, arrogant, and stubborn behavior, though in university and with Pran, often underlies his competitiveness with a goofy charm. Pran describes him as a "dog" on several occasions, particularly when Pat is clingy or waxes poetic about Pran's scent. Pat loves being affectionate and initially wishes to show off his relationship with Pran despite them dating in secret. He does this by taking subtle pictures of things that remind him of Pran and posting them on his Instagram.
Pat never hesitates to stand up for what he believes in, using whatever means necessary, as shown in Episode 9 when he defended Wai at the bar, even though Wai had been rude to him repeatedly during the day. He is also unafraid of any sort of violence, as when the gun appears he attempts to wrestle it out of its owner's hands. In Episode 1, he had initially picked the fight with Wai because Wai had flipped him off over a football game, also showing that he has a short fuse when it comes to rudeness; during Wai's confrontation with the Engineering gang, Korn says that when Pat "gets mad he just can't control it," though it is unknown whether this is true or Korn just says it to make Wai fear him more. Pran confesses in Episode 11 that he likes Pat because he "always acts like a gangster... but a gangster like you always butts into people's business and helps them."
In the original Bad Buddy trailer, Pat is described to be "the crappy one." He is good at math, being an engineer and also in the original trailer offering to help Pran with his Physics homework, while Pran helps him with his English homework. Many decorations in his dorm and later apartment have math-related graphs and equations on them.
Pat plays the drums and Thai xylophone, is good at rugby and soccer, and is a decent enough actor for the Architecture play to replace Chart as one of the main leads. He is also shown to enjoy reading, gaming, and chess, by the set decorations in his bedroom and dorm room.
He sleeps with an "old" doll named Nong Nao. His LINE ID is patlnwza55+, of which "lnwza" is a common username tag from 2010 Thai gamers, due to looking like เทพซ่า (god), and "55" meaning "haha" or "lol."[8] He has an iPhone with a grey and light blue phone case.
His handwriting is notably sloppy.
Relationships
Pran (see also Pat/Pran)- Pat has known Pran since they were born, constantly competing with him for most of their childhood. Initially, Pat is encouraged by his father to beat Pran at everything they could possibly beat each other at, such as academics, sports, and their social life; despite Pat's natural affinity for them, Pran constantly proves himself a worthy opponent for Pat at every angle. Pat is not friendly toward Pran before the lake incident with Pa; when Pran encounters Pat and his sister alone, Pat is the one who tells Pran to go away.
However, after Pran saves his sister from the lake when Pat was frozen in shock, Pat's attitude toward Pran starts to change. Even though when he breaks into Pran's room that night to return the watch and tells Pran to not talk to him when people are around because he does not want people to mistake them as friends, Pat warms up to him anyway, talking to Pran in secret in tin can phones across their rooms. He and Pran both join the music club in high school, and though Pat has a crush on Ink, he enjoys spending time with Pran as well, cutting out his student ID when Pran leaves his guitar pick at home, and saying hi to Pran in the school hallways. When Pran's parents discover that they are in the music club together and transfer Pran out, Pat is visibly bewildered, and later says that the three years without Pran was "depressing and lonely."
After he and Pran reunite in university, Pat is quick to drop any unfriendly pretenses with Pran, especially as Pran has his own guard up. Pat starts to be more annoying to Pran in order to get a reaction out of him, and notices that Pran enjoys it. On one multiple occasion, he lies to Pran about leaving his house key at home and asks Pran if he can sleep over as an excuse to spend more time with him. Pat soon realizes his own feelings for Pran and behaves oddly with him during an encounter at a music shop, and later when he tries to test his own jealousy after advice from Korn. Pat discovers that though he does not get jealous of seeing girls with Pran, he is jealous when he sees or hears about Wai with Pran. This is particularly magnified when it comes to Pran playing Just Friend? with Wai, when Pat considered it to be their song.
Pat confesses his feelings to Pran almost as soon as he realizes that the feelings may be mutual, not long after he recognizes his own feelings. Despite Pran's constant attempts to rebuff him, saying that their relationship could never happen, Pat continues to pursue him, eventually offering a solution to Pran's wariness: they can have a competitive bet to try to get the other to confess first, and whoever confesses their feelings first loses. Pat flirts with Pran by offering to feed him seaweed, showing off a picture of himself in his new car and offering Pran as his "sugar baby" to drive him as his "sugar daddy," AirDropping an edited photo of Pran drawn to emphasize his dimples in front of their shared lecture, and repairing Pran's printer when Pran asks him to. He also makes Pran come to his dorm to return Nong Nao, who he had left at Pran's dorm the day before. Half of the time he is able to fluster Pran; the other half of the time, Pran manages to fluster him back.
Pran also know that Pat gets jealous easily of his friendship with Wai, and weaponizes it against Pat during this time period.
When Pat discovers that Pran had given Wai his guitar to hold onto between a little before the Architecture beach camp to sometime early in their sophomore year, he is visibly upset. It is implied that he is upset because Pat had held onto Pran's guitar for three years earlier, and had returned it to Pran the year previous. Though he and Pran do not talk about it on-screen, he is cold with Pran after this.
When Pran initially asks Pat to take Chart's place in the play, Pat tells Pran he only will if Pran confesses to him on screen in front of their entire shared lecture, which Pran refuses. However, when Pran and the other architecture students are stressing at the next rehearsal, Pat appears at the turntable, playing the xylophone and revealing to the Architecture students that he is willing to play Riam, to everyone's relief. It is then revealed that Pat's audition during the play was a love confession, where he forced Pran to be in Kwan's role and spoke directly to him, professing his love. Pat tells Pran that that was his true confession to Pran as well, and that he always lets his lover win in anything. This is quickly brought into question when Pa knocks at their dorm door, and Pat tries to make Pran answer it instead.
During the beginning stages of their relationship, Pat is very excited about their relationship, posting hints of it on his Instagram with the caption #JustFriend, even though he and Pran had agreed to keep it secret. This causes Pran to be annoyed with him, resulting them in fighting, and then quickly communicating and attempting to compromise with each other. Despite the compromise, their relationship gets revealed. Because of their ability to communicate, they maintain a strong front against their faculty and friends' reactions until they get over it, and again when their parents discover the true nature of their relationship. Pat and Pran get into their own antics when discovering the truth behind their parents' feud, and cry on each other's shoulders in their desperate times of need.
When Pat and Pran run away to the Eco Village, he is the first one to pretend to throw his SIM card in the ocean, before revealing to Pran he had faked it because he'd paid good money for an auspicious number; Pran also reveals that he had not thrown away his SIM card either. Pat attempts to persuade Pran that they can start a new life here if they work at Uncle Yod's bar; Pran initially questions him, resulting in a brief fight, before deciding to go with it, telling Pat, "I can be anywhere as long as I have you." Still, Pat realizes that the Eco Village is not their reality, and he and Pran say goodbye to Uncle Tong and Junior. In a later montage, it is seen that Pat and Pran return to the Eco Village to visit Uncle Tong and Junior again.
He and Pran lie to their parents and the majority of their friends that they had broken up. However, they maintain their relationship in secret, with only Ink, Pa, Wai, and Korn knowing, in order to cover for them. Four years later, it is shown that they are still together and still attempting (or pretending to attempt) to maintain the ruse, even though their parents had already figured it out. They even pretend not to know each other at their high school reunion due to the ruse. Though Pran is living in Singapore for his internship during this time, he and Pat have visited each other; Pat is reluctant to let Pran go back even though he knows he needs to.
Pat tells Pran that because Pran is going back to Singapore after two weeks that Korn is going to give out his wedding invitations before them, to which Korn replies that he and his girlfriend are only engaged as his girlfriend is focusing on her master's degree. This implies that Pat and Pran may also be engaged at this point.
Pa - Pa is Pat's sister by one year, and his confidante throughout the series. They have typical brother-sister banter; she is also the first and only person for a long time to know that Pat and Pran are next-door dorm neighbors. After graduating high school, Pa also attends South Tech University and lives with Pat, who shares his dorm with her.
When Pat thinks he has a crush on Ink, Pa attempts to help him by telling him the "four signs of liking someone." Though Pat does not confide in her about his feelings for Pran, she and Ink are the first to be shown acting friendly toward them after their relationship had unwillingly become public, during homemade hotpot. When Pran tells Pat to lay off on the physical affection because Pa is around, Pat asks him, "So?" before going to kiss Pran again, leaving Pa to complain.
Pa asks Pat what he thinks of her anonymous mentor gifts, and later asks for romantic advice, though to no avail. She eventually confides in Pat about her feelings for Ink, possibly because she knew that Pat had a crush on her as well. Pat says that he does not mind it as he and Ink had never dated, only that his pride is hurt because "the brother couldn't make it, but the sister can."
When Wai accepts Pat and Pran's relationship, he asks Pat permission to pursue his sister as he has a crush on her. Pat says that he does not care because his sister's relationships are not his own, though he does warn Wai that he may want to act quickly, as he'd heard that his sister has been texting "someone" recently.
Pa is one of the few to know about Pat and Pran's relationship after Episode 11. She continues living in Pat's initial dorm, though Pat moves out with Pran in their third year. Pat later helps her and Ink move out when Pa graduates.
Ink - his lesbian bff
Korn - his transmasc bff
Ming Jindapat - Pat looks up to and respects his father up until Episode 10, when he finds out the truth about Ming's history with Dissaya. Prior to this, Pat's main ambition is to keep his father proud and happy, regardless of his relationship with Pran. Pat and Ming are shown to be close in Episode 2 when Ming speaks informally to him ("meung," the way Pat and Pran often greet each other), gives him nepotistic advice due to having been classmates with Professor Pichai, and offers friendly banter with his son in teasing him about having girls over and "using protection." In Episode 6, when Pat goes to look for Pran at his family's house and is stopped by Dissaya, Ming is quick to come to his son's defense and scolds Dissaya for being unnecessarily rude to him. However, the need for his father's approval puts an unhealthy amount of stress on Pat, as when he talks about doing things other than rugby in sophomore year, Ming insists that he keep playing rugby, and Pat follows his father's wishes for the most part. When Ming discovers that Pat has been skipping rugby practices in favor of the Architecture play, he confronts Pat about it and expresses how disappointed he is in Pat, that he usually "doesn't intervene" in Pat's life because he thought Pat knew his priorities. However, by the end of Episode 10 it is implied that Pat's trust in his father is irreparably broken, as in Episode 12 Pat states that he doesn't visit home often and though he works for his father's company, they often do not work together because it usually ends in a conflict. Despite this, he is polite and respectful to his father over dinner, and attempts to make conversation with him at multiple points.
