Titling this piece "Gassing on the Beach", I'm about to dive into the world of furry art criticism, for these problematic elements of this particular piece must be dissected immediately.
Let's start with the obvious. "Gassing on the Beach"? Really? That's the most creative you could come up with? It reeks of laziness, of two characters so uninspired, they resort to the safest, most fetishized trope in the furry fandom without adding anything new to it.
Animals on the beach resorting to flatulence? How original. They'll be imagining anthropomorphic dicks hitting snare drums before you know it.
With her purple prose rolling off the screen like a sloppy landslide, Angela the Stunky's enthusiasm irritates me and makes my eyebrows twitch. "Aaaaah... this is wonderful! Thanks for bringing me here, Sal. Great weather, easy to catch sleeping prey, and... FFFRRRRT! Plenty of room to just lay back, digest, and let loose!*" She sounds more like an exuberant eleven-year-old at a Chuck E. Cheese birthday party than a sophisticated woodland creature. The excessive use of emphasis marks and colloquialisms only heightens the juvenile tone.
Now let's consider the artwork before we continue: the actual illustration is uninspired, relying on tired, overused furry visual clichés. A stiff, generic sableye and skunk duo enjoying the sun, with their skink depicted in an uneven, disorganized swatch of blues and greens. No effort is made to create a realistic or even stylized beach environment. The main event, Angela's pert posterior rising heavenward as she gives her massive belly a hefty squish, is set against a bland, featureless expanse of sand that you could find literally anywhere.
And then, to top it all off, Sal's response. "G-glad you're having a great time, Angela." Clumsily punctuated, cringe-worthily awkward delivery aside, what is the point of even having a supporting character if they're going to contribute so little to the story? It's like Angela forgot she was meant to interact with her fellow furry friend Sal and not simply have him exist as a prop for her flatulence-filled monologue.
The toilet humor is not only gross and overused, but it's a black hole so devoid of wit that any attempt at levity becomes an unintentional study in anti-comedy. It is based entirely on how profoundly it's insulting towards FA users' cognitive and comedic faculties. I at least understand how quickly I graduated to more complex kinks and/or forms of toilet humor and eproctophilia.
This art does nothing to engage the site's userbase, as its humor does not come from clear writing or character depth. It misunderstands gross-out humor, it misunderstands the fart fetish, it even fails to use them with creative content. All it does is resort to this one joke centered around flatulence, lacking setup or a context. The art piece serves only to showcase flatulence without any deeper narrative, illustrating Angela and Sal's absence of cleverness or timing when it comes to humor.
This art disrespects the community that it was intended to appeal to is disrespected, because most of them probably value intricate storylines, well-developed characters and enhanced visuals. For a single childish joke, Angela is reduced to a mere object, implying that she believes the audience lacks the intelligence to appreciate more sophisticated humor or add sophistication to what would typically be considered off-color humor. The potential richness of character-driven narratives is undermined by this treatment.
This is the reason I wrote "Rarity and Fluttershy Spend Time Together", a tale in which Fluttershy discovers that Rarity's unexpected pressure is an invitation. As their bond grows, playful interactions and subtle touches heighten their feelings. While having fun with Rarity, Fluttershy manages her flatulence and their encounter signals the beginning of a significant journey full of love and acceptance. The story is funny because Fluttershy's gas is both bizarre and effective at the same time, and instead of descending into cheap, jarring comedy or fetish fodder, it functions as a powerful narrative device for exploration and character development.
In contrast, "Gassing on the Beach" is a complete failure. It fails as fetish artwork, and the non-fetish elements fail as well. The writing is amateurish, the art is unimpressive and the premise is lazy and unoriginal.
It's a prime example of why the furry fandom often gets such a bad rap. This kind of content damages the reputation of a once vibrant and creative community based on how uninspired and juvenile it is. One can only hope that in the future writers and artists will strive for more than just the cheap thrill of fart jokes and simplistic, fetishized depictions of anthropomorphic animals engaging in base, animalistic behavior.
