  1. Proper implementation of unicode support in merge 

    Improve tests
Add new common.py file with utility functions:
 - Python 2/3 (hopefully) compatible unicode conversion code
 - common get_subpath utility function
 - moved try_encode to this file
Bump up version number
Put my name in README.rst instead of git handle
Update .gitignore with some files that should be ignored
