Thanks again for your great work!

What's coming in 2026?

A Conference Talk

On January 31st, I (Peter) will be presenting at FOSDEM once again after 2024: "Linux Phone App Ecosystem (2026)". Aside from the talk, I am going to spend the first half of Saturday and most of Sunday at the Linux on Mobile stand (building UD level 1). Come by and say hi!

Retirement

Believe it or not, 2026 will be the year I (Peter) am going to retire from maintainng LinuxPhoneApps.org. This is not going to happen immediately, but I don't expect to be running any more checker-based updates or do blog posts like this one from June 2026 onwards.

The reason is simple: There's another responsibilty that's going need my attention: A tiny, new human being. This means I have to prioritize my #LinuxMobile activities, and while this project is near and dear to my heart, it has also been a massive time-sink never really becoming what I would like it to be, and continuing the Weekly Updates over at LINMOB.net beyond that date feels just more important.

What does this mean for LinuxPhoneApps.org?

No matter what happens, it's going to stay online, it will just go stale. If someone steps up, it may have a future. If you, dear reader, are interested in continuing it, please get in touch - or just fork it, as long as you respect the license, that's perfectly fine, too. In fact, I'd recommend some re-architecting - if I were to restart the site now, there are some things I'd do differently (e.g., storing data in AppStream Metadata XML with custom extensions).

What is the focus for the remaining months?

While it was a focus before to follow Flathub's Mobile Collection (today we're at a count of 43 apps we are lacking (vs. 33 on November 16th, and 31 on October 5th) no listed), the new focus is upstreaming. That said, you may use services or have devices we do not - any help evaluating those apps we don't have is highly appreciated!

What do I mean with upstreaming? Two things, really.

One is making sure that Flathub Mobile Collection does not list apps that don't work on mobile, because their UI is to wide or is not touchscreen compatible. Doing so involves talking to these projects about appstream metadata and working towards fixing metadata, or better making the app actually ready for mobile.

The other is making sure that apps listed on Flathub that work well on Mobile become part of the Mobile Collection. This involves contributing to the apps appstream metadata and trying to make sure app maintainers know how what matters and how to test for that with regards to mobile compatibility for further developement.

In all cases, being friendly and supportive when engaging with upstream is really important - these developers don't owe me/us nothing, after all.

I want to help, where to get started?

If you read this last time, you can skip it, it's the same copy! ;-)

We do have a public issue tracker, that lists things that we aim to improve. All relevant parts of LinuxPhoneApps live in one repository - the repo's README is hopefully helpful. Feel free to ask away in our Matrix room if you have questions!

Fixing existing app or game listings is just one click away (provided you have a framagit.org account) - every listing has an edit link at the bottom of the page.

So if you see that something is wrong, please take the time and help fix it - by fixing it, or by reporting it to the issue tracker or via e-mail.

Adding apps

If you want to help by adding an app:

LPA helper is still not properly integrated, but it works. As it turns out, not all of the apps in the collection live up to the promises made in their Metadata. As it's a goal to improve this, writing kind issues upstream or, contributing patches, adds to our broader to do-list. [...] If you want to follow our progress (or chime in), this is the issue to watch.

Similar to the last time, progress on this has been slow, as of today, November 16th, 2025, we're at a count of 33 apps in Flathub's Mobile Collection (vs. 31 on October 5th) not listed on LinuxPhoneApps.org. Please make sure to read the relevant ticket, you may use services or have devices we do not and thus can make a serious difference in chiming in!

There's the idea to just add these apps - but some just can't be easily evaluated and will be added to the "needs testing" segment. Adding more than ten apps to that part of the site is problematic, as long as these apps show up in the app count - I don't want to inflate the app count artificially.

I want to help, where to get started?

If you read this last time, you can skip it, it's the same copy! ;-)

We do have a public issue tracker, that lists things that we aim to improve. At least I managed to update many listings in late July, so currently, the maintenance status is mostly ok.

If you want to help with maintenance, please note that aside from our checkers, lpa_helper can also edit an existing listing, if you don't want to edit TOML + Markdown by hand like an animal.

Thanks

Again, thanks go out to Max and for taking over the maintainership of the games list/the games listed! Thanks again for your great work!

Also, I want to thank darkdragon-001 for improving our checkers once more - thank you for continued contributions!

What's in the works?

Content

More regular update posts

Doing a quarterly blog post is a weird thing: There's always a lot I don't remember and only re-discover by going through the
git log
.

Therefore, I want to increase the frequence of these posts by making them monthly or, if that does not work out, bi-quarterly.

All The Mobile Apps

To just quote from the last post:

Obviously, it's a goal to monitor Flathub's Mobile Collection, and list most of its apps after evaluation. As it turns out, not all of the apps in the collection live up to the promises made in their Metadata. As it's a goal to improve this, writing kind issues upstream or, contributing patches, adds to our broader to do-list. [...] If you want to follow our progress (or chime in), this is the issue to watch.

Similar to the last time, progress on this has been slow, as of today, October 5th, 2025, we're at a count of 31 apps in Flathub's Mobile Collection (vs. 38 on July 31st) not listed on LinuxPhoneApps.org.

A second issue tracker?

What I call the "evaluation backlog" has been an issue from day one of contributing to this list. Just because you stumble on something interesting, this does not mean you can immediately try it. With premature projects, you'll usually have to compile from source, with, with an unfamiliar or undocumented build process can be quite the timesink (especially for Electron and Flutter apps, but not just for these).

As a consequence of that, we had this list essentially forever - but, it's hard to manage. You need to remember that you have the app there when you finally get around to adding it, and nobody can somewhat easily comment on things.

While this could be easily added in "one issue per app" way to our main issue tracker, it would really pollute the thing ... I have to juggle a project with thousands of issues in JIRA at work, and finding the needles in the haystack is not what I look forward to in my spare time.

One idea would be to add an apps project, that's basically issue tracker only. To ease contributions, maybe mirroring this to, e.g., codeberg would be a fun thing to do - assuming two-way-mirroring is easy enough to set up.

So if you've got ideas, get in touch on the fediverse or join our Matrix chat and share your idea.

UI

A good idea for a different UI was introduced by alf: alf: "@linuxphoneapps My "engine" is…" - FLOSS.social

Like last quarter, I hope to at least find the time for experimentation with this in this quarter. Aside from the apps we know to be manual maintenance, it turns out, that maintenance has not become easier lately: Checking links, or updating our listings with the contents of upstream AppStream metadata, has not gotten easier as code hosting platforms are forced to add defense mechanisms to fight back abusive AI scrapers.

If you want to help with maintenance, please note that lpa_helper, while still not meaningfully integrated into the site (see more on that below) has been refactored: If you want to edit an existing listing, you can now rely on it and import the current markdown source file into it. We hope this change makes contributing more accessible.

Aside from apps and games, the docs section saw some love, including a new page on building flatpaks.

This past quarter also again saw a little work with upstream - here is my favorite example.

Thanks

Again, thanks go out to Max and for taking over the maintainership of the games list/the games listed! Thanks again for your great work!

FOSDEM

Peter also attended FOSDEM - it was blast. If you are reading this post because you grabbed a sticker at the Linux on Mobile stand, welcome!

What's in the works?

Content

All The Mobile Apps

Obviously, it's a goal to monitor Flathub's Mobile Collection, and list most of its apps after evaluation. As it turns out, not all of the apps in the collection live up to the promises made in their Metadata. As it's a goal to improve this, writing kind issues upstream or, contributing patches, adds to our broader to do list. It's also questionable, whether we need to actually add every app - take OptimusUI as an example: If there are zero phones with nVidia optimus graphics, do we need to list that app? Other apps in the Collection are x86_64-only, which (if there's no alternative, can introduce a hold-up), but there's hope - if you are interested in Flutter-based apps, just check out this PR (and the approach behind it). If you want to follow our progess (or chime in), this is the issue to watch.

API

Work towards an API has been undergone. While the JSON API is not out yet, as a first step, an extended ATOM feed is out now - featuring a XML namespace of it's own. This adds a simple way to reuse our data.

What's holding the JSON API? Honestly, not much (I already have a custom, working Rust converter on my computer). But an API need documentation, and ... I don't want to iterate unnecessarily on API and documentation (because lazy). There are a few general considerations (and decisions to make first): e.g., the future of our categories taxonomy, reconsiderations regarding the rating system, or the question of removing the scale-to-fit values as Mobile Settings has made these basically unnecessary. We just need planning - which changes need to be done in which order to not have more work than necessary.

If you are interested in using the API, please get in touch to discuss whether the current plans would work for you!

I want to help, where to get started?

We do have a public issue tracker, that lists things that we aim to improve.

All relevant parts of LinuxPhoneApps live in one repository - the repo's README is hopefully helpful. Feel free to ask away in our Matrix room if you have questions!

Fixing existing app or game listings is just one click away (provided you have a framagit.org account) - every listing has an edit link at the bottom of the page.

So if you see that something is wrong, please take the time and help fix it - by fixing it, or by reporting it to the issue tracker or via e-mail.

Adding apps

If you want to help by adding an app:

LPA helper is ugly, but it works. During the LINMOBapps days, Peter seperated games out into a seperate games.csv list, to reduce the workload of maintenance and when adding addtional information. This seperation was kept in place when launching LinuxPhoneApps.org, as over time, in part due to maintainership, that data had diverged in structure.

Thanks to Max, who recently took over maintenance of games listed, we could now merge lists, making the site and tooling around it quite a bit simpler.

While we tried our best to do this properly and not break incoming links, please get in touch via email or on Matrix if you think that mishaps occured - Therefore, we had several values to communicate an apps status:

pre-release for apps that have no tags or releases,

early for new apps in an early project state,

maturing,

mature,

inactive,

unmaintained,

archived.

These have been replaced by a smaller set of status:

pre-release,

released,

archived and, additionally, if a project has seen zero commits in two years,

inactive.

These can be determined via the various APIs of codehosting platforms or via cloning the repos themselves and checking for git tags which is a clear advantage.

The change reduces subjectiveness and ambiguity. What does early mean? And when is a project really mature? One can see this as a function of time, but scope has to be considered, too: For example, a fully-fledged word processor takes way, way longer to mature than a simple Pomodoro timer.

To not remove information, we've added dates: The first commit and the latest commit. Despite having a checker that now programmatically gets all this information for all apps hosted on GitHub and gitlab-, gitea- and forgejo-based code forges (and a slower solution for all other code hosted in git repositories), it still has to be run manually. One painpoint are API keys - we list too many apps to not run into rate-limiting. Thanks, scrapers!

So while we've made progress, there's more to figure out. If you want to help with figuring this out so that we can run our checker, say, weekly, please get in touch via email or on Matrix.
New Listings of Q3/2024: 539 Apps and better app discovery 2024-10-03T19:50:00+02:00 2024-10-03T19:50:00+02:00 https://linuxphoneapps.org/blog/new-listed-apps-q3-2024/
It's October, three thirds of 2024 have already passed. It lasts only two days, but it has content for a about two weeks. It's a nice event, there's no sign-up, no admission - if you're involved with FOSS, and can make, it should just go. Yes, it's a health hazard and overcrowded. But it's such a boost, also.

After having attended FOSDEM 2023, I was sure to go again. Something made me believe that I should give a talk, and so, as the Call for Participation for the FOSS on Mobile devroom was taking place, I figured that it might be interesting to talk about the Linux Phone App Eosystem - not a bad idea. Also, I figured that my live would contain enough minutes and hours to prepare this well enough. This assumption was wrong, and led to a talk with last minutes slides; thankfully, I had somewhat prepared the rest. But as these things go, without time to rehearse, you will not deliver what you may have intended to deliver.

The contents

I started out with a few puns and then went on to talk about the main players in the Linux Phone App Ecosystem; first trying to make clear, that Android is not the way to go.

I then went on a ride through Sailfish OS, Ubuntu Touch and what I called the "new contenders", the GNOME and Plasma Mobile efforts this very website focuesses on. Needless to say, if you want to get into the origins of these projects, and discuss a few highlights from their matters of app distribution, things become challenging in 40 Minute time slot, especially, if you're not a fast talker.

Enough said, maybe.. just watch it?

Watch the recording

FOSDEM 2024 - The Linux Phone App Ecosystem

After that, here's where I think I could have done better.

Areas, where the talk could have been better

Aside from the obvious slide navigations mishaps, and the lack of visual demos, the following should have been said clearer:

Sailfish OS

Sailfish is actually, aside from its stores, able to run flatpak apps. However, it's stack (AFAIR it's the wayland compositor) makes it so, that GTK-based apps can't be run. Still, this should make it possible to run Nheko (and thus have a decent enough) Matrix app.

Ubuntu Touch

I dropped the ball here, when I did not mention the read-only-filesystem - in a way, Ubuntu Touch is the immutable OG. This is a major characteristic. Also, an image of that donation prompt was sorely missed.

New contenders

I am not too unhappy with this, but visuals, again, would have been good.

Interoperability issues when combining apps from different worlds, starting with what we the keyboard fun when running Qt apps on Phosh (non-automatic) and GNOME Shell Mobile (no keyboard at all), should have been mentioned.

The foreseeable issues when running Ubuntu Touch apps on any of the new contenders, that unlike Ubuntu Touch use a swipe up gesture for multi tasking, making it unavailable for in app menu things, also (with Sailfish's UI bits being proprietary, a "just build it and run it" approach is impossible, anyway. It will remain challenging and extra work to make an app feel native to each ecosystem, if it's feasible at all. Still, small as all these efforts are, collectively, we should at least try to make this better.

Where to go from here?

One of my goals with this talk was to name a few examples of apps that essentially work everywhere. I was also touching on the topic of donations and the user appreciation that they can signal in a world of angry bug reports or unfriendly worded feature demands.

Payments though - as I was contacted after the talk, that's likely not worth the hassle, the author of the SailfishOS app Fernschreiber told me, from first hand experience. Transaction costs ruin small payment money transfer - it's a sad fact. Still, if it a mechanism, that can also work for all Linux Desktop users (Flathub is working on this), results may be slightly better if expectations are realistic: This is not iOS, you are unlikely to make a living of one indy app (assuming that's still possible for unknown new-comers over in Apple world, even).

That's the big picture stuff. Personally, I hope to get more in touch with people from both Ubuntu Touch and Sailfish OS, to explore avenues of app interoperability in all directions. Both projects are the most ready for the everyperson, but it would be great if they could participate from the seemingly more energetic space monitored on this website.

Regarding LinuxPhoneApps.org, my 2024 goals include easier maintenance by submitting MRs/PRs to listed projects, so that they can take care of updating listings and are in control of the ways their apps are described (there's a lot more, but this is the most important one, as it can make this project less important, which would be a good thing). This does not mean that I do not intend on making the site better; or that I mean to retire it. New apps showing up are unlikely to be perfect on that metadata; and I don't even know if there are plans to add indicators regarding adaptivity to Discover, Plasma's app management solution.

Conclusion

Overall, given the circumstances, I am fairly happy with my talk. I hope to publish an enhanced/augmented version of it on TilVids and it's huge competitor in March. If you have any feedback, or want to collaborate, do not hesitate to get in touch! But still, things were done: The technical stack was much improved. While most of this work is not directly user-facing, as it's about restructuring the underlying .csv files and adding more and more automatic content checkers, we've now arrived at a stage where we can update listings without a lot of the time-intense churn this was.

As the main contributor of these efforts1 put it in the Matrix group:

Help wanted: upstreaming metadata

The last weeks, I created a script which allows us to automatically update outdated information in the apps.csv file based on AppStream metadata: https://framagit.org/linmobapps/linmobapps.frama.io/-/blob/master/check_via_appstream.py.

This massively decreases manual maintenance overhead and allows us to instead focus on adding additional value like testing the apps, storing mobile compatibility scores and so on.

In order for that workflow to work out, we need your help:

Make sure each repository has an AppStream metadata file. This job will list you the missing ones.

Add missing values: This job will show you where we have more information that reported upstream -> just earch for "missing in upstream AppStream file. Be kind in the description of your PR or MR, after all it's a request you are making and politeness does not cost you money.

In order to reduce duplicate effort, make sure to briefly mention your MR or issue to the issue that tracks progress. Assuming you have a mail client set up on your system, a new new compose window will open that already has a subject, and some text to make us know what this is about. All you need to do is to describe the error and hit send - it helps a lot!

Please use this method and not social media to point out errors - social media is just too ephemeral, and your report may be missed (or cause some unneccessary mental load for maintainers ;-) ).

Help with maintenance!

Overall, maintenance could be better. Sadly my personal life has changed in ways that I (1peter10) have a lot less time to maintain the listings - and at the same time, with more and more listings, there are more projects to watch and maintain. This requires better tooling (e.g., a checker for dead links, or a simple way to follow project releases / commits on "unreleased" projects via RSS/ATOM feeds), that's almost impossible to build for me in the few scraps of time I have in an average work week.

Sadly, due to spammers, framagit has enabled account moderation - signing up for a new account is not instantaneous and may take days. But you can of still contribute quickly: Just clone the repo, create a patch and send it to our devel mailing list!

The way forward

Now: More ways to contribute and communicate

As mentioned above, we've added another way to contribute. Signing up for yet another code forge is something you may not want, and you don't have to. While you could also send patches via email before, there's now an official way for that documented on the devel mailing list.

If you've developed an app (or found an app that's not listed) and don't want to bother with the arcane csv file, feel free to write about it to our discuss mailing list.

Replacing CSV? TOML? metainfo.xml?

Stay tuned for a post later this quarter that will contain my ideas to move beyond the current way which is somewhat convoluted - yes, I wrote "ideas" here, because I need the input of more savvy people to come up with an actual plan. The goal is to form a plan in 2022 and to then implement it in early 2023.

Also: Hacktoberfest

Lastly, we briefly want to mention hacktoberfest.1 While contributing LinuxPhoneApps.org won't help you get a t-shirt, there are a few listed Linux Mobile projects that are accepting contributions during hacktoberfest:

Axolotl,

Cawbird,

Gradience,

Myuzi, and

Nheko

(Thanks to @JJS_10 for helping with compiling this list!)

Feedback, thoughts?

Thank you for reading this post! Merge requests for a system that requires some kind of authentication, be it ActivityPub, Matrix or else, are very welcome, though!

No new representation of the Games List. It's going to land, once apps are "done".

Docs/Resources. We have some, but especially developer resources aren't more than a bunch of links, which makes sense given that I am not a developer, despite the pythonic mess I've created to get this effort to this point.

Why are we launching anyway?

There's no regression compared the previous state: The original JavaScript heavy lists are still here:1

Apps (dubbed "Classical App List" πŸ˜‰)

Games,

Archive, which has been partly re-integrated into apps.csv (with the status set to archived or inactive) and now only lists two apps for which re-integration did not make any sense.

We're also not loosing any Git history, as the original .csv lists are not only meant to stay here, but their repo is still intact and a part of this project. It really should be moved to be part of the same organization, but in order to make this transition easier it will remain where it is. Also, a single source of truth, such as apps.csv, has its benefits - it can be reused in third party projects easily. Yes, CSV is ugly, but as long as there's no replacement (e.g. in XML), we'll have to keep it around.

Also, with all the caveats applied, this should be a lot better then what we're had before, for repology integration alone!

What's next?

Aside from what's in the issue trackers, there's a lot of design work that will need to happen. Several overviews are far from perfect, and I am not even happy with how the app listings are looking right now. They need to be reordered and polished, which will happen over time.

There's a lot of work ahead, but hey, at least we're launched now! πŸ₯³πŸŽ‰

1
They work exactly the same way as they always did – except for some unfixed regressions when dark mode is active.
