The guys next to me are unpacking their battery fireworks, asking me if I think that’s cool.</p> <h1 id="recap_1">Recap <a class="head_anchor" href="#recap_1">#</a></h1> <p>I’ve been in three countries over the last month, or four (technically five) since September. I took three planes, took several Ubers, one sleeper train, one hotel, two hostel. Stayed at friends and friends of friends couches. I’ve stayed at three different apartments. I’ve rented two in parallel. Experienced two wonderful conferences. One I’ve just departed last night (39c3 💜)</p> <p>Well, and during all of this I’ve also worked - fought my battles and I think it all worked out quite well.</p> <p>Anyhow. As you might guess, a lot has happened and I’m greatful I could be an active part in that happening.</p> <p>In hindsight, the year was wonderful - I’ve felt in average better than maybe even forever. There are still more good and wonderful changes ahead, but I would say I’m having a positive streak.</p> <p>Well. I’ve spent a great amount of time thinking about all those things, doing research, often never talking with anyone about them - even though my personality is certainly determined by those ideas.</p> <p>I believe many have something to do with the ridiculous imagination being able to do “better” when it comes to form or function. But I really want to build a green house at least once. It feels like that this would unlock a lot of possibilities. Kinda dreaming of a factory hall which is also serving as a community space. I just realize that such thing exists as a makerspace in Berlin and I was so lucky to visit it once. My hope would be that the factory hall is connected with some farm land.</p> <h3 id="tiny-house_3">Tiny House <a class="head_anchor" href="#tiny-house_3">#</a></h3> <p>Of course, everyone needs to build a tiny house. This could have it’s own dedicated posting I believe</p> <h3 id="stilt-tiny-house_3">Stilt (Tiny) House <a class="head_anchor" href="#stilt-tiny-house_3">#</a></h3> <p>Somehow I’m fascinated with the idea building a house/living space close to an area that can be flooded at any time. I’ve researched/investigated stilt houses for a bit, but nothing fully fits all the ideas I would have in mind. I’m still unsure how practical those are and how well they would actually protect against floods, yet it’s something I’d really like to build one day.</p> <p>I’ve been exploring the possibility of lifting the house on-demand when a flood is coming, but also a house that is permanently on stilts.</p> <p>If it was permanent, and maybe a tiny house what I was thinking about a lot is simply what to do with the bottom-floor space. I feel like it could be it’s own Kitchen/Cooking area, but why not make a regular second floor instead? How would you build all of this in a way that it is safe of floods.</p> <h3 id="heat-recovery-system_3">Heat Recovery System <a class="head_anchor" href="#heat-recovery-system_3">#</a></h3> <p>Somehow I’m amazed by the concept of heat recovery systems, in particular ones that are not cycling but pushing the air through an entire building. Unfortunately in a well insulated house, apparently regular ventilation should be sufficient and not too much of an energy loss anyway. My big dream would be some system that constantly adds fresh air/keeps the entire building on nice CO2 levels.</p> <h3 id="office-pod_3">Office Pod <a class="head_anchor" href="#office-pod_3">#</a></h3> <p>I love office pods, I feel comforted inside them, it feels like being in another space. Again my main dissatisfaction are not enough noise separation and poor temperature/fresh air intakes. I’d really like to build one/few that will catch all the boxes for me. And then I’d like to have that inside my living space, instead of an office.</p> <h3 id="pumped-storage-hydropower_3">Pumped Storage Hydro-Power <a class="head_anchor" href="#pumped-storage-hydropower_3">#</a></h3> <p>Ever since I was a teenager I’ve been fantasizing building a pumped storage mini hydro-power system in my parents garden.</p> <h3 id="water-management-system_3">Water Management System <a class="head_anchor" href="#water-management-system_3">#</a></h3> <p>Speaking of pumped storage, I’ve also spent a great time of building a water management system on my parents property. I’ve thought about all the different ways collecting and transporting water across the property and how I’d create an artificial pond with a walk-able island.</p> <p>Generally, if I had my own land I’d really like to experiment a lot with water storage/collecting systems</p> <h3 id="public-swimming-pool_3">(Public) Swimming Pool <a class="head_anchor" href="#public-swimming-pool_3">#</a></h3> <p>I feel like there are not enough public swimming pools, I feel pools bring a lot of joy to the communities and are generally something to be fascinated about. I’ve been playing in my head with the economics of that and maybe how to combine it with different environmental friendly spins (like collecting rainwater, solar power, …)</p> <h3 id="autonomous-house-on-wheels_3">Autonomous House on Wheels <a class="head_anchor" href="#autonomous-house-on-wheels_3">#</a></h3> <p>Somehow I’m dreaming of a house on wheels that super slowly driving across the landscape/countries in a fully autonomous, solar powered way. The technology wouldn’t need to be as amazing as self-driving cars, simply because it would be driving so slow. I’m dreaming of living in such house, sometimes going on a bike-ride / visiting a town for the day and then returning where ever the house has creeped once I’m returning.</p> <h3 id="laundromat_3">Laundromat <a class="head_anchor" href="#laundromat_3">#</a></h3> <p>I don’t know, I feel like Laundromats are just such incredible places. They are besides hospitals and public transport, probably one of the places where people go through the most emotions. They are a place of waiting, for something good, but also an annoyance at once. Sometimes you might know people, but often you are a stranger and so does everyone else. You might have reasons to interact or maybe just reason to observe.</p> <p>I’ve been trying to do the back of the napkin calculation on how much use you’d need to make a profit, also been looking at particular washing machine prices etc. I feel like running/building a Laundromat is someplace where you can both innovate but also experiment a lot.</p> <h3 id="cinema_3">Cinema <a class="head_anchor" href="#cinema_3">#</a></h3> <p>Totally want to build a cinema one day, maybe a “multi-use” cinema for general events but the cinematic aspects should also be covered. All the technology, sound systems, that go into these spaces is just so amazing.</p> <p>I feel like I first got onto this idea as a young teenager, in the country-side youth center we would have a DIY cinema room, one day when we’ve celebrated my friends birthday we would play there on the Playstation 2 and since then I wanted to experience playing Playstation in an actual cinema.</p> <p>Ever since I’ve learned about Peter Kubelka’s (an others) vision about <a href="proxy.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.filmmuseum.at%2Fen%2Fabout_us%2Fthe_invisible_cinema">“The Invisible Cinema”</a> in which viewers would have blinders that would black-out distractions/other visitors during the viewing experience I was also imagining building my own cinema. During high-school we had to do graphic design and fictional project planning for an event, I chose to do a public cinema screening event - similar to one that already existed at a time in Vienna. I find cinemas just a magical place and the architecture is always such a great mixture between intentionally unintentional or just some amazing piece. Canary Islands were quite tough, I was just exhausted from finishing my previous job and going anywhere. The back then friend was quite hard to deal with and if Lanzarote wasn’t that beautiful I would have almost had a breakdown otherwise.</p> <p>Berlin was great, I’ve met sometimes several people per day, visited to concerts and museums.</p> <p>Around 14. January I started my new job, at an office in Vienna for the first two weeks. …</p> <p>Anywho. I think I’ll give another recap of my 2023 in another posting. What I wanted to say is I didn’t spent a lot of time writing my resolutions a year ago.</p> <p>Today is different, I’m at my apartment in Portugal. Unfortunately my friends who wanted to join just canceled for tonight, I’ve prepared Pizza and planned for a nice evening together. I’ve emotionally been at the bottom, and I’m slowly climbing out, though there are walls I’m hitting occasionally. Furthermore, I started loving sunset swims, it still takes a bit of courage to go to the beach after a short unproductive day at work - but for example today just felt wonderful. The beach wasn’t busy, it wasn’t too hot or windy, the water was not too cold and there were practically no waves. I swam a bit out, experimenting with different swimming methods. Later I’ve started diving, though without glasses, after sunset, it gets quite scary underwater quickly. I ended up just slowly swimming back and then just floating on my back for the last few minutes. Even though the sky was clear, because of the twilight I noticed some very fast moving thin clouds.</p> <p>I hope I’ll continue slowly waking up from torpor and becoming an integrated part of society again. I miss being close, but I’ve unlearned that anyway. I had to leave my temporary apartment by end of February, with no job and no plan where to move next. After a sudden incredible price increase in any short-term offering I ended up renting something for just two weeks to get some extra time to figure things out and turns out - I actually did figure something out!</p> <p>So in the heart of my <a href="proxy.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Foo.svbtle.com%2Fnew-year-s-resolutions-2022">New Year’s Resolutions</a> I thought maybe I should already celebrate a bit of my successes.</p> <p>First of all, I found a lovely apartment, completely unfurnished - which is of course a great challenge, but let me tell you now that I have my own bed, couch, desk, fridge, … it feels so good.</p> <p>Besides fending a long-term rental, I started working at a new place in June. 100% remote with a super international team. Things are still very exciting and scary, but I’m trying to hold up and keep progressing learning new things and so forth. This also means I made a big jump with lot’s of the bureaucracy, but there is still plenty to come - so wish me luck with that.</p> <p>On the diving front, I got diving glasses - went diving, got caught by a RIP current and instantly lost my new glasses in the waves. But let me tell you, this was so scary - I was just thankful that I’ve managed getting out safely. Since then I got a new set and I’m occasionally going diving, it’s more a learning to hold my breath than nice snorkeling, the beach close by is more of a surfer place than somewhere you’d be diving…</p> <p>I’m trying to get pierced, but somehow in my town there is only one person that pierces and I want to get tunnels and still didn’t work out. It has been a year, or actually a year and a month already.</p> <p>So much happened, though little that was part of my previous resolutions.</p> <p>For example, I’ve never started studying in 2021. This is because my shared apartment came to an unexpected end. Announced in June, the main tenant decided moving out, which resulted in all of us having to leave. Very sad 🥲indeed. But this also meant I wouldn’t live close to TU Berlin 🎓 anymore.</p> <p>Anyway, what happens next is I decide to leave Berlin, leave Germany and get closer to the sea. I’m right now writing this close to the northern Atlantic ocean, namely Lisbon/Portugal. I figured I already know a bit of Spain, but Portugal I don’t at all. I’ve been here since October (with breaks). I could write an entire posting just on this topic itself. Currently I’m still at an airbnb, lets see what happens next.</p> <p>I don’t exactly want to focus on my previous goals, I haven’t reached nearly any of them in the way I’ve wished for. These employees then get to vote for representatives that get stake within the company for representing worker rights. This was needed to counteract company interest over their employees basic needs.</p> <h3 id="how-could-this-work-for-users_3">How could this work for users? <a class="head_anchor" href="#how-could-this-work-for-users_3">#</a></h3> <p>Well, why shouldn’t we extend something like this for users?</p> <p>The idea is basically, if a web company reaches a certain size (by users/countries/…) - users <em>somehow magically</em> get to initialize the process for electing a users council.</p> <p>This council would then become more included within organizational structure, would get special insights/space within the organization (including seeing more what happens behind the curtains, …) and get to decide certain decisions within that company that would then hopefully lead to more user oriented needs over profits and data mining.</p> <h3 id="why_3">Why? <a class="head_anchor" href="#why_3">#</a></h3> <p>So that’s it. Very simple idea, which will most likely never work out. Yet, I do believe we really have to keep thinking about how we can get back control over the web giants.</p>
