I’ve been following the evolution of WebAuthn for quite some time now. However, it was only after Apple popularised it last year with the introduction of Passkeys that I started receiving questions about it.
My answer has always been: “I’m looking forward to supporting it in Secrets, and I hope Apple announces something related to Passkeys and third-party apps at WWDC.”
Today marks the second day of this year’s WWDC, and based on the documentation that’s already available, I can confirm that Apple did what I was hoping for:

At last… after some issues with Apple’s submission process Secrets 3.4.0 has been released! Apologies for the delay but the issue was not our side. But enough chit chat, let’s get into it…
Password AutoFill This feature was only mentioned in passing during Apple’s WWDC and I have yet to find a reference to it on Apple’s marketing pages. But it’s 😘. Perhaps the most underrated feature on macOS Big Sur?

It’s been a long time since the last update. That certainly wasn’t intended, but I didn’t expect a pandemic. Anyway, the wait is over and I believe it was worth it! Version 3.4.0 of Secrets for iOS is now available on the App Store, and with it a major new feature.
Remote Access With this update you can now use Secrets on your iOS device as a remote keychain for filling Logins and Credit Cards on a browser running on another machine, such as on Windows or Linux.

Out at last, out at last, Secrets 3.2 is out last!
This release is a bit tardy but I believe the wait was worth it. This update focuses on iOS 13 and macOS Catalina specific features but also includes many other noteworthy features. So lets get to it!
Dark Mode iOS Arguably the most anticipated feature of iOS 13. Since adding Dark Mode to Secrets for Mac last year, you have definitely made it clear you wanted the same on Secrets for iOS.

Version 3.0, a major update to Secrets, is now available and packs many new features!
Attachments This is certainly one of our top requested features. You can finally attach files to any item in Secrets!
A commonly mentioned use case is attaching a photo of your bank’s second factor matrix card so that you can login without taking out your wallet. Of course, you can also use it to store pictures of your driver’s license, national id card, receipts or any other confidential document.

Secrets 2.8.5 has been released and alongside various bug fixes and minor improvements the Mac version also includes a completely rewritten Safari extension.
The new extension works exactly the same way and continues to serve as a facilitator for Secrets itself. That is, it simply informs Secrets about pages with fillable forms which are only filled at Secrets’s request. Like we’ve mentioned before, only Secrets deals with your passphrase and data.

Support for Mojave’s Dark Mode is included in version 2.8 of Secrets for Mac. And it looks stunning!
Light & Dark Mode on macOS Mojave
var dark = true; var darkSrc = "/images/blog/0013-version_2.8_for_Mac/mojave_dark.jpg"; var lightSrc = "/images/blog/0013-version_2.8_for_Mac/mojave_light.jpg"; function toggleMode() { dark = !dark; switchToDarkMode(dark); } function switchToDarkMode(darkMode) { var img = document.getElementById("mojave") img.src = darkMode ? darkSrc : lightSrc; } switchToDarkMode(dark); Now when you’re in gremlin mode, working trought the night, Secrets will fit right in and your eyes will be spared of the bright light!

Happy iOS 12 release day! 🎉 This new iOS release comes with some exciting new features and Secrets 2.8 — also available today — is there to make the best of them.
Password AutoFill Whereas previously restricted to credentials stored in the Keychain, new in iOS 12 is the ability to fill logins in apps and Safari with credentials stored in 3rd party password managers such as Secrets.
No longer is it necessary for app developers to explicit add support for 3rd party password managers, nor for users to use the share button to open an extension and fetch login details.

Once you commit to it, using a password manager is liberating. Having unique and strong passwords for all your logins creates warm fuzzy feeling inside. You feel like you are in control of your digital life.
This is only possible because there’s a trust relationship between you and your password manager. And your passphrase is the link in between.
Any serious password manager will derive encryption keys from your master passphrase.

The great team at Panic just launched Transmit 5, a great update to an already awesome file transfer app for Mac. The news prompted this post about a little-known feature built into Secrets for Mac.
Since the first version of Secrets if you hover over a service associated with a Login you can quickly connect to that service by clicking the button. For example, if you have https://www.icloud.com associated with your Apple ID Login clicking that button will open that page on Safari.

When you first run Secrets the main window will open with an item list on the left and a detail pane one the right. This layout is very common on the Mac, Apple’s Mail and Contacts applications use it also. You select an item on the left to view its details on the right. For the majority of users it’s a well-known concept.
This layout works very well when you need to view or edit your item’s details.

In the past week Secrets was featured in both the Mac and iOS App Stores on the “New Apps We Love” category. This exposure resulted in fantastic new customers with interesting questions and comments. Some of these new customers are also new to the concept of managing passwords and want to know more on how to fully take advantage of a password manager such as Secrets.
To understand the benefits of using a password manager one must understand the dangers of not having a good password discipline.

Since launching Secrets 6 months ago we knew we had to offer some type of trial for prospective users, and understandably this was often requested. At the time our priority was to release our Minimum Viable Product (MVP).
For the past 6 months we have been squashing bugs, implementing features that didn’t make our MVP and applying polish throughout. At the same time, we’ve been studying various options to provide some sort of trials for users wanting to test Secrets before buying.

When developing Secrets we purposely avoided using browser extensions to do login filling on websites. The reasons are manyfold:
our users should not have have to type their passphrase anywhere except on the Secrets application (specially not in the browser); only the Secrets application should handle your data and should always serve as gateway for it; establishing communication between the browser extension and Secrets also presented some security concerns; users would have to manually install the extension.

One important feature that got left out of our initial release was the ability to generate one-time passwords.
A one-time password (OTP) is a password valid for a single use against some sort of authentication mechanism. Nowadays, the most common of these are time-based one-time passwords (TOTP) that are usually a string of numeric characters valid as an authentication token for a brief period of time (usually 30 seconds).
Companies such as Apple, Google, Facebook and Dropbox employ TOTPs as the second factor in the now popular two-factor authentication (2FA).

Update: Secrets 3.0 introduced a new storage format so this post no longer applies. Please see the security overview for up to date information.

When choosing a password manager it’s expected that one of the main concerns relates to information security. Keeping your information secure takes many forms but the most notable is how your data is stored on disk. Namely, how is it encrypted and protected.
Cryptography is hard… we know.

What makes Secrets better? Modern encryption — Secrets relies on the popular Sodium library and its implementations of modern cryptography algorithms such as XChaCha20 and Poly1305 to protect the user’s data.

Security Overview Secrets was designed to be secure from the start. That means using standard and strong encryption algorithms and having every feature designed with end to end encryption in mind. This page details how Secrets stores and handles your data but if you just want a quick summary:
Secrets uses the Sodium library for most of its cryptographic functions. Specifically, it uses Argon2 as password based key derivation function that’s fed with your passphrase to generate the key used to protect the main key.

Security Overview Secrets was designed to be secure from the start. That means using standard and strong encryption algorithms and having every feature designed with end to end encryption in mind. This page details how Secrets stores and handles your data but if you just want a quick summary:
