Hello Chris and Alex!
I've been listening to Self Hosted since the beginning, and what you guys are doing here is absolutely amazing. Thank you, and keep up the good work!
I've been meaning to write in for a while, but never seemed to get around to it until I heard Episode 51. As I was listening to it, I seemed to connect with many of the topics you discussed, and just wanted to touch on a few of them.
Over the past few years I have been slowly de-Google-fying my life, trying this and that to get me to a state of privacy respecting productivity. Here is what I have found.
The two most important pieces of my setup are Nextcloud (for files, calendar, tasks, and notes) and ZOHO (for email and contacts). I use a Pixel 4a running Lineage OS with OpenGApps Nano. I use K9 mail for email with OpenKeychain integration for GPG signing and encryption; DAVx5 for calendar, contact, and task syncing, and Etar, Tasks.org (app) for calendar and task management; FolderSync Pro to sync my pictures and media to Nextcloud nightly; FreeOTP+ to handle my 2FA codes; KeePass2Android because of its NextCloud integration for my KeePassXC database; and my app store is split between F-Droid and the Play Store.
On a side note, another listener previously mentioned using FolderSync Pro for syncing to Nextcloud. I've been using it for years, and it is totally rock solid. I NEVER have any issues with it, and it syncs like a boss.
I do have to side with Brent with the practical side of this endeavor. There are certain Google apps that I still use because they are just easier, and the non-Google equivalent would be cumbersome at best. The main one is Google Maps. Between the traffic integration and the info they have for each POI, it's hard to beat.
Thanks again, and have a safe road trip!
