Steve Asks: How to build something as a favor that you can hand off?

Hey Guys,

Me again. Since you love getting emails here’s another one for you. This will be as much an ad for Linode as it will be for advice lol.

I’m the VP of my kid’s high school band parent association, and we decided we were going to create a website among a bunch of other things. Of course, since I’m the only one that knows how to use more than Microsoft Office I was asked to do it.

So first thing I did was head over to linode, make an account and claim my $100 credit with linode.com/coder, and I had a Wordpress sever up and running in literally 5 minutes with dns and an ssl cert. I was actually amazed how how simple it was to get up and running. 10 minutes after making the account not only did I have the server running and configured but I had a mock website up and running. Absolutely awesome.

But after a week of doing different mock ups for the other board members to look at I started thinking to myself; in 3 years when my kid graduates, I’m going to have to turn this over to someone who probably uses password123 for every login, and literally not know a thing about ssh, updating a Debian server, etc.

That made me think it would probably be best to set this up on something like bluehost, where all they have to do is login and aren’t going to have to worry about ssh, ssh keys, firewall configs, security, console commands (I know sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade is so complicated 🤣).

What do you guys think? Also, Egon is amazing, he is instantly my hero 🤣
