After your Gnome bashing I thought I'd write to you about an alternative I have been using for a few years.
It's the terminal. Not just the commandline though (never use `cd`) but a combination of text UI applications like tmux (more useful than tabs), Ranger (a file manager), vim, gitui, etc.
Pros:
- highly modular
- highly customizable
- fully integrate with scripts and the commandline
- easy to write your own
- never use the mouse, reduce injuries
- the UI practically never changes unless you want it to
- best of all: never pulls the rug out from under you by changing the window focus
Cons:
- You still need a web browser
