agates on Virtual Remote Desktops
Re: cloud dev boxes. My last gig we configured a medium sized azure virtual desktop environment. It was really good. Anyone that got into it mostly ditched their laptops.
That was primarily because of limitations for budgets on new hardware and also CIFS latency problems, so the cloud machines were just closer to the data. VPNs introduced so much latency
The virtual desktops are all RDP based like i imagine the dev boxes will be, and the azure virtual desktop clients even work on Android tablets etc. We replaced Citrix and it blew the pants off it
In the end we even had a lot of engineers using the environment with 3D accelerated CAD setups.
In a gig like that I'd take a virtual remote desktop over local any day of the week, assuming it's all the same RDP based system.
(I'm still predicting they will do the exact same thing with WSL and Linux apps over RDP, if they aren't already)
