Squishy IO Writes in About our Nix Coverage
Hi LUP!
This is going to be a bit of a cliche but I was going to write in about all the nixOS being too much but before I wrote in I figured, what the heck, I’ve a silverblue install with boxes, lemme just throw it on there and check it out once - and its COOL. MIND BLOWINGLY COOL. nixOS is what I wanted from Silverblue and I suspect though the average joe doesn’t know it but this is what anybody wants from an operating system - not just desktop operating systems either.
What I would like to ask people who are feeling a bit salty of listening to it, including me, kind of - is: just go to the website and download the Graphical Install ISO (ignore all the other package manager and things they talk about, the technicalities are only getting in the way - don’t see the RPM packaging format when installing Fedora, afterall)
- throw it on a VM in boxes so you absolutely don’t give a flying monkey what happens on it
- go through the install, let it erase and partition itself, who cares
- it will take suspicious long to install, let it; meanwhile read the first 20 lines of configuration syntax and pretend you understand what the functional programming thing is talking about and see how to change configuration: sudo nixos-rebuild {build, boot, switch}
- once in, go about however you would set up a regular install (if your usual installation requires ansible or something, skip it) one by one, do things like: change the hostname, install tilix, change shell to fish, remove gnome music, install docker (just google these as you need to)
- run hello-world docker image
- you could look into installing apps via flatpak but i haven’t yet
There, that’s nixOS as far as I’m concerned and probably care, I don’t need to know all the other things it could do just like I don’t care about fedora coreOS does, who cares? it’s just a distro.
oh and there’s this Home Manager thing but who cares? i don’t think i have it
I am thinking of switching my silverblue install to nix
