Here’s the first update for 2026. This can still be a bit spotty as we might forget things but we’re working on that. If you spot something missing please provide a merge request.

Note that we track when a merge request was opened. It might not be merged yet and thus the functionality might not yet be available in the next release. We welcome review comments and testing!

Quiet some effort went into pipewire and libgvc testing so things can work with the current wireplumber release as well as the upcoming pipewire 1.6 (currently 1.5.x) which changes some things around Bluetooth.

Phosh 2025 in Retrospect

As in previous, years we took another look back at what changed in Phosh in 2025 and instead of just updating our notes why not again share it again here:

The Phosh developers focus from day one was to make devices running Phosh daily drivable without having to resort to any proprietary OSes as a fallback. This year showed improvements in some important areas people rely on like cell broadcasts and emergency calls, further improving usability and starting some ground work we’ll need for some upcoming features.

The xdg-cutouts-v1 Wayland protocol

Why the Effort Link to heading

This is currently merged as experimental protocol into Wayland protocols.

The notches, camera cutouts, and rounded corners of smartphones are areas that can occlude important information in a client application’s window, as the corresponding physical pixels are usually missing from the display panel. Likewise, waterfall edges and low-resolution areas used for under-display cameras should not contain important information either, as those parts of the display are difficult to read.

Audio Roles, Volumes and Routes

What if you want to have your phone’s alarm clock volume different from your music playback volume and have the later go to speakers while alarms should continue to go to the phone’s speaker?

While this could be handled manually via per application volume and sink setups, this doesn’t scale well on phones that also have emergency alerts, incoming calls, voice assistants, etc. It also doesn’t specify how to handle simultaneous playback - for instance, if an incoming call rings while music is playing.

On Screen Keyboard Text Correction and Completion

phosh-osk-stub is an alternative on screen keyboard (OSK) for Phosh featuring several methods of text auto correction and completion. In the following we look at the different options available and how to use and configure them:

For any form of completion to be available, the application that features the text input needs to support the text-input-unstable-v3 Wayland protocol. If that isn’t available phosh-osk-stub will enter a fall back mode where it acts more like a physical keyboard (via the virtual-keyboard Wayland protocol) and disable completion. In this case the completion bar (the area above the keys showing the completion entries) will be hidden. Thankfully major toolkits likt GTK4, GTK3, Qt6 and lots of others support the text-input-unstable-v3 protocol nowadays so this is not much of an issue. Note that Chromium/Electrion based apps only recently gained support so you might still hit apps that don’t support this but let’s from here on assume that the application featuring the text input field does support it.

This is meant to give an orientation to end users coming from proprietary operating systems, by no means do we intend to derogate anyone’s work.

Make sure to also check out other distributions like postmarketOS as they often offer broader (and more up to date) device support.

Phosh is a group of people that care about freeing the mobile devices in our pockets from proprietary operating systems. It is also a graphical shell targeting mobile devices running a (close to mainline) Linux kernel. This currently includes the PinePhone and Librem 5 as well as devices initially shipping with Android (like the OnePlus 6/6T or Pocophone F1). It is shipped in Linux distributions like postmarketOS or Debian/Mobian and can also be used for devices that currently don’t have a mainline Linux option by repurposing the Android kernel via e.g. the Droidian project. It builds on well known components from the Linux ecosystem like GTK, GNOME, the wlroots compositor library and others. A overview about the technical components can be found in this overview.

Since phoc 0.39.0 it is possible to configure which keys unidle your phone (which results in unblanking the screen).

The current default is that all keys unblank which is usually fine for e.g. laptops but not the desired result for phones and tablets where this depends on the position and function of keys. Volume keys and other exposed keys usually shouldn’t unblank - maybe with the exception of some Home buttons on devices that have those.

Phosh has support for plugins which can be used to customize and extend certain aspects as per your liking without touching the internal source code.

Currently Phosh supports plugins for lock-screen and quick-settings. Lock-screen plugins appear when your phone is in locked state. Plugins here can be used to show information that doesn’t need one to unlock the screen. Examples include emergency information, upcoming events etc.

One thing we notice ever so often is that although Phosh’s source code is publicly available and upcoming changes are open for review the feedback loop between changes being made to the development branch and users noticing the change can still be quiet long.

One of the central pieces on small screens without physical keyboards it the on screen keyboard (OSK). Ever so often people want to experiment with alternative keyboards to e.g. explore alternative ways of text input (via speech or swipe) or look into how to support languages and scripts that aren’t supported by default.

Cell broadcasts are a notification systems in mobile broadband networks to inform all mobile devices (like smartphones) in a certain area about security hazards like extreme weather or human made disasters. It’s somewhat similar to SMS but instead of being sent from one device to another it’s sent to all devices in that area. The messages can be sent to all devices in a certain area or a whole country.

While we had some Phosh stickers at this years conferences the answer to the question if there are any tshirts or hoodies was unfortunately no. This has changed and you can get tshirts and hoodies with a digital print of the Phosh logo from spreadshirt now.

We don’t make any revenue from this. All the printing, payment and shipping is handled by spreadshirt. All products use 100% Bio Cotton (Stanley/Stella).

Phosh 0.27.0 together with GNOME calls 45.alpha.0 added initial support for emergency calling from the locked phone screen. The following gives a short overview on the involved interfaces so you can check if this should already work for your provider or country, how to enable this feature and where the journey is going.

The following gives an overview on how the Phone Shell (phosh) and the Phone Comppositor (phoc) get information about a device’s display notches and how you can add support for new devices.

Disclaimer: I’m a Librem 5 user so I don’t have to worry about notches and cutouts at all. I basically wrote the initial notch implementations to make it easier to use phosh on non Linux first devices. It’s also possible that future Librem 5 iterations might use more available screen estate and hence might also have notches so it’s good to be prepared.

phosh is graphical shell for mobile, touch based devices like smart phones. It’s the default graphical shell on Purism’s Librem 5 (and that’s where it came to life) but projects like postmarketOS, Mobian and Debian have picked it up putting it into use on other devices as well and contributing patches.
