So what trait is it appropriate for one gender to have, but not the other (or another?). As the 1980s, all the traits attributed to masculinity were expected of adults in the 1990s, and by the aughts. Everyone is expected to pay bills on time (or contact creditors to negotiate a payment plan). Everyone is expected to be amicable to coworkers, exes, fellow motorists and anyone else that that requires good behavior and negotiation.
Over [here](https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/post/29393825/15531357) I explained what ideals of masculinity inspired me as a young man. (Sorry about the inelegant link) which was inspired by the cold war: the ability to have power (sometimes immense power) and _not_ use it, even when provoked. But again, that now comes down to adulting: being responsible.
But then we noticed that corporations don't have to treat us the way we're expected to treat them or each other, and there's this whole privileged class (usually, the ownership class) who expects to be able to behave like toddlers and get their way, while the rest of us put up with it. And they're not _actual_ toddlers (which have the advantage of being cute, empathetic and willing to learn) rather they're elected officials and upper management.
And now, masculinity, according to Donald Trump and the loudest voices of the manosphere, people l like Matt Walsh, Joe Rogan and Ben Shapiro, is simply having power and using it to behave offensively while others suffer.
In the 90s and aughts, I was a gender abolitionist, expecting that different body bits don't make one a better automotive mechanic, or sous chef, or crochet enthusiast and creator, or Linux application coder. Heck, once the San Francisco Fire Department started training women, we soon had top firefighters who were neither male nor Irish.
The only reason I'm _not_ a gender abolitionist now is because trans folk get _a whole lot_ out of being their true gender, rather than their birth-assignment.
I supposed the next step is asking trans men what _they_ see as masculine, knowing that it's likely to be different than what is assumed in the alt-right and by podders like Rogan, Walsh and Shapiro.
Still, I answer to all pronouns, and consider myself enby, just specifically not a man. I'm too ashamed of what manhood looks like to the mainstream. I had friend that got together with a guy when she was around 19. A few months later, they moved away together to a little island down south. After about 2 months, they had this little nothing argument. But he punched her square in the face. That was her first hint that he was a cunt.
Seven. FUCKING. YEARS. Later. And shes on the phone to me, crying, telling me that hes had her on the floor and kicking into her stomach while shes 5 months pregnant(this is when I found out everything that had been going on). I told her to pack her shit, I was coming over to take her to her mothers. But she didnt want that, because she had fallen out with her mother... guess what caused that? A day later, they are loved up again like nothing had happened. And Im the fucking asshole for wanting to kick his cunt in for what he did to her. It took another year, and her kids being blind in one eye before she finally let me take her to her mothers.
Im not blaming her, but fuck me, she had plenty of warnings who this guy was before their lives got tangled up like they did. And Im but "I love him." is some bullshit.
Guys are like this as well. Picking the same horrible women over and over and over again. Gold diggers and social butterflies, pushing other forms of abuse. And the dumb bastards think "nah, it'll be fine." and then they find out she was fucking all his friends.
