5·10 天前Stratt’s characterisation in the film was very different. She came off as just another member of the hail mary team instead of the badass inhuman utilitarian boss she was in the book. A change for the worse IMO, though I think I’m in the minority there as one of her new scenes is supposedly very popular.
Grace was also quite different for that matter, though I’m more conflicted about that change.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is an old movie that couldn't be made today?English
18·10 天前Project Hail Mary was practical first. Real sets, real puppet, with digital enhancements. There is a scene that was filmed with loads of LEDs on wires to cover the shot in blinking red lights. I think it pays off hugely and the film is better for it all.
At the moment I think it’s an outlier and most films will continue to just film green screens and tennis balls but it might herald the return of practical, maybe even full-scale animatronics! I can only hope.

7·13 天前I really like how rotating the camera works on the track pad - the right track pad works as a right joystick, but crucially has momentum. So I could do a quick swipe on the pad and the camera would continue moving for a moment after. It also allows fine speed control by changing how quickly I swipe. Once I got used to it, I could make very quick and accurate orientation changes. Much better than joystick imo where you have to hold it down, using up your thumb for a second or two while you turn. As a bonus, the track pad also could be used as buttons so your thumb is already in position to get mashing again.
There was a bus there too and the goose lingered in front of it
Very strange that the second attempt wasn’t simply stricken from the record if it wasn’t allowed at all. If second attempts weren’t allowed, why give them a third attempt? I wonder if there was a proper way to get a second attempt that wasn’t followed, like you have to apply to the state exam body rather than handling it in house.
On the first point, it might have been a combined grade so that the fail is based on doing badly in multiple components. Eg if you take a French exam here, it’s
- 20% aural
- 55% written
- 25% oral
We only hear about the oral component because of the interesting story, but decent chance the student was a bozo and bombed the other components too.

I continue this vibe by looking for covers and live versions of the same song. Doesn’t hit 17.000 but I can usually get enough to last me until I get bored with it and I also find the definitive version to come back to later
Most of the mistakes they have to fix are incorrect version numbering.
That’s such a disingenuous presentation of the facts. Of course there is no such thing as truly renewable energy, but there is a difference in kind between a supply of energy that is practically inexhaustible on the timescale of human civilisation (what people mean when they say renewable) and energy produced from a limited fuel supply on earth (non renewable).
Solar (and its byproduct energies wind, hydro, biomass), tidal, geothermal are not in the same category as fission of rare heavy metals.
I say all this as someone pro-nuclear who agrees that we should use it while it is still fissionable.
I guess it would work much more often, but also not all currents are electrons flowing (Eg ions, holes arguably). I doubt the convention causes much trouble for people
Guessing here, but +/- is good for describing them as binary opposites as that system already exists. This is a good thing assuming there are two types of charge/pole which behave in opposite ways (Eg move differently in a field). It’s also just good to use numbers so that we can describe the amount of + and the amount of -, which numbers already do. It also allows us to describe neutral as neither + nor -, but 0. Again, we already have a scaffold there for numbers and it’s easy to copy it for new things when that makes sense.

Explain Like I'm Five@lemmy.world•How do glasses work? If I took a magnifying glass to burn it from the sun. How come the same thing doesn't happen to my eyes even just staring up at the sun for 5 sec?English
1·3 个月前The retina is not as small as a pinhead, but the light from any source doesn’t get focused over the whole thing, it gets focused to a point. Anything else would mean the image is blurred, defeating the point of the glasses.

1·3 个月前Right, but we’re talking about the eye, which glasses are made to focus light into a pin-point with in combination with the natural refractive properties of the eye itself when placed at a specified distance from the eye. Naturally if the glasses were specifically created with a more appropriate focal length, it would be much easier to start a fire with them.

1·3 个月前I’m not sure this is correct. Is it not the case that when your glasses are the proper prescription for your eye, the light from any point source is focused onto one place on your retina? Otherwise your vision would be blurred with the image being spread over an area (the normal situation for people with myopia or hyperopia while not wearing their glasses)
But yes, don’t look directly into the sun, with or without glasses.
I’ve only seen him in half a dozen things, not including My So Called Life. I think he’s been terrible in all but one role, which was in WeCrashed. In that, he did a great job of playing a creepy weirdo. Based on that experience, he might do a decent job of skeletor

2·4 个月前Crust on top is not the distinguishing feature between pies and tarts. Tarts often have top crusts. The only consistent difference is the angle and sturdiness of the sides - tarts have vertical (or nearly), sturdy sides, pies have angled sides that are less sturdy.
Email works (this is a joke, I do not know if this works)
