I wanted to share an excerpt from one of my favorite podcast hosts, Megan Leatherman. The words in the episode To All the Edgewalkers really resonated with me and are inspiring.

So much support right here in the little web, the little ecological niche that we’re in. But we have to invite in that help. We have to invite our ancestors in and we have to be clear about the help that we’re asking for. As edgewalkers, especially in these times, it is our mandate to live each day holding the threads of both worlds at once.

Living with the awareness that we are part of a vast web that is mysterious, that cannot fully be known, that has implications in our day-to-day, mundane, material life, as well as in our spirit, dreamtime, other world life. We are here in precious bodies and we are also spirit and those two things cannot be separated.

We are invited to remember that our choices have ripple effects that we cannot always see and that this life is worth living to its fullest edge, that these edges are gifts. We’re meant to meet new edges and grow and change.

And a lot of us have bought into this idea that nothing really matters or that, you know, even if we’re like spiritual or we identify as spiritual, we sort of live under this haze like our, this belief that our words don’t really have consequences or that promises can be broken or that relationships can be sort of set aside or don’t really matter.

And I think in previous times throughout human history, of course, there can be a lot of like unhelpful superstition or things that just get kind of wild. But among our indigenous ancestors, let’s say like my indigenous ancestors in Europe, I think there was a much deeper profound level of etiquette and support and awareness that the choices we made mattered.

The way we approached each thing in our day to day life mattered. The words that we spoke mattered that these things have echoes in this world and in the next.

And sometimes as I’m doing my own ancestralization work, I’m realizing this more and more and it has given me a new perspective just on how I spend my time and my life. I talked about in a newsletter recently that between M-Bulk on February 1st and the Spring Equinox, I decided not to watch TV by myself. Like I was just in a really not helpful pattern of watching a lot of TV at night. I was so tired. ….

Pygotham 2023 Keynote On Community

Reshama Shaikh was invited to be a keynote speaker at PyGotham 2023.

About

In 2023, the US Surgeon General issued a report on the Our Epidemic of Loneliness & Isolation: Healing Effects of Social Connection and Community. In this talk, we examine the importance of community and the experiences of a few community organizers in the open source space. We explore getting started, staying involved and leaving communities.

Reshama talks about Python and open source communities: the good parts (motivations of joining and contributing), and the bad (things that cause people to leave). She shared examples of communities that did great work but are now no longer operating.

This is in recognition for my volunteer community contributions for the past 8 years.

The above members help support the Python ecosystem by being phenomenal leaders, sustaining the growth of the Python scientific community, maintaining virtual Python communities, maintaining Python libraries, creating educational material, organizing Python events and conferences, starting Python communities in local regions, and overall being great mentors in our community. Each of them continues to help make Python more accessible around the world. To learn more about the new Fellow members, check out their links above.

Top Line Summary

Sprints are working sessions to contribute to an open source library. The goals and achievements differ between Developer and Community sprints. The long-term impact of open source sprints, particularly community events, is not easily quantifiable or measurable. Positive outcomes of sprints have slowly been emerging, and for that reason, to realize the value of open source sprints requires playing the “long game”.

About

We all use open source tools in various capacities, yet knowing how to contribute to open source is not as well known or accessible. The limited knowledge and education surrounding contributing to open source could be one explanation of the low participation rates by underrepresented persons in open source. Open source sprints are hands-on “workshops” or “hackathons” where contributors collaborate to resolve coding and documentation issues posted on a GitHub repository.

Reshama shares how she organized her first open source sprint in 2017, which was in-person and held in New York City. Over the next 5 years, she organized in-person sprints from San Francisco, USA to Nairobi, Kenya, as well as pivoting to online sprints due to the global pandemic. In this keynote, Reshama shares highlights, challenges and lessons learned from the sprints.

Introduction

Prior to 2020, most data sprints were held in person during intensive 8-hour-long days. Data Umbrella founder, Reshama Shaikh, for example, led several in-person sprints in New York (2017, 2018, 2019), Nairobi (2019) and San Francisco (2019). Data Umbrella had always been interested in developing online resources and exploring ways to enable virtual participation, but this was not able to become a priority until 2020 when the pandemic forced everything online including data sprints. It was clear that an 8-hour in-person event could not just switch to being an 8-hour online event. So the move to online data sprints required the team to rethink the format and mechanisms of the event.

This article was co-authored with Nidhin Pattaniyil.

We cover how to build a cross-platform mobile app (for both iOS and Android) using React Native and TensorFlowJS React Native adaptor.

As mobile phones have become more accessible, consequently, mobile use has been increasing. Users are utilizing mobile devices over desktop more frequently, and apps on mobile are in high demand. These internet-connected devices provide an opportunity to bring the inference models closer to the user.
