Routing issues resolved.

We are experiencing a network routing issue with one of our networks on one of our network providers. This mostly affects non-core riseup services and 3rd party hosted servers. A support issue has been submitted to the provider, they are usually pretty fast at responding/fixing, but no ETA for a fix currently.

Email is backlogged due to the outage, it is being processed in batches and will be delivered.

Power has been restored, an inventory of circuit draws and a rebalancing of circuit loads happened. Things are back to normal now, sorry for the interruption!

Someone is on-site resolving issue now. Services are starting to return to normal, but not everything is resolved yet.

Due to an overloaded circuit at our datacenter, several riseup services are currently unavailable. We will update this status information when we have an ETA.

One of our Paris gateways has suffered a fatal hardware problem and will not come back. We are working to replace it, but until we are able, we will have one less gateway available in that region. This will result in slightly degraded VPN performance as more resources must be shared.

Identified: The version of RiseupVPN for Windows was built with an older and unsupported version of the underlying cryptographic library. A new version of the Windows client is being prepared to fix this issue. You will need to update when it becomes available. Having trouble connecting to RiseupVPN and running Windows - time to upgrade!

If you are using Windows and are unable to connect to RiseupVPN, then you need to upgrade your client.

The reason for this requirement is because a low-risk vulnerability was discovered in the Qt Installer Framework, which is used by RiseupVPN which can be triggered on RiseupVPN release previous to 0.21.11. We consider the vulnerability to be low risk, because several conditions are needed to trigger the vulnerability (original installation in a non-standard path, plus a non-privileged malicious user having access to the machine to overwrite the openvpn executable).

We and other e-mail providers have been subject to a DDoS attack disrupting our services. We received an e-mail blackmailing us: if we don’t pay, they will continue to attack us. We will not pay, we can’t accept blackmail and we will do everything possible in our hands to mitigate the effects.

A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) is an attack aiming to make one service unavailable for others, using multiple sources for the attack makes it very complex to handle. We have taken several meassures against them, and we keep improving our systems to resist them but it’s still possible to face one that can produce a disruption in our services.

In the case this happens we want to let you know the following:

There might be problems connecting to our services. Please wait a little and try again later.
There is no risk for your data.
We will keep this website (riseupstatus.net) updated
We will be also tweeting updates @riseupnet
We will be actively working to minimize as much as possible this attack and get things back to normal as soon as possible.

As of today, Riseup has changed our primary certificate that we have been using since 2019.
If you were pinning a certificate fingerprint, this will no longer work.
Sometimes thunderbird gets confused and needs to be restarted!
Connecting via the onion address? Consider changing your configuration to use the non-TLS ports (port 143 for IMAP, port 110 for POP3, port 25 for SMTP) without connection security. When using onion addresses, your connection is already secure.

What was originally just a Seattle gateway disruption, turned out to also be a problem with a few different gateways. The issues have been resolved, and we are seeing normal connections now.

The Seattle gateway for RiseupVPN is experiencing some issues. You will be automatically redirected to a different gateway if you try to connect to this gateway, but it may be a less optimal one. We will update this issue as we know more.

Upstream has removed their incorrect route, and re-established their BGP session with us, enabling us to properly announce the routes, and resolve this issue.

We have been in contact with upstream about the issues. It appears they are announcing a route for one of our networks, when they should not. They are investigating and will get back to us.

Due to networking issues upstream, one of our netblocks is currently unavailable. We are working with them to return service to normal, and hope to have things resolved soon.
