Oh look, the blindfold replacement opened for business today! I don't know if I remember how to do this. :D

The Beggar's Banquet: Round Opens August 2nd

(Why do I feel my prompts are the most obvious in the world? I have kink needs, people!)

We started playing with our new captioning software at work last week for about an hour a day. OMG, it sucks so bad. Lots of bugs, can't do half the stuff our old (old!) software does. So frustrating. And now my boss wants me to QC and feedback a new guy's work on it. Hello, I still have to push about five different buttons before I find the one that does what I want it to do! Now add someone watching me who I'm supposed to teach?! WTF, talk about setting someone up to fail...

So combined with the above, my car and condo insurance company is giving me the runaround. How can they raise my rates 20% when I haven't changed a single thing on my policies? Farggin' moneygrubbers. Anyone have a good insurance company they'd recommend?

And then to top it all off, my neighbors disconnected the outdoor safety light between our two condos and then stopped the property management company from fixing it. Now I'm going to have to get the HOA involved. Farggin' bastiges.

Last week felt like one battle after another.

In good news, I've found a goodreads group I really like. They have nice challenges and are really easy-going and friendly. Now if I can just get them to transplant to all the genres I like to read. :D Also I bought this as a cheer-me-up present. Hope it's as pretty as it seems. Otherwise not much is going on with me. I"m still reading and lurking, but don't have much to say.

Why is LJ redesigning things instead of fixing what's broken? Constantly loading pages, I'm looking at you.

Anyone want to see my Grand Canyon, &/or California condor pics? Spoiler: there's a big ditch.

I have a new postman and he won't deliver packages. It's very very annoying. I was home, goddamnit.

Have a meme. )

Can I tell you a work story? There's this guy at work whose job it is to deliver our files. This means exporting certain file types and emailing or ftping them. He screws up CONSTANTLY-- forgets to delete certain information that screws up his exports, doesn't do the final checks that we're all supposed to do for markup characters. Just generally does a super sloppy, lazy job. So instead of, you know, making him do his job correctly, now the managers want us to do these checks for him, just because he never fucking does them. Yes, they have been dumped onto the rest of of the staff because he ALWAYS FORGETS TO DO THEM, instead of management fixing the damn problem. So basically all the rest of us now have more work to do and the slacker has less work to do. All the while they're counting the minutes of how long each project takes us.

Work is chugging along. We are finally almost done with the anime project with the insane deadlines. They were so impressed with our work that they kept giving us more and more series and extending the project longer and longer. It was kinda fun and interesting to get to talk to my coworkers about anime-- and I had to giggle a little at hearing one 20-something girl trying to explain what "yaoi" is to a 60-something male boss. Currently we just started captioning a couple seasons of the Dick van Dyke show. Not something I've ever watched before, but it's kind of amusing-- Rob and Laura in separate twin beds, bowling alleys, sitting down to dinner!

Awhile back Pondy mentioned she was reading a/b/o fics in passing, and of course I had to chime in about my favorites. So have some J2 a/b/o recs. )

Going to Arizona next week to celebrate my dad's 75th birthday. He wanted a family vacation to the Grand Canyon, so we're staying in cabins on the south rim for a couple days and will be touring around. First time I'll see my sister in a few years so that will be nice. I wonder how Cards against Humanity would go over for a family game night? *^_^*

I think my jaw dropped a little at this guy's decor. Wow. I'd love love love to tour all the art, but I'm not sure I could live among it. I think my favorites are the Greek plates and images.

And since I'm closing tabs: Photos from the past Man, just looking at #12 creeps me out! And #24. Ugh. Also you might want to stop before #38. Just saying.
stormcloude: pulp (shady lady)
(today only?) Free historical m/m book, Mark of the Gladiator. Amazon only, but Calibre can help you out with that. ;)

Also Pondy asked for a/b/o knotting recs and I'm working on that! If anyone has any they'd highly recommend then feel free to comment. Also if anyone has a link to that one where Jensen has to knot a "prisoner" Jared in front of the whole pack at JDM's behest I've been looking for it and can't find it! I love that one!

Hi again.

I am trying to get in the habit of posting more often, because I miss conversing with my flist.

I'm not sure what was up, but my power went out suddenly for several hours last night. It was actually out in a swathe of my city due to "equipment failures". I was on the phone with my sister at the time and she wouldn't believe me that it was sniper terrorists. All was fine except for two things: none of my matches wanted to strike (they're very old) so lighting candles was a bit of a challenge, and once the power came back on my computer didn't want to start up. I'll admit I hyperventilated about the second one for a wee bit, but then the computer ran some sort of diagnostic (~20m) and let me system restore it although there were no restore points saved and then it finally booted. So that was a relief.

I want to close some tabs on my computer too, so have some full monty. (Do I need to add a "nsfw" warning after that?) This is a cute little German short called Hysteria. I think it is an ad for denim, but I'm not sure. (It auto-starts so don't be startled by it like I was. *^_^*)

I keep seeing people raving about True Detective. I was almost sucked in, but then I saw it stars Matthew McConaghey and Woody Harrelson. Probably my two least favorite actors on the planet. (No, I take that back. That award goes to Will Ferrell.) But I also want to give Three Musketeers a try. Plus GoT and Orphan Black are coming back next month, and I love me some Tatiana Maslany. Although, there is some new guy showing up in the Sarah gifs on tumblr and I don't like that. Where's Paul? I liked Paul.

Anyway, I have no idea what it's about, but it sure is pretty.

Work is becoming so dreary, it's not even funny. We have a new high mucky-muck who wants to change everything and make us a "huge multi-million dollar department." But not only that, he keeps denigrating us and tearing us down to defend his changes. Our offices are "miserable" so we need new paint and posters. Our software is "boring" so we need something shiny he can sell to clients, even our name isn't good enough for him. He even threw the word "metrics" at us. I'll admit we need new software and our offices are horrible, but he really doesn't have to keep telling us over and over. I mean it's not like we don't know this and haven't been making the best of it for YEARS. How about instead of tearing us down all the time, you tell us something we do well, huh? Something that you don't want to rip out and change? Also he's all about appearances and "status". Sorry, dude, you earn my respect. I don't give it just because of your job title. He's really kind of an oily snake salesman, though he puts on a good front. It makes me want to weep a little. I miss my small boutique business that actually cared about quality and not how many files we can churn out at breakneck speed with a giant fake smile on our faces. Not sure if I'll last much longer.

A friend of mine took a visit to England recently and mentioned her visit to a Chained Library. I've never even heard of these things before, but now I want to see one.
stormcloude: mrow! (blackcat)
Yea gods, this week has been rough. I think I put in two extra days' work just in overtime. Plus we had a departmental meeting to tell us that our immediate boss is being forced out changing departments. Also they hired this new guy who is an absolute jerk who sits right next to me. Ugh. At least he leaves after a couple of hours so I don't have to deal with him for my entire shift, but he makes my passive-aggressive side come out. So far I have managed to squash it.

I had to make a side trip to Portos today to fortify myself from all this stress. (Also hmmm, they have one in Downey now? That is not as far as I have been known to go for dim sum.)

Has Yaoicon announced their guests yet?

Anyway, have some sort of French dance competition, which is technically worksafe...

Does anyone on my flist watch Shameless? The gifs on my tumblr make it look interesting, but is it a sitcom or a drama?

Also I want to get my dad an Italian gift basket for his upcoming birthday. Anyone have any experience with igourmet?
stormcloude: giraffraffraffe (I <3 broccoli)
It figures that I haven't posted in months and then when I do, it's to pimp a Wincest/J2 fic meme to everyone...

Sorry for the radio silence. Have had not-so-fun fun things going on in my life lately, like lots of OT at work, a cold from hell over Christmas, something made out of concrete on the freeway that jumped up and smacked my car, more OT at work, and so on. One pretty fun thing though is that we're captioning anime and I've gotten to work on Trigun this past week. I like it a lot more than I thought I would. Vash is a doll. I'll have to hunt it down to see all the episodes I missed. Oh, and I took my first yoga class this week. Got a great deal so I thought I'd give it a try. My knees weren't too happy with me, but I figure I can stick it out for 10 classes.

Oh, and I hear some TV show about those two underwear models who wear lots of plaid got picked up for another season. LOL.
stormcloude: giraffraffraffe (I <3 broccoli)
A couple weeks ago my download source got TOS'd. I was very sad because it had been very reliable and one of the few places that still offered avi files. I thought I found a replacement, but I just looked at the files and they're possibly subtitled in French and password protected (which isn't a bad thing) where you have to jump through all these online survey hoops to get the password (which is a bad thing). So I deleted the dozen files I got from this source. At this point I went back to my old source, hoping it had magically resurrected itself from the dead. It hadn't. So I googled it and found its (third) new home. I am a happy little pie rat again.

The above is to preface the fact that I have heard that Dracula is full of gothicy horror goodness. Not sure if it will live up to Sleepy Hollow, but I might give it a try. ETA: Okay, I watched and... I think I finally have to admit that I'm not a vampire fan-- the whole eroticizing blood is not my thing. Still adoring Sleepy Hollow though. If anyone sees any SPN/SH crossovers, send them my way. Or Sleepy Hollow tumblrs.

Kind of irked that Amazon upped their requirement to get free shipping to $35 right before the holidays. And then today I read that Sony is pulling out of the US ereader market. (I actually read more on my phone lately tbh, but I still love my sony ereaders.) Ah well, times are a-changin'.

Oh, I've got a couple of graze.com invites, if anyone is interested.

Hey, you guys all saw the Wonder Woman short film that went around recently, right? I didn't really see people talking about it on livejournal at all. *gimme hands*

I need someone to come make me all the pumpkin desserts.
stormcloude: tragically heroic or heroically tragic? (BF Ash)
I had this really ranty thing written up last week about work and how I had to stay late a couple nights for lots of OT because of other people's screw-ups, but this week has been a good week so I'm not posting it. Just let it go into the ether.

I'm really digging Sleepy Hollow. It's got this Gothic horror vibe that the early days of Supernatural used to have-- lots of spooky atmosphere and gorgeous cinematography, interesting folklore, family issues, deft touches of comedy that don't ruin the flow of the story. Heck, you could imagine the younger Winchesters digging up graves in the next town over. I think this is a show I'll follow this year.

I also checked out the first eps of Hostages and Ironside, both of which have these arrogant alpha-male leads that I can't stand. So I won't be keeping up with those.

Have an SPN music video:

I'll be looking for all y'all's reactions next week to help me decide if I'm getting sucked back in or not. On the one hand, Winchesters! \o/ On the other... angels. /o\

I keep waiting for Nike running shoes to go on sale, but the ones I want never do. I like Nikes because I never have to break them in, they fit me perfectly right out of the box, but they're running about $30 more than I want to spend. I finally broke down and ordered another brand that supposedly has "springs" in the soles. Hopefully they'll be as cushy as the Nike Airs. They've got pretty good reviews, and if not, well, I didn't break the bank for them.

I was excited to find that a manga blogger wrote a really good review of Banana Fish a few weeks ago. It's awesome that people are still discovering it. Tumblr reminded me how much I love this series last month. I may have to do a reread soon. There was also this roundtable discussion on the whole series that I got sucked into and spent a good week or so reading. I've linked to the last part, but the other parts are linked in the text before it gets spoilery for the ending, for anyone who might want to relive it. I don't know if I agree with everything in the discussion. Most of the participants came at it from a really "Western media" point of view, but there was still some interesting discussion. It also has summaries in the comments of the side stories that were never translated. Worth a click just to learn how Blanca and Ash first met.

Decided to try out a couple of subscription services that someone mentioned on my flist. First up is Birchbox, which is makeup and beauty supplies. I figure I'll give it a three-month trial run, but I'm already not too impressed with the first box. I don't really wear nail polish and when I do, it's usually neutrals or cool colors. What do they send me? Bright orange metallic. Yeah, never gonna wear that. The other one I'm trying is Graze. It's by invite only atm and I have a feeling that was a big part of the appeal for me, but we'll see after I get the first box. Yay mail!

Well, that was a whole lot of me me me. How you all doin'?

I thought I'd link to some of the fan art posted over on tumblr, because I know some people here don't visit there and it never seems to be brought over to LJ.

Gag reel chibis. (G rated) All together now, awwwww!

Wincest Angst. (PG-13) I don't know if it's the boldly defined muscles or the dramatic coloring I like best about this.

Badbastion. (nc17) Need I say more? Okay, bottom!Sam. ;)

Sam Winchester’s Journal. (pg) I think this from the end of Season 8? This kind of takes my breath away a little. The limited color palatte, the slight smear to it, the emotion really bleeds through. (Part 2)

Photomanip. (PG13) I'm usually not a fan of headless torsos, but this one packs a lot of character in.

Even the gifsets are awesome. (G) Weecest.

There's also the new comm [profile] spn_colorme which is word search games and line art you can practice on and color yourself.

It was 20 years ago today, Sergeant Pepper taught the band to play...
Wait, wrong birthday.

Happy Birthday Wincesters.

Eight years ago today, the pilot first aired. So I will maybe try to post for eight days about it. Or maybe five, since that's about when I stopped watching.

To kick things off:
This is apparently the first Wincest fic ever posted.
This was one of the first fics I recced.
*snickersnort* *gigglechoke*
Oh man, remember color bars for your profile?
I think this is the fic that made me fall in love.
Year One was the era of Stanford fics.

In looking for these old recs, I realized that I actually used to feel guilty about reccing incest and I would warn profusely. Bwahahaha!

I keep thinking I should write something about work, then I realize that I don't really want to think about work when I'm not there. One good thing: I didn't have to do OT this weekend. One bad thing: We've got a new boss who doesn't know much about captioning. He's all about "localizing" and scripting services. Urgh.

Some awesome Wincest gifs for your fandom inspiration.

For Sale or Rent By Owner, a five-times fic by [personal profile] deirdre_c for [profile] salt_burn_porn that really needs to be greatly expanded on in the future. I'm just saying...

An interesting write-up of a M4M strip club outing for all your *ahem* fic researching needs. I don't know, didn't sound very sexy to me. Then again the ones for women don't really appeal to me either. Guess I like the fantasy more than the reality.

And now for something not-so-completely different:

I have been debating going to the local Greek Festival this weekend. One the one hand, yummy Greek foods. On the other, crowds and heat.

So I know I'm a slow learner and all, but I have finally twigged to the fact that I shouldn't buy beauty products from Amazon. I mean they're cheaper and all, but I'm pretty sure that three of the last four things I've bought from there have been counterfeit. Unsealed, missing ingredients sticker and things like that. *sigh* This time I finally filed a complaint to get my money back though. I just find it so annoying.

(I think they might especially need artists from the way this seems to be set up!)

Josh Lanyon finally has a new book out? Hmm.
stormcloude: tousled (upswept)
As promised, a more thorough update on life things.

First my work. I kind of really dislike the night supervisor I have to work with. He gets flustered so fricking easy and bitches at people about how busy he is with his own work when they come to him with a problem THAT IT'S HIS JOB TO FIX. Ugh, I don't hate people, at least I try not to, but he comes pretty close. I've already complained to my department head about him once, a couple months ago, and things got a little better, but now they're getting worse again. He's of the business school of "shut up and just do what I tell you, don't ask me questions, I don't care if it's wrong, you should just be happy you're getting paid." And I hate that so much.

Anyway, we've been captioning the TV show Get Out Alive, and for a reality show, it's actually pretty interesting. It's wilderness survival stuff and man, I would never survive. *^_^* I almost gagged watching them eat wood grubs. Ewww. Also we captioned a movie called Europa Report and it's been weird seeing people I follow on Tumblr and Twitter talking about it.

Also we have a big project coming in over Labor Day weekend and they've already asked us all to "volunteer" to work overtime. Ugh.

My dad is having gall bladder issues now, but doesn't want to have surgery unless it gets much worse. The main treatment he's following is to stop eating spicy foods, which is almost all he eats because most of his taste and smell were lost to his chemo. I don't blame him for not wanting the surgery (he's on blood thinners for his heart) but at the same time it worries me that he'll wait till it's an emergency.

I've only read a couple of big bangs this year. I don't know why, but my reading has really slacked off this year. I'll start something and then lose interest and not finish it. (This applies to regular books too.) On the other hand I am slowly being converted to tumblr. I love all the fan art posted there and how easy it is to reblog it. It does seem like a bit of an echo chamber with the same things showing up on my dash over and over. I wish there was a way to remove the duplicates posts from my timeline, but oh well. It's rekindled my love for Banana fish a little bit too-- I found someone over there who regularly posts about it.

Have some pretty Golden Gate photos. I love the bay area.

I am really REALLY tempted to buy this print, but I'm not sure if it's too fannish to put up on my walls. What do you guys think?
stormcloude: mrow! (blackcat)
Hey, guys, some lots of Iams and Eukanuba pet food are being recalled for possible salmonella contamination. Lots of different products, but only a few sell-by dates. Check here: http://t.co/SCaA97kitq

Real update to come later.

Sounds like Friday would be the day to go to Comic Con this year-- both Orphan Black and Haven are having panels. I may have to find a live feed of those somewhere.

So not many will get this, but I drove back and forth through Yarnell last month to visit my dad in Prescott. Sad days.

I am running out of things to have polls about.

This is both scary and creepy. Talk about Big Brother.

I miss my Brother Lovers show. (100% worth it just for the Lucifer pic. Though I kinda tuned out when Yogurt Man showed up-- just like in the real show!)

Do I wanna make a Trader Joe's run or read big bangs? Decisions, decisions.

OH HAI THERE, MEME THAT I DIDN'T KNOW HOW MUCH I NEEDED IN MY LIFE UNTIL NOW!

Things I am looking forward to this weekend:
- haircut
- reading all the big bangs (okay, this may be a bit ambitious)
- organizing my soaps (obsessions 'r us)
- New sheets on the bed (I may break out the cheap satin ones. Lilac!)
- Cupcakes!
- Chatting with my daddy. (Don't forget present!)

Josh Lanyon put some of his novellas on sale this weekend for 99 cents here.

Dei's running another comment fic meme! SPACE! Yaye!

Work has been kind of tedious this week, although today I have a pretentious snooty cooking show to look forward to. I foresee lots of French foodie research. Whee.
