Résumé for Thomas Rigby

About me

I'm a technologist who thinks in systems. I have been making things for the web professionally for more than 14 years. I'm passionate about delivering exceptional user experiences through creative implementation of code, with a particular focus on inclusivity.

I also shoot film photography which has taught me constraints often lead to better outcomes than infinite options. A philosophy I apply to technical architecture. I am an enthusiastic code janitor and a proud 1x engineer. I much prefer deleting code to writing it — if you know, you know.

I am currently a creative technologist at Havas Lynx CX but I haven't always been.

My background is deliberately eclectic. I consider myself a bricoleur and an autodidact with a broad T-shape; a wide range of generalist skills with a deep-dive into frontend development.

I wound up in technology via code development, photography, and graphic design. I have been a chef, dealt with account enquiries for a global bank, and helped folks in need receive benefits. I have worked for small family businesses and global multi-national corporations. All of this helps me communicate empathetically with a variety of stakeholders.

I'm a flexible, approachable team player who's delivery-focused, dependable, and above all pragmatic. I advocate for data-driven iterative development, maximising reach and impact weighted against cost and effort. I thrive in collaborative, process-driven working environments with like-minded individuals.

Beliefs

I firmly believe the internet is for everyone and that accessibility should be a baseline not a target which means I am vocal and I am passionate about sustainability, inclusivity, and ethics.

I believe that “beautiful websites” and “accessible websites” are not mutually exclusive.

I believe it is possible to market goods and services to people in an ethical way that doesn't infringe their right to privacy. It isn't easy but it's possible.

The only bug-free code is the code you don't write.

There cannot be technology-only solutions to social problems.

Technical Writing & Community Engagement

I maintain an active technical blog at thomasrigby.com with over 200 articles covering web development, accessibility, and ethical technology.

Recent topics include: Eleventy optimisation, React state management, semantic HTML patterns, progressive enhancement, and web sustainability.

I am active in the IndieWeb and personal publishing communities because I don't want the internet to be five websites owned by four white guys.

I have given talks on "Artificial Intelligence", "Customer Experience", "Web Development", "Sandwiches", and "Business Analysis".
