In my file Putnam Strategy.txt, I suggest asking for a brightly sunlit room. As well as a lot of room between students and adequate table space. For me, these things matter. I know some mathematicians who disliked competitions in decent part because of the sensory constraints and hatred for the timer pressure. Food can be annoying. Well OK. It all adds up, including plausibly very mild relative hypoxia. I performed OK in Boston in 2025 [and 2014 I suppose] despite suboptimal conditions. Nowadays I would think there is a recent AOPS thread on caffeine and my take is that serious competitors might want to eat a solid bit of food including carbohydrates beforehand [as has been standard interview textbook advice for some time now] but ensure to brush their teeth. I still basically think coffee before the first half of the Putnam and perhaps beef steak with white rice before the second is alright.
