Olamide’s journey didn’t begin with a laptop or a clear-cut roadmap. Instead, it started with an eagerness to solve problems, from fixing electronics at home to helping people around him figure out digital tools even when he didn’t own any.

A cousin’s mention of software engineering sparked something deeper. From there, curiosity took over. Though he initially leaned toward Computer Engineering, Olamide eventually switched to Computer Science, seeking a path that blended creativity with logic while avoiding the physics-heavy roadblocks.

“People say, ‘Oh, you studied Computer Science, no wonder you’re a developer.’ But I tell them that’s not why I’m in tech. My passion for solving problems is what made me excel in school, not the other way around.”

Building From the Ground Up

Olamide’s first taste of hands-on experience came through internships and small projects for family and friends, often unpaid, but always rich in lessons.

Unlike many of his peers who focused on getting paid during their industrial training, Olamide saw it as a choice between learning or earning. He chose learning. That decision opened doors. One internship led to gigs, then collaborations, then full-time offers. And in just a month after graduating, he landed his first official tech role.

“Your first opportunity is often a door. It may look small, but it opens you up to everything else.”

What Drives Him Today

Olamide now leads the frontend engineering team at Prospa, where he’s not just shipping code, he’s helping shape solutions that speak to real business owners’ needs.

From staying behind on campus to study extra material to helping aspiring data analysts land roles across industries, Mariam Adeoti’s journey into tech is a story of intention, visibility, and soft-life wins.

Today, Mariam is a thriving data analyst, YouTuber, and mentor on platforms like Veet. But her path didn’t begin in tech. It started with numbers and an unwavering drive to figure things out.

From Economics to Ecosystems: A New Path Emerges

Mariam’s love for numbers began early. It led her to study Economics at university, where she was known as a bookworm; the kind who stayed back during semester breaks to get ahead of the curriculum. She even asked senior colleagues for course outlines before classes began.

But in her third year, something shifted.

After hearing from older students that no matter how hard she studied, lecturers often held back top grades, she stopped chasing perfection and started chasing meaning. She began volunteering more, building a richer experience outside the classroom.

That decision eventually led her to the FATE Foundation after graduation, where she joined the Research and Policy team. One of her first tasks was mapping players in Nigeria’s entrepreneurship ecosystem. It seemed simple until she realized how hard it was to find clean, reliable data. Websites were broken or outdated, and manually sorting information became frustrating. She thought the problem was her approach.

But really, the solution was data analytics.

“That search led me to discover data analytics… I realized I already loved statistics. This was just a natural next step.”

The Lagos Leap and Finding Her Lane in Data

Around the same time, Mariam moved to Lagos, a sharp contrast to the quiet town life she had always known. The noise, the traffic, the pace, it was overwhelming. But discovering that data analysis could be done remotely, using her love for numbers, gave her clarity.

The COVID lockdowns offered uninterrupted time to study. She told her manager at FATE Foundation about her interest, and soon, any data-adjacent task found its way to her desk. Though there wasn’t a formal data department then, she was eventually given the title of Data Analyst. And just like that, she had carved a niche for herself in the organization.

That was her official start. But it was only the beginning.

Three Years In: From Analyst to Educator and Mentor

Mariam has now worked in tech for over three years, with her first formal data analyst title earned in the non-profit sector. Her transition into a proper startup environment came in 2022 and with it, new challenges, deeper learning curves, and greater impact.

One of the proudest aspects of her journey isn’t the job title or the pay. It’s the ripple effect of her work.

“Tech changed my life,” she says.

“But what I’m most proud of is helping others break into the data space.”

Through mentoring, educational content, and personal storytelling on platforms like YouTube, she’s watched her influence grow. People reach out with messages saying they landed a role after following her advice. That, she admits, is her quiet win.

On Mentorship: “Don’t Learn Everything at Once”

“Pick one tool — Excel, Python, anything and go deep. Build projects with it. Then grow from there.”

She also encourages visibility. Instead of building beautiful dashboards or analyses and keeping them buried in your laptop, she believes in sharing your work publicly. Visibility, she says, opens doors.

For Mariam, no project is without its own hurdles. But her approach is grounded: reach out to her network, Google relentlessly, and, in recent times, turn to ChatGPT. Sometimes, she asks it to explain technical concepts using movie characters because why not make learning fun?

Soft Babe Energy and Life Outside Tech

Outside work, Mariam describes herself as a soft babe and proudly so. She travels often, exploring co-working spaces and soaking in new experiences. But her love for community hasn’t faded.

She still volunteers, especially with non-profits, and often helps organizations structure internal systems or run programs around vocational skills. It’s something she began during her university years and continues today, even if she doesn’t always share it online.

Therapy, too, has played a major role in her personal growth.

“If you haven’t interacted with me in the past three years, you probably don’t know me anymore.”

From how she dresses to how she shows up, Mariam credits therapy for giving her confidence, clarity, and a deeper awareness of her purpose. To her, tech isn’t just about code and tools, it’s about creating meaningful impact.

Benjamin’s foray into product design began in 2020, right in the middle of the global pandemic. With the world paused, he stumbled upon product design, and something clicked. He started with free online courses, then later enrolled in a design boot camp at Creative Ferry, where he finally began building solid foundations in UX and UI.

A pivotal moment came when he posted a design in an online community. The feedback wasn’t flattering, but it was honest. And more importantly, it attracted the attention of a boot camp founder who saw potential in him. That moment shifted everything. What began as experimentation soon became purpose. What started as self-doubt became direction.

Since then, he has worked across EdTech, NGOs, logistics, and financial services. Today, he designs experiences at a financial institution and mentors upcoming designers through the Veet platform.

The Minds That Moulded Him

Benjamin’s mentors aren’t just people in his field; they’re people who’ve shaped his philosophy.

• Idorenyen (Idy) Enang, founder of Corporate Shepherds, is one such figure. “He’s a well of wisdom,” Benjamin says. “Even when he’s joking, there’s something to take away.” Idy’s career in multiple industries and leadership insights helped Benjamin rethink what success truly means.

• In tech, Oluwadamilola Soyombo lit the first spark. “She made UX/UI feel achievable for me,” he recalls. Her clarity during a webinar became the launchpad for his confidence.

• And then there’s Tobi Amodu, a designer who consistently made time to offer feedback even when others ignored cold DMs. “He gave me validation when I needed it most,” Benjamin says. “That kind of presence goes a long way.”

The Project That Left a Mark

One of the most defining experiences in Benjamin’s career came while volunteering with Isé Africa, an EdTech startup.

With no prior EdTech background, he volunteered to challenge himself and ended up designing the homepage, course dashboard, and talent acquisition flow. “It wasn’t just about having polished Figma files,” he says. “The real win was seeing people use what I designed. That was unforgettable.”

Habits That Lead to Impact

Benjamin approaches every project and every mentorship session with intention.

“I never jump into a project blindly,” he says. “Discovery calls are non-negotiable. I need to know the goals, users, and what success actually means.”

For mentorship, he leads with one powerful question:

“Why are you here?”

Because without clarity, even the best advice can fall flat.

His workspace reflects the same mindset. It’s filled with books, notepads, and quiet reminders to stay curious. “Once you stop learning, you start fading,” he says.

“I’d travel,” he says immediately. “Experience new places. Then maybe explore real estate, it’s a quiet passion of mine.”

“They hadn’t even assigned the task formally, but I sketched a solution anyway. That was the turning point for me.”

Take, for instance, the time he manually designed over 100 screens without using Figma components. A small change in structure forced him to update each screen individually, a gruelling experience that could have been avoided with proper design systems.

David sat in front of his laptop, staring at a job listing for a Software Engineer at a Lagos-based fintech startup. He had all the skills they were asking for: Python, React, cloud computing, but still, something held him back.

• The learning curve is steep – Many Nigerian developers, designers, and data analysts are switching to tech from unrelated fields. It’s easy to feel like everyone else knows more than you do.

• Job competition is fierce – With remote work opportunities and the rise of international hiring, you’re no longer competing just with people in Lagos or Abuja, but with professionals worldwide.

• Tech has no “arrival point” – Unlike some careers where experience directly translates to seniority, tech careers constantly require learning. Even senior engineers sometimes feel outdated when new frameworks emerge.

Even the CEO of GitHub, Thomas Dohmke, once struggled with imposter syndrome. Before leading one of the world’s biggest tech platforms, he felt like an outsider transitioning from being a software engineer to an executive.

He doubted whether he was the right person to lead such a massive developer community. But through mentorship from other tech leaders, he learned that leadership isn’t about knowing everything; it’s about building the right teams and continuously learning.

In the fast-evolving world of digital design, mentors like Alfa Zihal stand out, not just for their skill, but for their heart, vision, and willingness to give back. A self-taught designer who carved his path during the pandemic, Zahil is now a Senior UI/UX Designer and an active mentor in the Veet community, where he helps designers find clarity, purpose, and structure in their craft.

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Zahil to learn more about his journey, his mindset, and what it truly takes to grow as a designer.

From Congo to Kigali to Design

Zahil’s journey began in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a French-speaking country. He later moved to Kigali for his university studies. While many discovered banana bread during the 2020 lockdown, Zahil discovered UI/UX design. With time on his hands and curiosity in his heart, he taught himself design skills that would soon shape his future.

By the time he graduated in 2021, he was already working with startups across EdTech, FinTech, and HR. In 2023, he made another big leap. He relocated and stepped into a senior role.

Taking Risks That Paid Off

Zahil isn’t new to tough calls. He recalled a project where the manager lacked experience, so he took charge of everything from planning and research to execution and delivery. It was a bold move, but it paid off.

“I ended up planning and executing everything—from research to delivery. It was risky, but the success of the project showed me what I was capable of.”

Another high-stakes moment was leading a remote design team in London. The responsibility was heavy, but so was the reward. The project was a success, and Zahil earned recognition for his leadership and execution.

Bad Habits, Big Lessons

One of the hardest habits Zahil had to unlearn was poor communication. As a junior designer, he often worked in isolation, without syncing with his team or gathering user feedback.

“I used to design without involving the team or collecting user feedback. Over time, I realized design is a collaborative process, not a solo mission.”

He credits communities and mentorship for helping him overcome this challenge and improve his communication skills.

Design Regrets and Cringe-Worthy Projects

Ask any creative, and they’ll admit to a few “what was I thinking?” moments. For Zahil, there were two projects that didn’t make the cut as he progressed in his career.

“I eventually removed them from my portfolio. They didn’t meet the standards I now uphold.”

Growth means letting go of your old work, especially the kind that makes you cringe.

Burnout, Motivation, and Mindset

Even with experience, design can be exhausting. “Just yesterday,” Zahil admitted, “I felt like giving up.” A frustrating project reversal had him questioning everything. But instead of quitting, he chose a constructive conversation.

“I reminded myself of where I started and the vision I carry. That’s what kept me from walking away.”

So what keeps him going?

“The success or failure of a project reflects on me. That responsibility drives me to always do better.”

Hot Takes: AI, Feedback, and Cracking Under Pressure

While Zahil doesn’t hold extremely controversial opinions, he’s clear on one thing:

“We shouldn’t fear AI instead we should learn how to use it. The people who adapt will lead this industry.”

And when it comes to honest reflections, Zahil’s not afraid to play:

Zahil’s advice to anyone stepping into design or joining his mentorship sessions is simple but powerful:

“Don’t design for money. Design for impact and user satisfaction.”

The tech world is full of trends, but some people stand out because they keep things simple and focused. One of those people is Chidinma Ukaegbu, a Product Designer who loves solving real problems in creative and practical ways.

How Chidinma got Into tech

Chidinma shared that she started her tech journey during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Before then, she worked in the engineering department of an oil and gas company.

But tech had always interested her. It was even connected to what she studied in school. At first, she tried mobile development and later looked into machine learning and artificial intelligence. Eventually, with the help of a mentor who noticed her creativity and eye for detail, she moved into product design.

Passion over trend

When asked if she became a designer just because tech was popular, Chidinma said no. “It’s something I truly love,” she explained. She enjoys helping people and creating simple, clean designs.

One of her first projects was a platform that helped people find skilled artisans. This idea came from her experience when she moved to Lagos and found it hard to locate trusted service providers. Many of her designs are based on real problems she faced herself.

Finding a balance between user needs and business goals

Sometimes in design, what users need and what the business wants can clash. Chidinma said that her job is to bring both sides together. She uses research, user testing, and proof to support her decisions.

When there is a conflict, she tries to find a balance that works for everyone.

Why she keeps her designs simple

Chidinma believes that good design should be simple and helpful. She avoids using too many colours or effects. Instead, she asks herself a few questions before starting any design:

1. Is this useful?

2. Does it look good?

3. Does it support the business?

4. Is it easy for everyone to use?

She also pointed out that product design is different from graphic design. While graphic design can be bold and colourful, product design should be about making things easy to use for the long term.

A funny (but real) challenge

One funny moment she shared was something called “Oga-centred design.” This happens when a boss wants things done their way, no matter what the users need.

To handle this, Chidinma listens, creates the design as requested, and then uses A/B testing to show what works better. Sometimes, especially in side jobs, she just lets them have their way if it won’t cause harm.

Keeping up with trends

Chidinma stays updated by joining design communities, following the right people online, and doing personal research.

Outside of work, she enjoys watching reality TV, reading physical books, spending time with her family (especially watching football), and hanging out with friends. “There’s more to life than work,” she said.

Her advice to aspiring designers

Chidinma had some powerful advice for those who want to get into product design:

Don’t join tech just because it is trending.

Ask yourself:

• Am I ready to think deeply?

• Am I willing to keep learning?

• Do I want to help people?

If you say yes to those questions, then you’re on the right path.

One such story is that of Kenneth Jimmy, a Full-Stack Developer with over five years of experience in software and product engineering. From teaching part-time to writing his first lines of code on a mobile phone, Kenneth’s journey is as inspiring as it is relatable.

The Accidental Programmer

Kenneth’s journey into tech wasn’t planned, it was born out of necessity and curiosity. After high school, he faced two paths: university or learning a trade. His parents nudged him toward mobile phone repairs, but Kenneth had other ideas.

“One day, a skill acquisition program came up at the school where I was teaching. Teachers were allowed to sign up to lead extracurricular activities. I picked computer programming, even though I had no idea what it was about.”

That single decision opened the door to HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. With no laptop in sight, Kenneth started learning and writing code on his phone. What began as a school program turned into a passion, and eventually a career.

Lessons from the Trenches

In his journey through tech and product development, Kenneth has gathered key lessons that every aspiring developer can learn from:

1. Soft Skills Matter:

“I landed a mid-level role early on, but I struggled with communication. I had good ideas but couldn’t convey them effectively. That misalignment cost me the job. Now I know being good technically isn’t enough.”

2. Always Be Honest:

“I once added a skill to my CV that I wasn’t confident about. During the interview, they asked about it and I blanked out. It was embarrassing, but it taught me the value of honesty.”

3. Take the Leap:

“I’ve tried starting companies that didn’t take off. But each failure taught me something. Entrepreneurship is a risk worth taking.”

Having navigated the tech world alone for so long, Kenneth is deeply passionate about mentorship.

“I didn’t have a mentor. I lost opportunities just because I didn’t know how to negotiate or present myself. I don’t want others to go through that. That’s why I mentor now.”

Advice for Aspiring Engineers

Kenneth believes that success in tech goes beyond technical skills. Here are his top recommendations:

• Stay humble: Listen and learn even if you already think you know.

• Be user-focused: Code is easy. Solving user problems is hard.

• Market yourself: Build your network, showcase your skills.

• Use the right tools: JIRA, ClickUp, Figma, learn tools that help you build complete products.

He also encourages engineers to build something from scratch: “That’s the best way to understand the process end-to-end.”

Outside work, Kenneth finds inspiration in religion, chess, and football. He also keeps procrastination at bay by using notes and reminders to stay organized.

Veet is a community-driven mentorship platform dedicated to helping tech professionals achieve their career goals. How it all began

It all started on a Sunday evening when I and my co-founder realized that the tech ecosystem was growing really fast in Africa and the world at large. And most of these people who transition into tech come from different backgrounds and don't know the right direction to succeed. For some, they don’t even know where to start.

Join our community

We started the Veet to solve our problems. Growing up, neither of us had a mentor, and always had to do things alone. Most of the time we make mistakes and sometimes those mistakes are costly and irreversible.

Despite this, we always feel the need to help people even when we are not at our best.

Then the idea came to us to work on a platform whereby people can learn, collaborate, and accelerate their learning and development in their career path.

A place where people instill confidence, feel inspired, share meaningful stories, and get access to a network of experts and resources.

That’s how Veet was born. A community-driven mentorship platform where people can find, book, and meet mentors around the world.

We started building in 2022. Along the way, we reached out to Ken to join us as our Co-founder and Backend Engineer. And in no time we built our waitlist with over 360+ people from different countries on our waitlist.

In February 2023, after months of work, we officially launched our beta version to the public.

Why we are building Veet?

With Veet, we aim to:

• Provide a supportive community.

• Help our juniors get hired.

Achievements accomplished so far:

We currently have 269+ mentors from over 5 countries with 30 mentorship sessions completed and counting. it's still day one for us.

It has taken a lot of work to build and scale Veet and we’re glad we have finally launched.
