Eligible farmers and contractors in England can now upgrade their grain monitoring and sampling technology with substantial government backing under the ‘Productivity’ theme.

Starting 17 March 2026, farmers in England can apply for a grant of up to 40% towards the purchase of a CROVER System through the Farming Equipment and Technology Fund (FETF).

The FETF 2026 Grant: What You Need to Know

According to the recently published DEFRA Farming Blog guidance , this initiative is designed to boost efficiency and sustainability.

The scheme offers three grants, each ranging from £1,000 to £25,000, to assist English farmers, horticulturalists, and forestry owners in acquiring new equipment or technology.

The CROVER Basic and CROVER Pro fall under the ‘Improve Productivity’ theme of the FETF.

The Eligibility Checklist: How CROVER Qualifies

The government has published strict technical rules on the FETF Productivity Items and Specifications page .

☑️ Must provide real-time sub-surface monitoring of the stored crop

CROVER operates as an omnidirectional system. It traverses directly on and within your grain bulk, providing a clear live camera feed straight to the CROVER Local Control App.

☑️ Must monitor temperature, moisture, and carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels sub-surface

Using its dedicated Sensing Module, the system accurately monitors and logs grain temperature, moisture, and CO₂ levels directly to the CROVER Local Control App.

☑️ Must freely traverse stored grain while taking sub-surface samples. Permanently mounted systems which use fixed monitoring points are not eligible

The robot freely navigates the grain using its specialized pontoon wheels and utilizes an integrated Sampling Module capable of safely retrieving physical grain samples.

☑️ Systems which do not take sub surface samples not eligible

The CROVER Pro package comes with both monitoring and sampling modules, adding the ability to collect physical samples at depth, up to 12 litres.

Meet the Deadline: Applications strictly close at Midday on 28 April 2026 .

Testing the CROVER in Italy with agROBOfood...

At the beginning of the year, we were busy packing for an expedition as part of Crover’s involvement in the agROBOfood project. A small team from our office left Edinburgh to evaluate the current version of the CROVER system at a number of test sites at several different locations across Italy. The two weeks worth of testing we undertook in Italy were hugely successful for Crover and gave us lots to work with going forward.

The first stop was near Pavia not far from Milan in the north of Italy and a province notable for its rice production. From there, Crover moved east into the region of Veneto - famous for its large-scale production of soy, corn and other grains. Veneto is also known for its storage capacity, reflected in the considerable numbers of different sheds and silos in the area. Some sheds make use of grain levellers intended to keep the grain in order and optimise conditions. Surveying different storage configurations like these is very useful as it will allow us to ensure that the CROVER system can be installed without interrupting existing operations.

Nearing the end of the trip, Crover moved south along the east coast of Italy to the penultimate test site in the region of Molise, known for production of various types of wheat, including the hard durum wheat used in pasta. The final site we visited was located further south near Altamura, where the bread known as Pane di Altamura originates.

The time Crover spent testing in Italy was a great success, demonstrating that the current systems are operating well and that good progress has been made. Over the next few months we will be working hard to implement what we have learned, before our eventual return to Italy for more testing in the summer. Early in March our founder, Lorenzo Conti, spoke to Ditsa Keren in an interview for DeliveryRank, the online food system service reviewer. Lorenzo elaborated on the origins of Crover, the benefits the system offers and what is on the horizon for Crover in 2022.

The physical phenomenon known as the ‘Crover effect’ - which allows for locomotion within granular media - was first discovered by Lorenzo while working towards his PhD. In the interview Lorenzo talks about how Crover is leveraging this discovery to help grain storage operators maintain the quality of their stock. The data provided by the CROVER will enable early detection and treatment of hotspots and infestations, reducing losses as a result.

Lorenzo also touched on Crover’s plans for 2022 and the immediate future. Currently, Crover is aiming for delivery of the first units of the Crover to begin in the summer, coinciding with the harvest cycle. These are exciting times for the company and we are all excited to see the CROVER demonstrate its utility at storage sites across Europe and beyond. 2022 is now upon us. However, before we set our sights on the new year, it is time to take a moment for reflection. In order to take the right path forward, we must first look backwards. 2021 was a defining year for us at Crover. Read on to find out how…

In early 2021, our founder - Lorenzo Conti - spoke to Nassim Ramadan about Crover’s mission and goals in an appearance on BBC News Arabic . In spring, Crover presented at Agri-EPI’s Centre’s annual Innovation Week , where Lorenzo talked about the myriad ways the CROVER system can future-proof the arable sector with its precision and predictive powers. Not long after, Crover appeared at RAI21’s Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Industry Showcase , where we hosted our own virtual booth for attendees to visit.

As the summer rolled around, our fortunes began to grow. In June, Crover was named as one of five finalists in the Food and Drink category for the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Emerging Technology Competition. Not long after, we began our long-anticipated crowdfunding campaign through Crowdcube - with an initial target of £150,000. The success of this campaign - which eventually reached 217% of the original target - was the highlight of our summer and one of the defining moments in the history of Crover. We are grateful to those who chose to back us and ensure the future of the company going forward.

The summer period also saw us visit Cereals 2021 in Lincolnshire - one of Europe’s leading events for arable farming - where we were able to talk face-to-face with farmers at our first physical event for many months. Around this time we also received recognition from Corporate Vision Magazine at their Technology Innovator Awards 2021, who named us the Most Innovative Robotics and Automation Development Company in the UK. In late July, as Crover’s crowdfunding campaign surpassed £200k in funding, Lorenzo spoke alongside Pete Gwilt of Crowdcube about the merits of crowdfunding at an event organised by the Centre for Engineering, Education and Development. Given the success of our own Crowdcube campaign, it seems clear that startups in particular should consider equity crowdfunding as a way to help fund their mission.

This year we have also received valuable support from Unlocking Ambition , who selected us as a finalist in their 2021 #UA3 cohort . They also provided us with a one-to-one mentoring session with Silicon Valley legend and Global Scot, Eric McAfee. As our crowdfunding efforts drew to a close, we received more valuable financial support from the Roddenberry Foundation. The foundation set up in Star Trek creator’s Gene Roddenberry’s name recognised our ambition to boldly go where no man (or robot) has gone before, seeing fit to reward us with a grant from the Catalyst Fund . Towards the end of August, Lorenzo represented Crover at Business Scotland’s first virtual summit ; after which he also spoke to Eric Della Casa of the Green Thru podcast about inefficiencies in the food system and how technology like the CROVER can make a difference in these areas.

The latter part of 2021 saw Crover attend a number of high profile events, the first of which was TEDxUniversityofStrathclyde in October, where Lorenzo was invited as a guest speaker to talk about Crover’s mission and the 'ground-swimming' discovery of the 'Crover Effect'. In November, Crover travelled back to Glasgow for the seminal COP26, where Lorenzo appeared alongside a demonstration CROVER drone on the special COP26 live episode of BBC Click . With many anxious about the future of the planet, all eyes were on Lorenzo as he explained how the CROVER can help reduce waste and increase efficiency. Before COP26, Crover also pitched for the highly competitive Food Tech Challengers 2021 Food Tech Congress . Competing against other impressive innovators in the food and agriculture sectors, we placed as a finalist in the Agri-Tech category.

Our success continued into December, where Crover was the overall global winner of Mitsubishi Chemical Advanced Materials’ High-Temperature 3D Printing Carbon-Fibre Challenge. We are grateful to those who voted for us and to Mitsubishi Chemical Advanced Materials, with whom we look forward to working in the future. The metaphorical cherry on top of our year came when Lorenzo Conti and Gianlorenzo De Santis landed in Paris for Hello Tomorrow’s 2021 Global Summit. It was at this hugely important gathering of today’s innovators and disruptors that Crover won the Food & Agriculture track, in addition to being named the #1 Global Deep-Tech Food and Agri-Tech Startup of the Year. Our success at Hello Tomorrow 2021 , including Lorenzo’s pitch , ensured our year ended on a high note.

Throughout the year there were many other events and places where Crover could be spotted. We would like to thank UK Electronics Ltd , ESA Business Centre UK , Edinburgh Innovations and IOM3 Materials World , who promoted us on their respective social media channels and websites. Also Deep Knowledge Analytics who invited us to speak at their conference - ‘ The Technology Revolution of FoodTech Industry ’ - and Scottish Enterprise, who allowed us to host a virtual booth at ‘Scotland’s Climate Ambition Zone’. Crover also featured on COP26 Daily by the Big Light podcast, in a special episode of the SCOUT Project and in an interview with BNP Paribas on the showfloor at Hello Tomorrow. In addition to the groundbreaking work we do at Crover, our methods and ethos were also recognised when we were named one of Scotland’s most sustainable start-ups .

It was thus that 2021 came to a close. We would like to thank all those who had our back and supported us throughout the year. As a company we have come on leaps and bounds: from the recruitment of many new, talented team members that are propelling us forwards; to the numerous improvements made to the product, each of which bring us closer to its commercial deployment at grain storage sites in the UK, Europe and beyond. 2021 was another great year for Crover and we have emerged from it stronger and more mature than before. We now look forward to the heights we will have to scale in 2022, both with excitement and with anticipation.

Our Journey - from Deep Tech Pioneer to Winning the 'Food and Agriculture' Track

A t Crover, we have had an action-packed time these last couple of months and have not had a chance to explain what we have been up to. From here on that changes - you can look forward to more regular and insightful updates from us. The topic of this article in particular is our trip to the Hello Tomorrow 2021 Global Summit that took place earlier this month in Paris. Read on to find out more about our time at Hello Tomorrow and the many successes that we enjoyed while there.

Long before our founder, Lorenzo Conti, and Gianlorenzo De Santis departed for Paris, the newly-formed Crover Marketing Team - comprising several new and talented employees - were asked to help design the display stand. Thousands of big players would be walking past the Crover stall on the show floor so our display needed something outside the box to draw these attendees in. As well as Crover-branded pin badges and stickers, for the stall we also produced new business cards and bespoke 3D-printed Crover keyrings. In the photographs below, there can be seen our Crover stand at Hello Tomorrow, complete with miniature models of the entire grain storage chain process and lastly, a working Crover prototype sitting a typical grain bulk.

#SavingGrains in Paris

H ello Tomorrow’s 2021 Global Summit gathered hundreds of today’s innovators and disruptors together in one location to share their visions for the future of their respective industries and fields. Crover, a dynamic force and innovator in the field of robotics and agri-tech, was selected from among 4000 global applications to be a finalist at Hello Tomorrow’s 2021 Global Summit. And so it was that our founder, Lorenzo Conti, and Gianlorenzo De Santis found themselves in Paris in early December. Throughout the event, they engaged with event attendees and spoke with countless leading lights in several crucial fields. Many great conversations were had at our Crover stand as Lorenzo and Gianlorenzo spoke about the paths we have chosen to get here and where we are going next.

Crover proved a big hit at Hello Tomorrow 2021. Attendees were eager to hear more about our mission to help reduce post-harvest losses and to enable humanity to reach below the surface. Our stand on the show floor and all of the work that went into it helped us promote Crover to a wider international audience than before. The positive reception for Crover did not stop there however. Our founder, Lorenzo Conti took to the floor of the main stage at Hello Tomorrow to deliver a significant address that touched on Crover’s purpose, its ethos and the achievables we are targeting going forward. Winner of the 'Food and Agriculture' Track

T hanks to the unique and "ground-swimming" nature of our technology, the panel of judges saw fit to name Crover the winner in the ‘Food and Agriculture’ track, sponsored by EIT Food. So too was Crover recognised as the #1 global Deep-Tech food and Agri-Tech startup of the year. These are prestigious accolades that we will take with us as we continue our journey to help grain storage operators reduce their post-harvest losses.

Looking back at our involvement in Hello Tomorrow’s 2021 Global Summit, Crover’s time there proved an enormous success from start to finish and we are grateful to the entire team at Hello Tomorrow for reaching out to us and letting us be a part of the event. It has ensured that we finish the year 2021 on a high note.

Crover Journey Update

Following the success of crowdfunding, we have continued Crover's development and showcased our current progress to some world-leading events.

Earlier this month, amongst 9 other Agri-Tech finalists, we made it to the final stage of the Food Tech Challenger competition. The CROVER has been recognized for its climate-smart technology and ability to improve the grain value chain.

Secondly, we have participated in ‘ Scotland’s Climate Ambition Zone’, a virtual event parallel to COP26. We are honoured to have attended as one of the virtual booths in order to share Crover's robotic innovation, and how it can contribute to Scotland's Net-Zero plans.

Finally, we have been featured in BBC Click , the BBC’s flagship technology programme, sharing news about innovation from all over the globe. Crover has been featured in Click's COP26 special : ‘Can Tech Save the World’. The episode broadcast several times over the last week, and included a section on the prevailing grain storage issues and how Crover’s robotics innovation can minimise grain loss. As well as the aforementioned highlights, we will be participating in the Hello Tomorrow Global Summit as one of the Deep Tech Pioneers. The event takes place between the 2nd and 3rd of December alongside 3,500 innovative startups, investors and companies in accelerating technological innovation; transforming international environmental and societal challenges to opportunities to make an impact.

The World’s First Subterranean Drone Designed to Protect Grain Quality

Each year, millions of tons of grain are lost due to spoilage caused by poor storage conditions. This waste doesn’t just impact farmers—it strains the global food supply chain. But Dr. Lorenzo Conti, founder of CROVER, may have found a solution to this costly problem.

CROVER has developed the world’s first subterranean drone, designed specifically to help grain storage operatorsmonitor and maintain the quality of their stock. Unlike traditional methods, which require farmers to walk across grain piles with heavy probes—posing both safety risks and limited data collection—CROVER’s robot “swims through grain” to collect real-time data on temperature and moisture levels.

This innovative approach not only reduces spoilage but also saves time and labor costs, enabling operators to proactively manage grain quality and prevent losses before they occur.

While CROVER is currently focused on centralized grain storage facilities operated by merchants and ports, future versions of the technology could be adapted for on-farm use, making it more accessible to individual farmers.

Crover reaches the target of its pre-seed funding round.

....But our equity crowdfunding campaign is not over yet!

We are pleased to announce the reach of the funding target of £150K for our first equity crowdfunding campaign on Crowdcube, with 20 days left to invest, with the campaign now being in “overfunding” mode.

After “bootstrapping”, raising more than £600k in innovation prizes and grants (including the likes of Scottish Enterprise and Innovate UK), Crover opened a seed funding round accessible to seasoned and new investors that want to be part of a pioneering, multi-award-winning company.

Crover will use these funds to advance the development of the Crover and to reach small series manufacturing, which will help with the set-up of additional pilots in the UK, EU, and potentially the US by next year.

The company has freshly grown its team to 12 Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) and it has recently been listed among the new generation of Scottish start-ups, with sustainability at their core .

Lorenzo Conti, Crover’s Founder , said: "We have now reached the £150K mark, signifying that the campaign is 100% funded! All the credit for this success goes to all of you that are believing in us. Thanks to our investors we have a chance to begin to tackle the inefficiencies of the agri-food system. But this does not mean that it is over yet! We have 20 days to the end of the fundraising campaign. Raising further funds, above the target, would help us speed up and reach more efficiently the aims that we have set for the company going forward!”

Jon Knight, Cover’s Non-Executive director and former head of AHDB Crop Protection Unit, said: “Farmers spend a lot of time and effort producing a good quality crop…and then it goes into store. The grain storage part is still a bit of a Cinderella subject and monitoring grain can be very time-consuming. It means making a lot of records, making those records available to different people.

“There is real value in developing better technology, with the ability to move within the grain and that can record condition information, in this particular space. Producing output that's directly accessible to quality assurance, like Red Tractor.”

Chivas Venture 2020 Finals

Crover shares $1 Million prize with the other venture finalists

We’re pleased to announce that Crover, one of the finalists of the 2020 Chivas Venture Global Competition, has received its share of this year’s $1 million prize; due to the current COVID-19 global pandemic, the prize money has been equally distributed among the 26 participants before the Global Final so each business can focus on creating positive impact.

Whilst our preference would have been to experience the thrill and challenge of the full Chivas Venture competition - learning from the 25 other finalists and pitching our business to judges - given the current situation facing the world, we fully support the decision to curtail the competition . We are extremely grateful to the Chivas Venture for its continued support.

We are confident that after this emergency, more opportunities will arise and there will be more competitions and challenges in the future for our team to be a part of!

All of us here at Crover would also like to give our sincere thanks and appreciation to all those people that are fighting this pandemic: the Medical practitioners, the workers in essential sectors such as food production and distribution, and also our fellow Bayes Centre residents that are using data to better understand the virus and it spreading.

Crover wins 3rd place in the Climate Launchpad grand final, the top global green business competition, becoming highest achieving Scottish team in the competition ever!

The Climate Launchpad global Grand Final, the world's largest clean-tech business ideas competition, with shortlisted finalists from 45 different countries competing, was hosted for the first time ever in Scotland by the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation. McEwan Hall was the majestic venue chosen for this important occasion.

Thanks to the Crover team and the fantastic support from everyone around us, it also became Scotland's first time to have a team making it in the top 3, with Crover receiving the 3rd prize and wowing the globally connected audience both on site and those streaming the event live.
ClimateKIC's CEO Kirsten Dunlop had compliments to spare for Crover's solution, saying it "will make us rethink the whole food storage system".

Crover wins Converge Challenge Kickstart award

At the annual Converge Challenge awards dinner, Crover's innovation was awarded the Kickstart award for best early stage startup!
Every year, Converge Challenge recognises the top startups to come out of Scottish Universities.

First competition, first award! Crover has started well its path to success by winning the November round of the Fresh Ideas competition. Crover, together with other highly commended businesses, will now move on to the Scottish final of Fresh Ideas. Let's hope this is the first of many successes!
