Just came back from the OpenStreetMap US conference in Boston meeting up with customers and open data legends (aka friends). Takeaways 👇 1. Geospatial AI models will be essential for companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. - I think it hasn’t sunk in yet how all remote mapping that relies on 1/ aerial 2/ kartaview + mapillary and 3/ online research can already be done by AI. LLMs still not used enough in map making. 2. OpenData surrounding OSM is stronger than ever. Examples: - Kartaview from GrabMaps is coming with full 360 degree imagery. - Overture Maps Foundation has great momentum on its baselayers. They are launching GERS - a way to refer to any place on earth with a single ID. 3. The Open Source map stack is just so fast and cheap these days. PMTiles are an incredible format, MapLibre can do 3D, using DuckDB you can just churn through hundreds of millions of objects in a spatial join. 4. Community - Every single commercial map provider was attending cause OSM is now unavoidable. - OSM US is now a mix of the big corporates (Meta et al), inventors in open source and open data and a loyal grassroots mapping community. An incredibly tight and friendly community. State of the Map 2016 in Brussels kickstarted a lot of my career after I launched #OpenMapTiles and #Maputnik so I owe the community a lot. See you in 2026.
