Google announced today that the VPN by Google One is shutting down in the coming months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>It was originally pitched as providing an \u201cextra layer of online protection for your Android phone\u201d and \u201cpeace of mind that your data is safe,&#8221; with the company publishing a <a href=\"https:\/\/one.google.com\/about\/vpn\/howitworks\">white paper<\/a> that detailed how it works. The company tells <em>9to5Google<\/em> that the deprecation will let the team &#8220;refocus&#8221; and &#8220;support more in-demand features with Google One.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this year, Google One hit <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2024\/02\/09\/google-one-100-million\/\">100 million subscribers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2024\/01\/30\/google-one-is-about-to-hit-100-million-subscribers\/\">CEO Sundar Pichai<\/a> teased it as a future growth area <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2024\/02\/08\/google-one-ai-premium\/\">driven by AI<\/a>. Today&#8217;s change follows this week&#8217;s news about <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2024\/04\/10\/google-photos-magic-editor-free\/\">AI editing tools<\/a> in Google Photos going free in the coming months and no longer requiring a subscription save for unlimited Magic Editor usage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>VPN by Google One is going away in the next few months, with no specific timeline provided today. Existing users will be directed to third-party VPN alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, there are no changes to the free Pixel VPN introduced with the Pixel 7 series <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2022\/11\/29\/google-one-vpn-pixel-7\/\">in 2022<\/a>. At the time, availability was guaranteed for five years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, the big VPN upgrade introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2023\/10\/12\/pixel-8-google-one-vpn\/\">with the Pixel 8 <\/a>is coming to the Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a, and Fold in June. Today&#8217;s change follows this week&#8217;s news about <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2024\/04\/10\/google-photos-magic-editor-free\/\">AI editing tools<\/a> in Google Photos going free in the coming months and no longer requiring a subscription save for unlimited Magic Editor usage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>VPN by Google One is going away in the next few months, with no specific timeline provided today. Existing users will be directed to third-party VPN alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, there are no changes to the free Pixel VPN introduced with the Pixel 7 series <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2022\/11\/29\/google-one-vpn-pixel-7\/\">in 2022<\/a>. At the time, availability was guaranteed for five years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, the big VPN upgrade introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2023\/10\/12\/pixel-8-google-one-vpn\/\">with the Pixel 8 <\/a>is coming to the Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a, and Fold in June.
