The Cricket Society’s Ian Jackson Award for Services to Cricket is our ‘Spirit of Cricket’ Award and goes annually to an individual or group who, through their distinguished endeavours and commitment to cricket, have met the mission and spirit of The Cricket Society. Recipients of this Award are chosen by the Executive Committee of The Cricket Society.

The award commemorates the memory of Ian Jackson, a former Chair of The Cricket Society, who died suddenly in 2008 after only a short period as our Chair. Ian had a strikingly enthusiastic attitude to life, with his love for and commitment to cricket shining through.

Honouring The ACE Programme

The 2025 award honours The ACE Programme, a pioneering charity committed to ‘Supporting Diverse Talent from the Grassroots to the Elite’, which seeks to broaden access to cricket for under-represented communities across the UK.

Launched initially under Surrey County Cricket Club in January 2020 and later incorporated as an independent charity, ACE was created to reverse the decline of Black British players in the professional game.

Operating now in multiple cities (including London, Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Nottingham and Sheffield), it runs community hubs, school programmes, academies, talent-identification pathways, and workforce development initiatives to nurture cricketing potential in African and Caribbean communities and other under-represented groups.

In just a few years, ACE has engaged tens of thousands of children in free cricket training, supported the emergence of professional players from under-served backgrounds, and challenged systemic barriers in the sport.

Most notably, three ACE graduates have already reached the professional level: Troy Henry (who debuted for Sussex), Amy Wheeler (contracted with the Blaze), and of course one of today’s award winners, Davina Perrin.

The Cricket Society Committee believes that The ACE Programme perfectly embodies the ideals behind the Ian Jackson Award, and we are proud that ACE have accepted this honour.

Annual Awards Lunch

Chevy Green, Director of Programmes at ACE, accepted the Ian Jackson Award from Guest Speaker Alec Stewart OBE at The Cricket Society’s Annual Awards Lunch at the Union Jack Club, London, on Thursday, 6th November. Chevy and ACE graduate Amy Wheeler was interviewed by Cricket Society Chair, Peter Hardy.

Davina Perrin won the Most Promising Young Female Cricketer – she was playing for Melbourne Renegades in the WBBL at the time of The Cricket Society’s Annual Awards Lunch at the Union Jack Club, London, on Thursday, 6th November. In her absence, her parents, David and Patricia, accepted the award on her behalf.

Phil Walker CBE, a respected and experienced businessman and Chair of the Council at Roehampton University, has been appointed as the new Chair of ACE – as Ebony Rainford-Brent MBE transitions to a new role as Founder of the charity.

The new leadership comes as ACE celebrates its fifth birthday following another remarkable season – headlined by Davina Perrin’s magnificent Hundred century at the Kia Oval and the continued success of ACE graduates Troy Henry and Amy Wheeler.

ACE Growth and Vision

Since April 2021, ACE (which stands for African Caribbean Engagement) have engaged over 40,000 young people and in the same period, there have been 230 participants in the ACE senior academy, aiming to emulate the success of Henry and Wheeler, who have signed professional contracts with Sussex and The Blaze respectively this summer.

As well as the original programme in south London, ACE now operates in Birmingham, Bristol, Sheffield, Nottingham, Manchester and north London, running programmes in schools, community hubs and regional academies.

By 2030, ACE aim to have helped developed ten professional cricketers, have 20,000 young people annually participating in grassroots programmes, continue to accelerate the growth of Black female cricketers and create a hybrid coach framework, helping Black coaches make their mark at all levels of the game.

Rainford-Brent – who was born in Lambeth and became the first Black woman to play cricket for England, winning both the Ashes and the World Cup – founded the charity as a community programme at Surrey CCC, the club she represented throughout her playing career, in January 2020.

ACE was established as an independent nationwide organisation later that year after significant funding was received from Sport England. Rainford-Brent has continued to chair ACE for five years, as it has grown to a charity that now delivers multiple programmes across six cities as well as an elite academy.

About Phil Walker

Phil Walker CBE has 30 years of business experience with partnership roles in IBM and PA Consulting and is now Chair of Council at Roehampton University. He was Chief Operating Officer of Capgemini for six years and led global projects in both the public and private sector. As well as this, he was a founding member of the ‘Powerlist’ and led an initiative to support London pupils into the world of work. He was awarded the CBE in the 2025 honours list, for his commitment to Higher Education, and mentoring in particular.

In his formative years, Phil played cricket for Combermere school in Barbados. He is a graduate of Loughborough University and also won national honours in basketball.

Whilst handing over the Chair role, Rainford-Brent will not be leaving ACE. She will remain a trustee of the organisation, continue to perform a key leadership role and attend the ACE Board, operating under the new title of Founder.

Alongside the Chair appointment, ACE are also welcoming a new trustee to the organisation, Born Barikor.

Barikor is the founder of Our Parks, an award-winning company that offer easy, barrier free access to quality exercise in local parks all over the country. He was the winner of the Senior Leader Entrepreneur award at the 2019 Black British Business Awards and was awarded an Honorary Degree as Doctor of Science from the University of Warwick. As well as this, he is a hip hop and grime MC who played and hosted alongside the biggest urban names of today during their journey from pirate radio to mainstream success.

"Founding and chairing ACE has been one of the greatest experiences of my life but, as the charity continues to grow and hit new heights, it requires fresh impetus. Phil is a passionate, experienced and hugely successful leader and I am excited to work alongside him and the wider ACE team to continue our support for diverse talent, from grassroots to the elite, and develop the game of cricket at all levels within the Black community.

Phil Walker CBE added:

“ACE has done some important and impressive work over the last five years, and it is a great honour to come in and help to continue the charity’s growth. Cricket has always been a huge part of my life, and I fully understand the power of the game to create important social change and transform people’s lives.

“I am looking forward to working with the ACE team across the country to continue our growth, create more professional players and support diverse talent, from grassroots to the elite.”

A New National Cricket Tournament Debuting in 2026

The ACE Programme is proud to announce the launch of the Syd Lawrence Competition, a brand-new national cricket tournament set to begin in 2026. Created to expand opportunity, enhance visibility, and strengthen long-term participation across the recreational game, the competition will be open to all cricket clubs across the UK.

While the competition proudly celebrates the contribution and legacy of African and Caribbean players in British cricket, its structure and philosophy are built around inclusivity, development, and nationwide engagement.

Format for the matches

Named in honour of former England fast bowler Syd Lawrence, the competition will feature two formats played concurrently:

The Syd Lawrence Trophy – T20 Competition
The Syd Lawrence Cup – 40-Over Competition

Both formats will be played using pink cricket balls and coloured kit, delivering a vibrant and modern match-day experience. Fixtures will be regionally grouped wherever possible to support travel, reduce barriers to participation, and prioritise player welfare.

To further enhance the quality and competitiveness of the 40-over format, each innings will begin with two new balls, one from each end, a defining feature designed to create a balanced contest between bat and ball.

Entry Deadline: 23 January 2026

The competition will be centrally administered by ACE to ensure high-quality governance, improved funding potential, enhanced visibility, and a consistent match-day experience across both formats. From Year 2 onwards, active participating clubs will be invited to join the competition committee, contributing to the administration, decision-making, and long-term development of the competition.

To assist with planning and scheduling for the 2026 season, please complete our Expression of Interest Form using the button below.

We look forward to welcoming your club to this exciting new competition and to working together as we build a nationwide platform that celebrates cricket, community, and opportunity.

Troy Henry has today become the first graduate of the ACE Programme to play professional men’s cricket – representing Sussex in the Metro Bank One Day Cup.

Henry, a 21-year-old left arm spinner, joined ACE at its original south London hub at the age of sixteen. He was given a rookie contract by Sussex earlier this year, with the contract extended for a further year in June.

Troy’s selection for today’s game marks a major milestone for ACE, who have agreed a goal to produce ten professional cricketers across the men’s and women’s game over the next five years. Amy Wheeler, a seamer for The Blaze, has also earned a contract extension for next season and has represented both The Blaze and Worcestershire this summer.

After a 75% decline of Black players in English domestic game – and further statistics showing less than 1% of recreational players from the Black community – the ACE Programme was setup by former Surrey and England all-rounder Ebony Rainford-Brent and Surrey County Cricket Club in 2020, with the vision to support diverse talent, from the grassroots to the elite in south London.

Whats next?

Since then, it has become an independent charity, achieving significant funding from Sport England that has allowed further programmes to be established in Nottingham, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Sheffield, north London and south east London. Over the last five years, ACE has engaged with over 40,000 young people – including 233 that have gone on to be selected for ACE Elite Academies. ACE runs schools’ programmes, community hubs and elite academies in all eight locations.

Over the next five years, ACE are also targeting accelerated growth in women’s and girls’ cricket – with a goal to have at least 80 female cricketers on its talent pathways by 2030 – and to create an ACE coaches’ network to further reconnect the Black British community to cricket.

As well as Surrey CCC, ACE have enjoyed significant support from across the game, with major partnerships in place with Sport England, ECB and counties across the country. Sky Sports produced a documentary – ACE In the Making – in 2024, documenting part of Troy and Amy’s journey to the professional game.

Full support from ACE

ACE Founder and Chair Ebony Rainford-Brent MBE said: “Seeing Troy walk out for Sussex today is a massive moment for him and for the ACE Programme. We’re all incredibly proud of the hard work Troy has put in over the last five years and hope his success can be replicated many times over going forward.”

Troy’s parents, Holly and Harvey Henry, said: “This is a very proud moment for all the family – members are eagerly tuning in from around the world including Guyana and Canada!

“It is a credit to all of Troy’s hard work and determination to reach this point and we are extremely grateful to all the ACE family who have helped him reach this point – and Sussex for making a dream come true.”
