The Industry Curriculum Development for Senior Care and Transportation (ICDEV) Project was a two-year initiative funded by the Government of Ontario to develop workplace language training for newcomers to Canada.
The project developed two sets of eUnits (seven eUnits in total) as part of occupation-specific language training, focusing on providing information about occupations in the Senior Care and School Transportation sectors—areas that have faced labour shortages in recent years.
The online language courses aim to raise awareness of in-demand roles in both sectors. The seven eUnits were developed in collaboration with experienced subject matter experts to reflect current workplace realities, show realistic workplace scenarios and equip learners with the necessary language skills to excel in these roles. The seven new e-learning units—designed for learners at Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) levels 5 to 7—were published on the Avenue.ca platform.
Learners will complete self-correcting, interactive online exercises, collaborative forum activities and online or in-class assessment tasks. All units can be taught in blended or fully online modalities. Accompanying instructor guides, printable in-class resources and lists of additional materials were added to support delivery.
The units are available to all LINC/ESL instructors with an Avenue account.
