This is a slippery slope I’m happy to slide down. I also don’t think Prince Edward is the one who needs to worry about “historical erasure.”

Why stop there?
Let’s rename OTHER provinces according to their Canadian Indian names!
Then the WHOLE country too! Hah you come across as short sighted and not aware of historical erasure.
But jmo as my words won’t likely matter

Now you are seen as an energy producer and pushing electricity out into the net will carry a charge, like for any other producer. Also your production will not be counted against your usage 1 on 1, but less favorable (and in time at real time prices) This means you can be net paying at peak solar production (less your usage at the same time). Storage capacity is rising as a result. As a consequence I concluded a few years ago that if we put solar on our house, it only makes sense with ampls storage

I should have mentioned that Steve. When I bought this house, it already had the solar panels (awesome) and the previous owner warned me right away: when the power goes out, you’re solar panels don’t help you. I assumed, and imagined that most people would assume, that your solar panels could keep you going during a power outage. I’ve updated the post to note this – thanks!

I’ve been doing something like that instinctively with family logistics, so when someone asks for a drive to school or work or yoga, I know this is three “events”: their actual thing, the buffer to arrive early for the drop, and if I’m picking them up, usually leaving before their shift ends. My personal calendar looks chaotic because of all these strange little events, but once you have two or three of these in a day, the overlaps get complicated fast. Margin/padding is a nice way for me to think of my own planning and be prepared when others generally put little thought in the dependencies of multiple events.

Writing can also be the chisel that helps form the thought. An idea might start out misshapen, and you can only notice that once you’ve written it down. LLMs don’t encourage the kind of hard work it takes to turn a thought into words for others (although they _can_ be used to help with this).

Your raisin bran is not alone in having a substandard version: as a rule, most attempts fail. They can’t be sealed, or they can only be half-sealed.

The only consistently successful approach is the one that Bob’s Red Mill products use, which is more keen to Velcro than Ziploc.

At the arrival of the first Europeans to the region, it was inhabited by the Miꞌkmaq. Over the course of several hundred years, the island (and the maritime region overall) would be home to various peoples, the Miꞌkmaq, Acadians, French, the English. For the few centuries prior to the establishment of the provinces and Confederation, these groups often lived side by side and interacted with each other in contexts that were not violent or necessarily immoral. Beyond those groups there were of course smaller minority populations that also lived on the island, and to this day PEI is home to a diverse population.

My fear with terms like ‘Epekwitk’ is one of national identity and historical legacy. As a citizen of Canada who has ancestral and historical ties to the maritimes (I am descended directly from an Acadian family who settled in the maritime region in the mid 17th century), I do not identify as Miꞌkmaq, nor do I consider the Miꞌkmaq Nation to be my own.

While the The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) both say that reclaiming Indigenous place names is an important part of addressing historical injustices, I think that not only is that not true, but not logically sound.

There is no movement in France to rename the country ‘Gaul’, even though the Gauls were the ancestral peoples of that country, for example. Perhaps there is a difference, however, in that the Gauls as a distinct cultural and national identity no longer exist. They went extinct in that sense long ago, while the Miꞌkmaq continue to live and practice their distinct cultural traits.

However, the current name of ‘France’ is derived from the term ‘Frank’, which is the name for a germanic tribe that migrated into the territory that now bears their name. In other words, these Frankish tribes ‘colonized’ the land, replaced the Gauls and Romans as the dominant group through gradual assimilation, and now, after over a thousand years, the Gallic identity is dead, and the land no longer bears its ancestral name of Gaul.

If France were to follow the UNDRIP and TRC recommendations, they would rename the country to something akin to ‘Gaul’. This, obviously, is not something that would ever happen, as the majority population of the country has no real connection to the ‘ancestral’ population that was the Gauls.

Similarly, renaming PEI to Epekwtik would be to completely disregard the other inhabitants and their historical ties to the region, who have just as strong a claim to the land as they do.

I am not arguing from a racist or anti-indigenous perspective, nor does my opposition to renaming it Epekwtik stem from some sort of historical denialism. I am simply pointing out that while historical truths of colonization, waves of migration, the preference of European settlers over the Miꞌkmaq by later polities did exist, it does not mean that it must define our path going forwards. Course correcting by swinging hard in the opposite direction seems just as demeaning as swinging hard the other way.

As a Canadian, I am proud of my nation, and am happy to live here, to participate in my civic duties and honour my own ancestors, just like the Miꞌkmaq honour their own. It is possible to not only reconciliate with indigenous nations and the crimes of the past, but also to honour our own heritage as Canadians. Too often do Canadians disregard our own history and the beliefs that founded this nation. Too often do Canadians deem characters of the their past as irrelevant because they had 18th or 19th century worldviews. Yes, historical figures operated with different philosophies and moralities, but that is not a justification to disregard the positives that they brought forth. Do Canadians forget we are one of the oldest of the few continuous democracies to have ever existed on planet earth? The creation of the social safety nets we so cherish now, from the healthcare system to income support programs (Canada Pension Plan, Canada Child Benefit, Old Age Security). All of these things were oftentimes brought to us by the same people we decry as vile and not deserving of any respect or our attention.

Perhaps the anglicization of the term to ‘Abegweit’ is suitable, but we shouldn’t limit ourselves to a binary between British colonial terms or Miꞌkmaq terms. We have a diverse and unique history, culture, and more modern dynamics to help inspire new names for places across Canada, should our goal continue to be to rename.

But … it was even more convenient to just set the laptop on the docking station and push gently to latch it in, then push the eject button to free it. All gross movements, not fine movements requiring good eye-hand coordination. And the docking station never slid off the back of the desk.

Also … USB-C is as janky as any docking station: From time to time, it just doesn’t connect to the mouse, or the ethernet, or the scanner, all of which are connected through the USB hub on the back of the big Dell monitor. I mean, it’s cool to hide cables in the monitor arm. (The keyboard and mouse use a tiny wireless receiver.) Before the monitor, I tried a bunch of USB-C docks, all of which simply didn’t work at all.

But I’ll stop complaining. Yeah, it is an improvement.

I’ve had a plug-in Pacifica for 3 years. I like it. I don’t know if I will continue to like it out of warranty, because it has had a few problems that would have been expensive as out-of-warranty repairs. And mine only has 18k miles on it. I go through about a quarter of a tank of gas per year, now that we have an EV for long trips and just use the Pacifica around town. I wouldn’t go through any gas, but the computer insists the gas must be burned from time to time, lest it go stale. So, I keep a quarter tank of gas in it and about twice a year the computer puts it into “fuel refresh mode” which is all-gas driving.
In gas mode it gets about 31 MPG. That 44.1 mpg sounds unrealistic — maybe that was over a flat course at 45 mph? Or they started out with a fully charged traction battery so the 115 mile was 30 at infinite mpg and the rest at 31 mpg?

Comment on The lost dream of the electric minivan by Steve Williams https://actsofvolition.com/2024/07/the-lost-dream-of-the-electric-minivan/#comment-14577 Sun, 21 Jul 2024 19:12:20 +0000 https://actsofvolition.com/?p=17715#comment-14577 I also dream of an EV minivan, but my use case is different: I sold my 1984 VW Vanagon Westfalia camper a few years ago, and I really need to replace it with something more practical. I’d love to take all but two seats out of an EV minivan and create a custom camping interior in the rear. There are even a few companies offering (expensive!) custom pop-tops.

In the meantime, I read that the Chrysler Pacifica is one of the best minivans available, and the Pacifica plug-in hybrid model is available now. The AAA used car buying service lists a 2021 Limited model near me for around $30.5K. I’m planning to go look at it.

That AAA service offers lease-return vehicles through dealers, no haggling. That’s how I got my 2017 Outback in 2021, and I still love it. But the Outback too small for comfortable car camping. I bought a small trailer and towed it with the Outback on a coast-to-coast trip. That was a great experience, but it taught me that I’m really a van person.

The Pacifica PHEV has a 32-mile electric range, and Edmunds says they got 44.1 mpg on their 115-mile test course. My Outback got 37.2 mpg on my 333-mile trip last week, including the Grapevine, so I might not be disappointed with the Pacifica!

There are rumors the Pacifica EV may be available in 2028. Can I wait that long? Will democracy even last that long?

I can’t think of other ads they’ve done that involve destruction of any kind — they tend to (almost cloyingly) stick to the elegant, uplifting, enabling. “We invited you to fantasize about how much better/easier/cooler your life would be with our product” and that ad really does not do that. And also, yes: the wholesale rearrangement at Sobeys is a huge overwhelm. Neural pathways that I’ve developed over 25 years have been tossed asunder nothing is where it should be. The primary value proposition for my continuing to shop there religiously was predictability: I knew where the chick peas were. Now I don’t.

Excess — let’s call ’em “hard drives” — are wastes that need to be replicated eventually (more efficiently than we can do today, likely, but manufacture is surely always going to be very costly relative to computation).

Unless there is reason to believe the cost of the compression calculations per unit will decrease, in which case there’s some future crossover between electricity bills and the cost of building “RAW Storage Facility 865,542,278.”

Our place is fairly large to accommodate my dozens of children. I wasn’t really sure how our 51GJ/y number compared to others. The solar panels must be carrying a lot of the load for us, and we’re rarely burning oil any more. There’s more to do!

We chose to look at this as a “nowhere to go but better” rating. The house is 197 years old, no insulation in the walls, no basement insulation, very old windows. I’m hopeful we can get into sub-100 GJ territory.

A digital photo frame uses less energy to display an image from its own storage than a web server responding to an urgent request from the Mars colony.

I’m not sure. I could measure – but I’m not sure how accurate it would be. I know what you mean about the screws being too tall. I did talk to a guitar tech who thought he could just get new screws (or even file/cut the existing screws), but they weren’t really bothering me.

I just got one of these, and I really dig it, but the bridge height screws are too long and it sucks to palm mute on. So I’m looking at getting new saddles, but I want to make sure I get the right width ones.

I assume they’re 10.5mm, because I have another Pacifica that’s very similar and that one has 10.5mm spacing, but these ones are a lot more rare and harder to find information on.
