In the latest edition of the german spcialized magazine “Mikroproduktion”, we have published an exciting technical article in which we take a deep dive into the topic of fiber optics assembly and the importance of silicon photonics (SiPho) and photonic integrated circuits (PICs). These technologies are crucial for modern telecommunication and data applications as well as for future-oriented fields such as quantum technology.

Why precision in fiber optics assembly is so important

The requirements for precision in fiber optics assembly are immense, as even the smallest deviations can affect performance. Our new generation of Fiberbeast Gen 2 machines has been developed to meet these challenges. With its advanced technology, it ensures that every component is precisely positioned and mounted, resulting in significantly increased light transmission efficiency.

The “Fiberbeast Gen 2”: Innovation in three core areas

Our engineers have developed the “Fiberbeast Gen 2” in three main disciplines: Actuators, Sensors and Operability. By using collaborative micromanipulators and state-of-the-art sensors, the machine can detect and adjust even the smallest movements and deviations in the nanometer range. The result is maximum precision, which is essential for applications in telecommunications and quantum technology in particular.

Modularity for adaptability and cost efficiency

The “Fiberbeast Gen 2” is characterized by a modular architecture that allows the machine to be flexibly adapted to a wide range of requirements and reduce operating costs. This flexibility ensures that the machine not only serves as an assembly and test platform, but is also suitable for applications such as lidar systems, lasers and medical endoscopes.

AIXEMTEC’s Technology: Precision and Performance for the Optical Industry

Founded in 2016 as a spin-off of the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology (IPT), AIXEMTEC has specialized in developing and manufacturing high-precision machines for the nanometer-accurate positioning and assembly of optical components. AIXEMTEC’s systems integrate automated measurement and control technologies. This ensures the highest levels of precision and performance, essential in the field of precision optics, where the demands for accuracy and quality are exceptionally high. With the partnership with Schunk, AIXEMTEC will further enhance its innovative capacity and extend its technological solutions worldwide.

“With the Schunk Group, we gain a strong partner who supports us not only through financial resources but also with a global sales network and extensive experience in the technology sector,” said Sebastian Haag, Managing Director of AIXEMTEC. “This partnership enables us to strengthen our presence in international markets and fully realize the enormous potential of our technology.”

Strategic Fit for Schunk: Extending the Process Chain in Precision Optics

The Schunk Group also sees the investment in AIXEMTEC as a strategic opportunity. “AIXEMTEC is an ideal fit for us, as the company perfectly complements our expertise in grinding, polishing, and coating optical components. Together, we can now offer our customers solutions covering the entire process chain,” explained Dr. Petra Schmidt, COO of the Machinery & Equipment Division at Schunk. The Schunk Group views this partnership as a way to explore new markets, such as miniaturized cameras, photonic integrated circuits, and laser systems, which are increasingly important within the optics industry.

Synergies for Innovation and New Solutions

A key aspect of this partnership lies in strengthening the innovation potential of both companies. By working closely with other Schunk Group companies, such as OptoTech and Pulsar Photonics, AIXEMTEC gains new opportunities to develop integrated, innovative solutions. “With this partnership, we are not only expanding our presence in an important future market but also creating clear added value for our customers by offering comprehensive solutions to meet their needs,” added Peter R. Manolopoulos, CEO of the Schunk Group.
