Our accessibility commitment to you and your students.

Every learner deserves the opportunity to succeed. That’s why we’re continuously improving Aktiv Chemistry to better support accessible, inclusive learning. The Aktiv platform meets Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standards for instructors and students when using questions that are marked as accessible.

A platform that makes chemistry interactive and accessible

Accessibility is central to Aktiv’s development. Aktiv supports keyboard navigation and assistive technologies such as screen readers and magnification tools. Many interactive question types—such as the AktivGrid Drawing and Interpret Arrows, Nomenclature with Smart Suggestions and Graphing questions—meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards when they contain accessible content elements (like alt text if an image is included).

An expanding library of accessible chemistry questions

Aktiv’s question library already includes a wide range of accessible chemistry questions—and it continues to grow in size, variety and discoverability.

Creating compliant assignments is simple. Chemistry educators use the “Only accessible questions” filter to identify compliant problems. They can assign accessible assignments to the entire class, or to individuals or groups of students. It’s also easy to accommodate students needing extra time directly from the student detail page.

Accessibility Conformance Addendum
(WCAG 2.1 Level AA Standards)

Following a major user interface modernization and migration to Top Hat’s accessible design system, Aktiv completed a comprehensive accessibility evaluation of our platform in March 2026. This effort ensures the student and instructor experiences across both web and mobile continue to align with WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards.

The results of this evaluation are available in our VPAT Addendum, which provides updated conformance statements and notes any exceptions. This document reflects our current platform behavior and should be reviewed alongside our primary VPAT documentation for a complete overview of our accessibility status.
