If you still interested in maintaining your project on your free time, I suggest you to build it on Debian stable, that gives you a little changes and problems free most of the time, next you need to target specific Linux users, e.g. if you target home/office users, then you need to make your Linux has everything out of the box (but not a bloated distro), next you have to build some tools (user friendly) to distinguish your distro, e.g. an elegant desktop customization, colors, icons. wallpapers, sounds, logos .. etc..

So, basically you create a distro that you could use, while you’re using it and happy, you don’t mind sharing it with others.
