The article highlights how operators must navigate an increasingly complex environment shaped by fragmented regulations, rising geopolitical tensions, insurance pressures, and growing demand driven in part by artificial intelligence. While global frameworks such as UNCLOS provide a foundation, in practice cable systems must operate across multiple jurisdictions, creating operational challenges, particularly when urgent repairs are required.

The article also examines the realities of maintaining this critical infrastructure, noting that most cable faults are caused by everyday maritime activity such as fishing and anchoring, rather than malicious events. Repair operations are highly specialised and can be costly, with limited vessel availability adding further pressure. As artificial intelligence continues to drive demand and introduce new operational tools, the industry is placing greater emphasis on resilience, route diversity, and collaboration across stakeholders. Ultimately, the piece reinforces that protecting submarine cables is not only a technical priority, but also a financial, legal, and geopolitical imperative.
