Azure Well-Architected Framework

Design and build well-architected cloud workloads optimized to meet your ongoing business needs.
Overview

Design workloads that achieve business value over time

  • Use the Well‑Architected Framework to build and run secure, high‑performing, cost‑efficient Azure workloads with proven best practices, tools, and guidance.
  • The Azure Well-Architected Framework defines five pillars—reliability, cost optimization, operational excellence, performance efficiency, and security—which you can prioritize by workload. Build and manage these workloads using Microsoft best practices and resources, including the Azure Well-Architected Review, Azure Advisor, and Azure Architecture Center.

  • Design applications to recover from failures at any scale by building reliability into your architecture. Traditional approaches rely on redundant, high‑end hardware to avoid failure, but failure is inevitable. Cloud‑native reliability focuses on minimizing impact—delivering high availability and rapid recovery from events such as component failures, data loss, extended downtime, or ransomware incidents.
  • Cost optimization focuses on reducing unnecessary spend and improving efficiency. Design economically efficient workloads by balancing business goals with budget needs, using Azure tools and guidance to optimize costs and forecast spending.
  • In the Well‑Architected Framework, operational excellence focuses on the processes that keep applications running in production. Reliable, predictable deployments and full observability are essential. Monitoring and diagnostics provide the visibility needed to quickly identify where and when failures occur.
  • Performance efficiency requires anticipating demand and scaling to meet business needs. With Azure, you can adjust capacity without long‑term predictions, balancing performance and cost as you scale using well‑architected principles.
  • Well-architected workloads rely on secure services and practices. Security is a core pillar that enables organizations to operate, innovate, and scale by ensuring confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Azure protects workloads with multilayered, AI‑driven security across datacenters, infrastructure, and operations—backed by 8,500+ Microsoft cybersecurity experts—so SecOps teams can focus on what matters most.
