Oggi celebriamo uno dei momenti più iconici della storia: il primo passo dell’uomo sulla Luna.

E io l’ho fatto… in BASIC!

Per l’occasione ho scritto un semplice gioco in BASIC per Commodore 64, con l’aiuto dell’intelligenza artificiale.

Il gameplay è una piccola simulazione di atterraggio lunare, in stile Lunar Lander.

Ho poi usato Basic Boss per compilare il codice in un eseguibile C64.

Il “vibe coding” con l’AI è stato divertente, ma non privo di sorprese:  a un certo punto ho dovuto spiegare che in BASIC le variabili VR1 e VR2 sono in realtà la stessa variabile, perché il linguaggio distingue solo i primi due caratteri –  da lì era nato uno dei bug più subdoli

Let’s hope not, and let’s hope that we can just enjoy the games and this nuka-wow calendar I have made for you.

Every month of the 2025 will be under some picture taken from the lore and converted for Commodore 64.

I have spent lots of time in the conversion process, it’s not easy to fit something hires in a low resolution screen and only for a 2/3 area of it, so please send me some l<3ve ! 

Download the disk and launch it on your preferred emulator or – better – on your real machine. 

Press fire to pop the months’ selector menu up, or press up to set the next picture for the current month.

A volte basta dare un nome a una buona pratica per metterla … in pratica.

Un collega mi ha parlato della “tecnica del pomodoro” per autoregolamentarsi sulla produttività. In sostanza, ci si concentra 25 minuti senza interruzioni su un task, per poi prendersi 5 minuti di pausa (magari svolgendo un task più leggero).

E’ una buona pratica che penso abbiamo più o meno tutti messo in atto qualche volta, magari inconsciamente.

Chi non si è mai imposto, ad esempio, di portare avanti un certo compito fino al punto X senza interruzioni?

Però il vantaggio di uno strumento che accompagni questo processo è innegabile. Gli deleghiamo il ruolo di arbitro del nostro tempo, e in qualche modo ci condiziona a fare quello che ci siamo imposti di fare.

Volendo unire l’utile al dilettevole, ho implementato un programmino in Basic v2, per Commodore 64, che fa “partire” il pomodoro, disegnandone un pezzo nuovo ogni 5 minuti, fino al completamento della figura. Ogni 5 minuti un piccolo suono ci avvisa che sono appena passati, e al termine dei 25 minuti un suono più lungo ci ricorda di prendere una pausa.

Il programma funziona piacevolmente come desktop companion in emulazione, tenendo quindi aperta la finestra di Vice (ad esempio) con il tool caricato. Se per qualche motivo la finestra non è visibile, ci pensa il suono ad avvisarci degli eventi.

Per task ripetitivi o noiosi è un ottimo aiuto per non distrarsi, e poi … è Commodore!

You are a mega-well-known android whose megablaster weapon has been stoled by some evil creatures, the Malfunconing Eccentric Tinkerbots (M.E.T. from now) .

In this game you have to run across 3 levels in order to rescue your weapon.

To accomplish that objecve you have to overcome the 3 levels twice. Will you be able to arrive to the end

with some energy left?

You can choose to play in “normal” difficulty level or Hard. In Hard mode you have some limitations, making the game more difficult.

“RobCo Industries Termlink procol” is the way you can hack Fallout’s terminal (at least in Fallout 3 and 4, I don’t know if also in others).

This is a little transposition of that game, made in Basic V2 for Commodore 64 (with just a little help of ASM for some scroll effects).

There are plenty of words, all 7 letters long for easyness, generated by ChatGpt in order to save time.

Enjoy your training in hacking terminals, so that you can be stronger when playing that in Fallout!

Benvenuti alla prima edizione del The Timebox 64 Christmas contest!

Di che si tratta?

Il contest vi vedrà impegnati a creare una animazione con il mitico (ehm) The Timebox 64, secondo il tema “NATALE“. Non importa quale animazione decidiate di fare, se un albero di natale, una renna, la grotta con Gesù Bambino, Babbo Natale, ecc, l’importante è che il tema sia questo. Le animazioni verranno giudicate come di seguito dettagliato (vedere “criteri di giudizio delle animazioni”).

C’è un premio?

Assolutamente sì! A Natale siamo tutti più buoni, no? L’animazione vincitrice verrà premiata con una copia cartacea, stampata e rilegata, del calendario digitale 2024 Star Wars, creato come programma per Commodore 64 ( a proposito, potete scaricarlo gratuitamente su https://back2the8bit.itch.io/star-wars-2024-c64-calendar ). Le spese di spedizione saranno a carico mio in Europa, se il vincitore è fuori Europa gli chiederò un contributo a seconda del costo. Se non vincete, potete sempre acquistare una copia su ebay

E chi non vince?

Come dicevo sopra, a Natale siamo tutti più buoni! TUTTE le animazioni che mi verranno inviate saranno unite in una unica demo per Commodore 64 (RAM permettendo, ma confido di farcela, possono entrare molti frames, le immagini sono rese come colorazione di una griglia di quadrati “PETSCII”) e verrà resa disponibile per il download. Chiaramente, questo significa che se mi inviate una animazione siete consapevoli che verrà resa pubblica e scaricabile, anche singolarmente (non si sa mai, meglio specificarlo).

Da quando a quando?

Il contest inizia il 21/11/2023 e termina il 31/12/2023. Avete quindi molto tempo! Datemene altrettanto per valutare i vostri lavori e per creare la demo finale, diciamo che per l’Epifania dovrei pubblicare i vincitori e la mega – demo! Seguite la pagina facebook per gli aggiornamenti.

Criteri di giudizio delle animazioni

(in ordine di importanza, dal più importante al meno importante):

1. Comprensibilità della grafica: la griglia 16×16 con i 16 colori del Commodore 64 non è il massimo dal punto di vista della facilità di chiarezza. Ad esempio, se si vuole rappresentare una figura umana intera, i dettagli si perderanno necessariamente, mentre invece un volto è già più completo. Insomma dovete fare in modo che non sia necessario interpretare cosa c’è sullo schermo.

2. Fattore wow: è difficile dire cosa può farmi esclamare “wow”, perché è soggettivo. Tuttavia, l’uso sapiente dei colori, lo scrolling (in parallasse? wow!), la quantità di dettagli sono certamente aspetti che colpiscono.
   ——
3. lunghezza: ho messo questo aspetto per ultimo perché un’animazione può essere molto bella anche con soli due frames. In generale, però, un’animazione che “racconta una storia” è certamente degna di attenzione.

Come inviare la propria animazione

Quando siete soddisfatti del risultato ottenuto con il programma ( https://the-timebox-64.000webhostapp.com/ ) , cliccate il pulsante di salvataggio (sotto la voce “Save”) e inviatemi il file .txt all’indirizzo email: back2the8bit AT gmail.com (cambiare ” AT ” con “@”). Prima però aprite il file con un editor di testo (in generale basta farci doppio click) e modificate le sezioni riguardo all’autore e al titolo (sono le parti di testo che trovate tra i tag author e quote, le vedete sottolineate qui in figura).

ATTENZIONE: A fine concorso, verrà pubblicata una pagina con i vostri lavori, per cui decidete bene quale nickname volete usare, perché verrà mostrato sotto alla vostra opera! E il titolo che volete dare all’animazione non può essere più lungo di 60 caratteri, la parte eccedente viene automaticamente troncata.

Welcome to the first edition of The Timebox 64 Christmas contest!

What is it about? 

The contest will challenge you to create an animation with the legendary The Timebox 64, based on the theme “CHRISTMAS“. It doesn’t matter what animation you choose to create, whether it’s a Christmas tree, a reindeer, the manger with Baby Jesus, Santa Claus, etc., the important thing is that the theme is Christmas. The animations will be judged as detailed below (see “animation judging criteria”).

Is there a prize? 

Absolutely! We all become more generous during Christmas, right? The winning animation will be awarded a printed and bound hard copy of the 2024 Star Wars digital calendar, designed as a program for the Commodore 64 (by the way, you can download it for free at https://back2the8bit.itch.io/star-wars-2024-c64-calendar). Shipping costs within Europe will be covered by me. If the winner is outside of Europe, I will request a contribution based on the shipping costs. If you don’t win, you can always purchase a copy on ebay 

And what about the non-winners? 

As I mentioned before, we all become more generous during Christmas! ALL the animations that are sent to me will be joined together in a single demo for the Commodore 64 (assuming there’s enough RAM, but I trust we can manage to fit in many frames, the pictures are rendered as painting of a matrix of PETSCII chars “full square”) and will be made available for download. Of course, this means that if you submit an animation, you are aware that it will be made public and downloadable, even individually (you never know, it’s better to specify it).

When does it take place? 

The contest starts on 21/11/2023 and ends on 31/12/2023. So, you have plenty of time! I will also take a similar amount of time to evaluate your work and create the final demo, aiming to publish the winners and the mega-demo by Epiphany! Follow the Facebook page for updates.

Animation Judging Criteria 

(in order of importance, from most important to least important):

1. Graphic clarity: The 16×16 grid with the 16 colors of the Commodore 64 is not ideal when it comes to clarity. For example, if you want to represent a whole human figure, the details will inevitably be lost, whereas a face is more complete. In short, you need to ensure that it is not necessary to interpret what is on the screen.
   ——
2. Wow factor: It is difficult to say what would make me exclaim “wow” because it is subjective. However, skillful use of colors, scrolling (parallax scrolling? wow!), and the level of detail are certainly aspects that captivate.
   ——
3. Length: I have listed this aspect last because an animation can be very beautiful even with just two frames. However, in general, an animation that “tells a story” certainly deserves attention.

How to submit your animation

When you are satisfied with the result obtained with the program ( https://the-timebox-64.000webhostapp.com/ ), click the save button (under the “Save” voice) and send me the .txt file to the email address: back2the8bit AT gmail.com (replace ” AT ” with “@”). But before that, open the file with a text editor (usually double-clicking on it is enough) and modify the sections regarding the author and the title (these are the text parts that you find between the author and quote tags, they are underlined here in the figure).

ATTENTION: At the end of the contest, a page will be published with your works, so choose wisely the nickname you want to use, as it will be displayed below your artwork! And the title you want to give to the animation cannot exceed 60 characters, the exceeding part will be automatically truncated.

WHAT IS ABOUT THIS TOOL

You have 2 files:

1) a file with .d64 extension: is the virtual floppy disk for the Commodore 64 ‘s Star Wars Calendar (real machine or emulator), plus a second little prg, a death star animation with some music.

2) a PDF file: it’s the “physical” calendar to print. It’s made of the C64 version screenshots, so what you see on the monitor is the same you print.
