"AI: The Good, The Bad, and the Game-Changer" Book Release

Excited to share the launch of the sample edition of my upcoming book:
AI: The Good, The Bad, and the Game-Changer

This project brings together a global network of voices—from leading researchers to emerging thinkers across 20+ countries—to reflect on one of the most pressing questions of our time:

What if AI isn’t just transforming the world, but reshaping what it means to be human?

The sample edition includes:

  • 🔹 Essays on the accelerating role of AI in healthcare, education, creativity, and labor
  • 🔹 Reflections on the ethical, environmental, and social costs of “intelligent” technologies
  • 🔹 A powerful interview with Asma Derja: “AI for Good, But for Whom?”
  • 🔹 Perspectives from grassroots leaders on what inclusive, ethical AI could look like

🎯 Call for Contributors – First Full Edition

As editor, I’m now inviting contributions for the full first edition. If you’re working on critical issues in AI—whether from research, policy, education, the arts, or activism—I’d love to hear from you.

This book is a platform to bring diverse, global, and often underrepresented voices into the AI conversation. If you have a bold idea, a lived experience, or a vision for a more inclusive AI future, I encourage you to apply.

📥 Download the book sample: https://basira-lab.com/ai-the-good-the-bad-and-the-game-changer/

Islem Rekik: Graph Neural Nets for Brain Connectomics

I had a wonderful time speaking on the “AI-ready Healthcare” podcast, co-hosted by Prof Anirban Mukhopadhyay and Henry J. Krumb, this past July.

– Podcast link: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/islem-rekik-graph-neural-nets-for-brain-connectomics/

During the episode, I shared a bit about my hashtagcareer hashtagjourney, including my moves across hashtagcontinents and hashtagcultures—from hashtagJapan to hashtagTurkey, then to the hashtagUSA, and now the hashtagUK. I also discussed some of the early hashtaggenerative hashtagneuroAI hashtagmodels we developed in hashtagconnectomics, where we model the interactions between different parts of the hashtagbrain into a hashtaggraph, known as a hashtagconnectome.

I felt excited to also talk about our latest research on designing hashtagaffordable hashtagAI models and shared our hashtagvision of reforming education on a global scale. This includes teaching students not just how to do, but how to be—creating new hashtagholistic hashtagcurricula that guide us to be consciously human in the age of AI. It is about fostering hashtagvalues, hashtagmorality, and hashtagbecoming, as hashtagKierkegaard might say, “philosophers of the heart.”

If you get a chance to listen, I’d love to hear which part or idea resonated most with you 😊

Fair Federated AI (FIFAI) Summer School 2024

We are excited to announce the successful conclusion of the “Fair Federated AI” (FIFAI) 2024 Summer School, organized by the RISE MICCAI and coordinated by Dr Charles Delahunt from Global Health Labs. We also thank Charles and Dr Andrea Lara from the University of Galileo for chairing the first two days of FIFAI. The Summer School attracted more than 110 global attendees from Nepal to Chile!

Special thanks go to Prof Andrew King for delivering an insightful lecture on “AI and Fairness,” and to Dr Esther Puyol Antón for chairing and co-organizing the event. We also extend our appreciation to Tiarna Lee, Marouène SAIDI, and all the lab leads for their significant contributions to the summer school. If you’re a FIFAI volunteer or lab lead, feel free to acknowledge your efforts with a star (⭐) below—you’ve certainly earned it! ❤

Big kudos to Michael Alummoottil for organizing the FIFAI Kaggle competition. In this first edition of FIFAI, eight teams competed in a binary classification challenge using federated learning to classify chest X-ray images with imbalanced label distribution. The competition highlighted the important issue of fairness in AI within decentralized data environments.

Congratulations to our 🏆top three winners🏆: 1st place Rahmat Izwan Herozafor, 2nd place Jaeyoung Cho, and 3rd place Prabin Bohara. Their winning solutions are now available on the FIFAI GitHub: https://github.com/RISE-MICCAI/FIFAI-Summer-School-2024

We would like to thank all the speakers, lab leads, and participants whose efforts made this event a success. As RISE continues its mission to empower researchers in low- and middle-income countries and beyond, we look forward to advancing the development of fairer AI together.
