Our Story
Beyond Nuclear was founded in July 2007 by Linda Pentz Gunter. In early 2007, renowned anti-nuclear activist and pediatrician Dr. Helen Caldicott informed Linda that she was planning to close her Washington, DC-based nonprofit, Nuclear Policy Research Institute. Caldicott is also a founder of Physicians for Social Responsibility, a two-time winner of the Nobel Peace Prize (1985 and 2017). In the summer of 2007, the NPRI 501 (c) (3) was transferred to Linda and Beyond Nuclear was born. Beyond Nuclear Board Member Emerita, Kay Drey, who had recruited Linda to the previous organization where they both served, became Beyond Nuclear’s foundational donor. The mission then — and now — was to reach new audiences, particularly in the climate movement, by focusing not only on the many detriments of nuclear power, but also on the alternatives, such as renewable energy along with the link to nuclear weapons and the gross human rights violations all along the nuclear chain, in particular from uranium mining. These issues were and remain fundamental to Beyond Nuclear’s mission.
