SAME Teammates:

I am thrilled to report that at the 2019 Federal Small Business Conference, the SAME Board of Direction approved the 2025 SAME Strategic Plan! We will formally roll out the plan in the January-February 2020 issue of TME.

Since we introduced the 2020 SAME Strategic Plan in 2016, our Society has been focused on leading collaboration and bringing industry and government together to solve our nation's infrastructure-related challenges. The 2025 SAME Strategic Plan builds off the key lines of effort our members, partners, and stakeholders have shown they are passionate about, and, importantly, are critical areas where our contributions will directly benefit America's future.

Each of our five goals—Strengthening Industry-Government Engagement, Building and Sustaining Resilient Communities, Developing Leaders for the Profession, Enriching the STEM Pipeline for the Nation, and Preparing Veterans and Servicemembers for the A/E/C Industryis connected in some fashion to the National Security Strategy. SAME's service will make an impact!

A huge thanks to all those who engaged in developing the first strategic plan of our second century, especially Col. Sal Nodjomian, P.E., F.SAME, USAF (Ret.), and Col. Charlie Perham, USAF (Ret.), who led the Strategic Plan Task Force the last 12 months.

Deeds Not Words!

 FEATURED EVENT

Recapping #SAMESBC19 in Dallas

With more than 3,700 registrants and over 400 exhibitors the 2019 Federal Small Business Conference for the A/E/C Industry set records for engagement between industry and government at an SAME event. Each year since 2013, SBC has grown as the market research event providing networking and education to federal agencies and both large and small businesses.

Held Nov. 20-22 at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas, Texas, SBC serves a key role in helping the public and private sectors meet their requirements, which are significant right now. As Lt. Gen. Todd Semonite, P.E., USA, U.S. Army Chief of Engineers and Commanding General of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers remarked during the Executive Leaders Panel, the Corps of Engineers currently has a $59 billion program, its largest ever, and needs the capabilities and capacity that only industry can provide in order for it to delivery on its mission.

There is a significant amount of work and more to come, echoed Rear Adm. John Korka, P.E., CEC, USN, Commander, Naval Facilities Engineering Command, and Chief of Civil Engineers—but more importantly, he said, there is a sense of urgency. Delivering speed and agility in projects is crucial in this era of Great Power competition.

SBC opened with a keynote address by Matthew "Griff" Griffin, U.S. Army veteran and CEO of Combat Flip Flops, which manufactures its merchandise in war-torn countries as a way of promoting peace through trade.

Other highlights included the fourth annual CEO Roundtable, which examined Cost Estimating and how it can be improved to benefit industry and government, and the first-ever IGE Topics Discussion, where participants had the chance to talk with senior agency leaders in an informal setting about challenges facing the contracting community.

SBC also welcomed presentations by two senior government leaders: Robb Wong, Associate Administrator, Office of Contracting & Business Development, Small Business Administration, who discussed recent and pending changes to federal acquisition as they relate to small businesses; and The Honorable Lucian Niemeyer, Performing the Duties of Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Energy, Installations & Environment), who shared progress on ongoing initiatives within the Defense Department to improve project delivery and strengthen how the A/E/C community supports the warfighter.

Additionally, SBC featured the presentation of the 2019 SAME Small Business Awards. Congratulations to this year's honorees!

  • AECOM: Large Business Award for support to federal small business programs
  • American Engineers Inc.: Small Business Award for support to federal programs
  • Teri Williams, SBLO, The Haskell Company: Industry Small Business Advocate Award
  • Sally Clark, CPSM, AFG Group (Mid-Maryland Post): Post Small Business Liaison Officer Award

Photos from SBC will be available soon on SAME's flickr pageRelive the week as it happened on social media using #SAMESBC19 and #MySBJourney.

 SOCIETY NEWS & NOTES

Learn More about Post Centennial Celebrations

SAME will turn 100 in 2020. As part of our three-year Centennial Celebration (May 2018-May 2021), Posts have been asked to host local Centennial Celebrations to highlight the impact and the importance of Posts in their communities.

The intent of these events is not just to celebrate SAME’s 100th anniversary, but to lead collaboration in our profession by hosting a meaningful event that draws new partners, stakeholders, and members to the Post in order to increase engagement as we begin our second century of service.

Already, the Charleston Post, San Diego Post, and jointly the three Posts in the New England Region (shown below) have held local Centennial Celebrations!

Keys for Planning Post Centennial Celebrations

  • Gain participation from government and industry partners, stakeholders, and the local community by celebrating something they have done over the last 100 years.
  • Use your Fellows to make the event a success.
  • Make an existing event bigger and focus on bringing in new stakeholders. Many Posts are enhancing an event that they already host. Time is the coin of the realm!
  • All Posts should have a Centennial Coordinator  now in place to work with the national Centennial Task Force, which is chaired by Dave Newkirk, Northwest Regional Vice President. Contact your coordinator for locally specific questions.

For more information, including upcoming local Post Centennial events and a list of Post Centennial Coordinators, visit www.same.org/post-celebrations.

Sprinting to our Second Century: An Interview with SAME President Buddy Barnes

What do you see as the greatest areas where SAME can make an impact as we begin our next 100 years?

BARNES: "We must lead collaboration among military, government, industry, and academia to develop multi-disciplined solutions to national security infrastructure challenges.

Our members are committed to service. We are the perfect ones to bring everyone together. Our nation will continue to face challenges over the next 100 years—challenges we know already and challenges we have no idea about yet. We need to remain engaged through SAME to ensure our profession is prepared to answer the call, just as the founders of this Society established this organization to help do 100 years ago.

The Centennial Kickoff Celebration at the 2020 JETC in Washington, D.C., will be a tremendous opportunity for us to show we are truly embracing our role as the multi-disciplined integrator of military, public, private, and academic national infrastructure-related capabilities to produce viable solutions for America’s national security."
