SAME Teammates:

Thanks to all the volunteer leaders from 76 Posts and all 17 Regions who attended the Post Leaders Workshop this month in Florida. They took away great tools to help their Posts increase member participation—the number one priority as SAME closes in on its Centennial in 2020.

Ask them what they learned: chances are there are tons of great opportunities out there at the national and local levels that will get you excited to do "Just One More"!

 REAL TiME PODCAST

Return of the Real TiME Podcast

This summer, SAME Executive Director Joe Schroedel was back interviewing Society members for the Real TiME Podcast while out visiting Posts.

Nicole Gunyon is Director of the new SAME/Scott AFB STEM Camp, which was hosted by the Scott Field Post for the first time in July at Scott AFB in Illinois. Steven Herrera is President of the Sacramento Post. In this episode, live from the Sacramento Post Sustaining Members Forum at Travis AFB, Steven touches on how he first joined SAME, the feat of all-volunteer teams pulling large events together, and the various types of programs and initiatives the Post's members participate in that give back to the community.

Recapping Post Leaders Workshop

The 2018 Post Leaders Workshop was held Aug. 19-21 in Bonita Springs, Fla. This year's workshop welcomed more than 160 participants from over 75 Posts and all 17 Regions.

Attendees engaged with SAME national leaders and staff; gained insights on association management from Mark Levin, an expert in nonprofit training; participated in team building activities; heard from fellow Society members who are leaders in areas such as STEM outreach, veteran transition support, international involvment; and leader development; and were provided details on numerous types of opportunities where members can be more active as we push towards SAME's Centennial.

Be sure to ask those who attended from your Post to give you all the details on how you can be a part of the Run to 2020 & Beyond!

Owners Forum Looks at Project Delivery

This spring, SAME and DBIA held the third annual Federal Owners Forum on project delivery, with 22 representatives from 13 agencies participating: Architect of the Capitol; Department of Veterans Affairs; Department of Transportation; Federal Bureau of Investigation; Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers; National Aeronautics & Space Administration; General Services Administration; Naval Facilities Engineering Command; National Security Agency; U.S. Air Force; U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; U.S. Coast Guard; and U.S. Customs & Border Protection

The "Federal Owners Forum Report" is now available online.

Breakout sessions covered the Contractor Performance Assessment Reporting System; project risk areas; and challenges in government agencies attracting/retaining talent. Additionally, there was a presentation from two researchers involved in the 2015 study "Maximizing Success in Integrated Projects: An Owners’ Guide," which was published by The Charles Pankow Foundation and the Construction Industry Institute.

Following the presentation, participants then broke into small groups for discussions on project success. The groups each used a different sample project to simulate the types of decision-making involved when choosing either design-build or design-bid-build, and the challenges that might occur with both.

10/31/2018: Where Will You Be? By Lori Revely, Guest Contributor

"Personally, I’ve grown so much since joining the Society of American Military Engineers almost five years ago. Being surrounded by people who want each other to succeed and lift one another up in such a positive environment, how can you not grow? I’m more confident. I have a better career with an amazing group of people where the sky is the limit. I’ve made wonderful, lifelong friends from all over the country, and have developed solid relationships with business partners, teaming partners, and clients."  continue reading...

It's Never Too Early to Begin By Jeff Duguid, Guest Contributor

"The first question any plan should answer: What is your goal for attending? The top answer for most people is networking. If this is yours, develop a list of firms or individuals you would like to meet. Once you have that list, then start reaching out to them, introduce yourself, and set a time to meet at the conference. You may find that many people plan their conference schedules ahead of time and are already booked. But chances are, they haven’t planned breakfast!"  continue reading...

Don't Show Up and Throw Up! By Jeff Duguid, Guest Contributor

"Do you remember how exciting it was when your firm moved into its new office? Do you remember how much time was spent on planning the details to make sure the lobby had an inviting and welcoming look and feel? Even in the humblest of offices, the lobby is always clean, tidy and free of obstacles that may block clients and guests from entering and spending time with you. Why then do so many exhibitors take the exact opposite approach when exhibiting?" continue reading...
