Strengthening Capabilities in Europe

More than 300 professionals from government and industry convened in Stuttgart, Germany, for the 2017 SAME European Region Engineer Capabilities Workshop. The event was co-located with the EUCOM and AFRICOM Command Engineers Workshop, and drew a number of military representatives from the combatant commands. In particular, the sessions were of a highly technical nature as SAME works to bring together the right people and the right solutions to support joint engineering needs overseas, including U.S. forces and NATO.

The Keynote Address was given by Brig. Gen. Roy Agustin, F.SAME, USAF, the Director of Logistics, Engineering & Force Protection, HQ U.S. Air Forces in Europe and U.S. Air Forces Africa. There was great participation of Society leaders—including SAME President Capt. Mike Blount, F.SAME, USN (Ret.), Col. Blair Schantz, USA (Ret.), Chair of the International Committee, Rich Stump, Pacific RVP, and all of the European Region and Post leaders.

  COMMITTEE & COUNCIL HAPPENINGS

New SAME National Resilience Committee

Over the last few weeks SAME's new Resilience Committee has taken off! Helped in part by the review of almost 60 Resilience Streamer submissions, the committee is learning much more about the many great programs that are already underway at local Posts.

SAME Executive Director Joe Schroedel recently engaged Committee Chair, Jim Hagan, and Vice Chair, Gary Gordon, on plans for the new committee. Listen to the podcast, and find out about the great initiatives that will soon be taking flight!

Currently, the Resilience Committee is developing its core mission and vision as well as finalizing its organizational structure. This process includes the migration of the good work accomplished in recent years by the former TISP Council and the Cybersecurity Task Force. Plans include holding a locally-focused critical infrastructure workshop in late April, the outcome of which will outline a foundation for local Post Resilience Programs. A follow-up meeting to discuss those outcomes further will be held at JETC this May as well as two education tracks dedicated to Resilience and Cybersecurity.

One other exciting feature of the new committee is the development of a knowledge management system. This system will not only be a clearinghouse for all of the Committee’s program and activities, but it will also include similar resilience-related programs that are part of other SAME National Committees. These synergies will provide members a “one-stop-shop” for information on Resilience articles, presentations/webinars, Post programs, and partnerships.

The Resilience Committee is off to a great start and has great potential value to both SAME membership and the industry in which we serve. For more information, visit the Resilience Committee webpage or contact Jim Hagan, F.SAME at 847-842-9120.
