SAME Teammates:

As we head into the homestretch of 2022, I want to highlight a few opportunities with key dates on the calendar.

First, in recognition of Giving Tuesday, please consider supporting the SAME Foundation and make a donation to foster engineering leadership for our nation. Our Foundation is supporting our Society—and investing in developing the engineering leaders of today and tomorrow.

Second, applications for the SAME Leader Development Program are due Dec. 7. This is truly best-in-class program for aspiring leaders, both with member companies and the uniformed services. About half of each class the last three years has been active duty. The program offers the type of joint training and development that makes SAME so unique.

Third, nominations for President-Elect, National Vice President, and Elected Director are due Dec. 15. SAME is a volunteer-led organization...and we are looking for members who are ready to lead at the national level! You can nominate a candidate or self-nominate.

Lastly, on behalf of the National Leadership Team I want to say thanks for your support of SAME and your involvement in our Posts, COIs, and all of our events, including the record-breaking attendance earlier this month at SBC in Nashville. This has been another tremendous year of impact across SAME, and it is because of the selfless service, technical expertise, and continued engagement of you, our members.

Deeds Not Words!

Joe Schroedel, Executive Director

Giving Tuesday: Support the SAME Foundation

In celebration of Giving Tuesday, please consider making a generous contribution to the SAME Foundation's 2022 annual appeal, and help provide funding to support signature leader development efforts including the SAME Leader Development Program, the Camps Mentoring Program, and the new Indigenous STEM Program.

Yes, I Want to Donate

This year, the SAME Foundation's fundraiser is a fun competition to drive donations in support of the engineering leaders of the future: the Young Professionals/Fellows Challenge!

And you don't have to be a Fellow or Young Professional to participate...you just have to care about investing in the engineering leaders of tomorrow (for the record, currently, the Fellows are winning!)

In fact, if the Society raises $500,000 by Dec. 31, 2022, there are donors standing by who have agreed to each match $5,000, with the goal of reaching $1 million! Let's unlock their contributions by donating to the SAME Foundation today!

National Leadership Nominations Due by Dec. 15

Nominations for SAME President-Elect, Vice President, and Elected Director are now due Dec. 15. 2022, to allow time for individuals to get their nomination packets submitted.

SAME is committed to finding volunteer leaders who are steeped in a range of experiences and who have a solid foundation of proven Post-level achievement. Importantly, the Society is looking for members who want to be engaged at the national level and help drive SAME forward in its second century.

For more information, visit www.same.org/leadership-nominations.

Applications for the Next SAME Leader Development Program Class Due by Dec. 7

SAME’s Leader Development Program is looking for highly motivated, mid-career professionals to apply to join the 2023-2024 class, which will begin in May 2023.

Applications must be submitted through the online portal by Dec. 7, 2022.

Through the year-long program of training, study, and discussion, participants explore individual strengths, team dynamics, and discover their potential as leaders.

As part of the program, participants will complete a utilization project that supports or advances a key aspect of the 2025 SAME Strategic Plan. The Leader Development Program is financially supported by the SAME Foundation.

SAME Welcomes New Strategic Partner

In October, SAME signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Sustainable Remediation Forum (SURF).

SURF is a nonprofit dedicated to maximizing the overall environmental, societal, and economic benefits from remediating degraded environmental conditions by advancing the science and application of sustainable remediation, developing best practices, exchanging professional knowledge, and providing education and outreach.

SAME intends to focus the strategic partnership on the exchange of professional knowledge, primarily through the Environmental COI and Resilience COI.

Travels with the SAME President

SAME National President Cindy Lincicome, F.SAME, has had a busy fall—traveling to a number of SAME events, including most recently visiting with the Inland Empire Post on Nov. 17 (see photo).

And it isn't slowing down! Coming up Dec. 1, she will be attending the USACE Great Lakes & Ohio River Division Industry Day in Covington, Ky. If you are making the event part of your schedule, make sure to say hello to SAME's President!

Cindy also will be visiting the Savannah Post on Dec. 5; the Jacksonville Post on Dec. 7; the Los Angeles Post on Dec. 10 for its Holiday Event; and in January 2023, the San Antonio Post to meet with its Leadership Lab.

Hosted by Small Business Community of Interest | January 10 at 12:00 PM ET

On Jan. 1, 2023, the Small Business Administration will take over the certification responsibilities from the Department of Veterans Affairs Center for veteran enterprises, which means that all self-certified SDVOSBs who are not already CVE certified will have to go through the new process in order to maintain any current awarded contracts that were set aside for SDVOSBs outside of any CVE requirement from an agency. Up to 75 percent of current SDVOSBs are self-certified and have not gone through the CVE process. This webinar will discuss the impacts of this move and the way ahead for both CVE and non-CVE certified SDVOSBs.

TME Looks Back: Women Making History

As Cindy Lincicome, F.SAME, the third woman to serve as Society President, passes the mid-point of her tenure, we look back to Women's History Month earlier this year, and an article posted on the SAME blog that highlights some of the influential female leaders in SAME and military engineering during our history.

From its founding in 1920, SAME welcomed all who were dedicated to the national defense. Still, the composition of the military, coupled with the historical challenges facing women who wished to pursue A/E/C professions, meant that at the time the vast majority of members were men.

Over the next 100 years, however, SAME would see its share of women members grow to about 18 percent in 2017–a higher percentage than the uniformed services and on par with representation in the A/E/C industry. However, as then-SAME National President Capt. Michael Blount, USN (Ret.), wrote, “we are still not properly represented by 51 percent of the population!” Ongoing initiatives to level the playing field and find those who might not “self-advocate” to elevate them into positions of leadership continue to this day, in efforts to continuously increase the Society’s diversity of thought.
