SAME Teammates:

SAME continues to develop new programs and resources to provide value to our entire membership. That includes supporting the industry-government engagement issues that matter to you, and your agency or company. Just last week, I was fortunate to moderate an excellent IGE Panel hosted by the Atlanta Post on the issue of size standards in the A/E/C industry. We had representatives from a small business, a mid-size business, and the Small Business Administration. It was a vibrant conversation—and very likely just the start of a larger discussion on this issue, which is key to many of our Sustaining Members.

Another area we are investing in is our Communities of Interest. COIs are an incredible pool of technical expertise and a forum where our members can engage directly with others in their professional discipline, such as facility asset management, environmental, resilience, architecture, and more.

Next month, as one of the ways we are working to deliver more value through COIs, we are launching tailored sub-editions of the Real TiME newsletter. We're starting with Environmental, Small Business, Enlisted and Facility Asset Management. If you are signed up to be part of one of those COIs, you will get access to this new monthly resource, which includes industry news and trends as well as updates from the COI. Want to make sure that you get it? Visit your SAME member account and join the COIs of your choice!

As we move ahead in 2021 and beyond, widening the impact of our COIs and helping advance key industry-government engagement issues will become a bigger and bigger emphasis at the national level. We look forward to sharing this journey with you! Thanks for your continued service to our nation, our profession, and SAME.

Look forward to "seeing" you during Virtual JETC in May!

Deeds Not Words!

A Century of Volunteers Creating Value

Volunteers have been the backbone of the Society since its founding in 1920. Whether it is by inspiring and providing resources for youth to pursue STEM careers, mentoring young professionals, or giving back to their communities through service projects, volunteers make up the lifeblood of SAME. During 2021 National Volunteers Week, we look back at the countless volunteers who have donated their time and resources over the last 100 years of the Society’s history and made a lasting impact on SAME’s efforts to help secure America’s future, together.

    Recapping Virtual Capital Week 2021

SAME’s 2021 Virtual Capital Week brought more than 900 attendees (a record for the event!) together for five days of strategic discussions, market research, and networking opportunities.

The program was highlighted by “fireside chats” with the Engineering Chiefs from the Air Force, Army, and Navy as well as the Department of Veterans Affairs, who each provided updates on where their agencies are focused in terms of engineering and construction priorities, funding projections, and how they are aligning to support the interest-areas of the new administration.

Welcome SAME's 2021-2022 Leader Development Program Class

Congratulations to the 20 newly selected members of the 2021-2022 SAME Leader Development Program. Financially supported by the SAME Foundation, this national program is designed to identify and cultivate talent from within the Society to support the development of the next generation of military, government, and industry leaders and help meet the crucial leadership needs of the country and the profession.

Developing leaders is a central component of the 2025 SAME Strategic Plan, which outlines in Goal 3: Develop Leaders for the Profession, that SAME will “lead efforts to enhance leadership development and cultivate talent necessary to address the nation’s grand challenges; ensure the enduring stewardship of the A/E/C profession.”

Post Best Practices: Working Together to Deliver Value

The past year has been one of disruption and rethought plans, of pivoting and re-tooling, of patience and perseverance. For SAME’s Posts, the need for social distancing due to the coronavirus meant that in-person meetings and networking events needed to shift to virtual. While this opened up some new possibilities, it was not without its challenges.

The seven Posts of the California Region (Inland Empire, Los Angeles, Orange County, Oxnard-Ventura, Sacramento, San Diego, and San Francisco) embraced the Society’s positive approach to the pandemic, taking advantage of the virtual environment to widen their impact.

    Removing Barriers to Hiring Veterans

Many veterans of this generation, particularly younger ones, have struggled to find jobs when they leave service. Some of these struggles can be attributed to the fact that many of these young men and women are leaving service with disabilities. As a conservative estimate, over 4 million veterans live out the rest of their lives with visible or invisible disabilities connected to their service.
