If you're asking how to get specific items, then this is how.

If you haven't entered a shop yet, you can save before you go into it. If the shop doesn't have an item you want/need, just exit to the menu and click continue. You should be able to go into the shop and see different items. If the shop keeps showing the same items, move to any empty spot, save, and enter the shop. This is how I get stuff for some of my builds. You can do the same with secret rooms, but it won't change the event.

I took inspiration (again) for a cleaver+shield spirit build. All credit goes to Fifthist. The whole build I plan to do is not done yet, but this is what I have so far. 

3 of my cleavers have +1 rage, and 8 of them have 1 golden whetstone (+25% to the base damage)

I have 6 Chef's Hats (+300% damage to cleavers)

The duct tape passes on the effects of the Chef's Hats and the Gemstone Heart, so each cleaver heals.

Relics are pretty self-explanatory. Candle for getting rid of enemy effects, Shield Spirit to use all my cleavers, and the Belt of Knives to increase the damage of every cleaver by +3.

So far, I have not needed more than 5 energy (the Emerald Bracelet), and every battle has ended with only 1-3.
