Bitwise Bitcoin ETF (BITB)

Bitwise (BITB) has published their ETF's holding address, showing proof of reserves to the world. This marks a huge step in financial transparency, where we can verify an organization's finances without relying on a 3rd party or government regulator.

With the ETF race being so competitive, differentiating themselves by being more transparent with their holdings will likely swing additional market share towards them.

Interestingly, the address is not Bech32 or multisig, but a legacy address created using Coinbase's MPC system. MPC is similar to multisig as it requires multiple parties to sign a transaction, but instead of multiple private keys, one key is divided up between parties. Read more about MPC here

Hello Ken,

Your mnemonic phrase is the seed that creates all the private keys for your account. Blockpath is a watch-only block explorer service, we don't accept private keys or seeds. It is better that you just use your xpub or address for searching for your transactions.

Hey, I appreciate the request. I've been considering adding Ethereum support for a few years, but so far have not because of the difficulties of incorporating their chain into our system.

A large reason that makes it difficult are the ERC-20 transactions, that can greatly complicate any accounting that we would have to do. We could start with simple ETH transfers, but eventually the accounting logic would have to expand to support USDT and the thousands of other coins, and trying to fit that into QuickBooks' very rigid structure would be very difficult. We already had to make several awkward compromises when getting Bitcoin's transactions to fit into QuickBooks' system...

Every time I start to work on ETH, it looks like at least 6 months of work, and so far I don't believe there is enough of a user demand to make it worthwhile.

Finally, I believe in the long run only one chain will be dominantly used, and at the moment I'm betting it will be Bitcoin. If that changes I will get to work on an ETH sync.

If any other users want to voice their opinion in favor of an Ethereum sync, please let me know.

QuickBooks Guide: How to Audit to Check for Errors

The audit feature is an additional scan that can be used after a reconciliation scan to further check for errors in your QuickBooks account data. An audit is not usually necessary if your account's balance and transactions were all correct in the reconcile, but if you had an incorrect balance it can be extremely useful to find the source of errors.

The Difference between Reconcile and Audit:

A reconcile gathers all transactions from the Bitcoin blockchain, and then checks that those transactions exist in your QuickBooks account and that the balances are correct. This is the most useful for the majority of situations where you just need to sync in any missing transactions.

An audit retrieves all transactions in your selected QuickBooks account, and then performs a series of verifications on them to ensure they are correct. We check that the transactions exist on the blockchain, there are no partial transactions missing, Blockpath created them, and they have not been modified since. An audit can find stubborn unwanted transactions that QuickBooks occasionally decides to make, like a "balance correction" to set the balance to 0 when deleting an account.

How to Run

Start by running a normal reconcile from the Integrations Tab in your Blockpath wallet. After that has finished, you will be offered to run an audit.

Results

The results table will alert you if we found any suspicious transactions. As this tool is still being developed, it make raise a false alert on some transactions.

Audit Results

If you see a transaction that you want to investigate or delete, copy the QuickBooks ID from the row. This is an ID assigned to a particular transaction by QuickBooks, and it is only visible to the user in the URL on their website.

To see your transaction, first open a transaction of a similar type in QuickBooks. If your transaction is a Payment, open another Payment in your QuickBooks Online account. Next, look up to the URL bar and find the ID number, and replace it with the one you copied.

For example, a Payment transaction's URL may look like this:

https://app.qbo.intuit.com/app/recvpayment?txnId=1325

Replace the "1325" with your new ID number to see your transaction.

Hello,

Currently our software can only import transactions from on-chain transactions. However, with the rise of off-chain transactions (Lightning Network), we are investigating allowing importing of an excel sheet of transactions into QuickBooks.

The transaction types we use are Sales Receipt OR Invoice+Payment for incoming transactions, and Journal Entry for outgoing payments (since we automatically calculate capital gains within QuickBooks for you!).

When developing the service we looked into using Bitcoin as an inventory stock item, but there were many issues with it that I don't recall now. We use Bitcoin as a foreign currency using the multicurrency abilities of QuickBooks.

To support the accounting of users with very large transaction history, Blockpath now offers unlimited transaction exports to Excel format. Just search for your addresses as usual, and use the export icon located above the transaction list on the right-hand side, or access the export from the Apps page.

To become a Premium User, log in and select "Top-Up Premium" from the top right user dropdown menu.

QuickBooks Guide: How to Account for Mining Income

We will create a QuickBooks customer, and a custom rule for incoming payments, and then we will observe how this affects the accounting.

Create Mining Customer

QuickBooks requires us to attach a customer to any received payment transactions. Follow this guide to create a QuickBooks customer and sync them into Blockpath. Give the customer any recognizable name you would like.

Create Custom Payment Rule

Following this guide, we will create a Blockpath rule that is automatically applied when you receive a Bitcoin payment. We will have it create a Sales Receipt in QuickBooks, since an invoice is not necessary when being paid immediately. Additionally, we will use the above created customer to be the source of the funds. Drag the new rule to be above the default rule so that the higher priority will have it be applied to all incoming payments.
