Donor Spotlight: Kate Harslem at The KLE Foundation

The KLE Foundation supports quality education for motivated students in underserved, economically disadvantaged communities by expanding access to college pathways and long-term academic success. Through its partnership with Breakthrough, the Foundation is helping create opportunities for students — particularly those who will be the first in their families to earn a college degree.

The Foundation’s philanthropic philosophy is deeply rooted in family legacy and shared values across generations. Building on the giving priorities of her parents, Executive Director Kate Harslem continues a tradition of supporting education while also responding to growing challenges around affordability and access.

“As a college graduate, I believe I have an obligation to help today’s students achieve a post-secondary degree or certificate,” she shared. “In today’s economy, a fulfilling and successful life has become increasingly dependent on it.”

She also emphasized that while her approach to giving reflects her family’s values, the needs facing today’s students have grown more complex.

“My approach to philanthropy is the same as my parents’,” she said, “but affordability and access to a quality education has become more challenging. With the KLE Foundation, we hope to provide the same opportunities we have had to all students.”

By supporting research-based, data-driven programs with proven outcomes for first-generation college students, the KLE Foundation is helping ensure more students have the support, resources, and guidance needed to persist through college and pursue meaningful careers.

We are deeply grateful to the KLE Foundation for their partnership and vision. Together, we are building pathways to opportunity — and ensuring that every student who aspires to earn a postsecondary credential has the support to make it possible.

Donor Spotlight: Elle Moody at Moody Foundation

For generations, the Moody Foundation has invested in strengthening communities across Texas — and today, that legacy continues through deep, intentional investment in expanding access to postsecondary success for students in Central Texas.

As a Pathways to Opportunity investor, the Foundation is helping Breakthrough scale a proven model that increases college access, persistence, and career readiness. We spoke with Elle Moody, Senior Vice President of Grants and Chief Communications Officer, about what drives this investment, the power of sustained philanthropy, and the future she hopes to help build.

Q&A with Elle

What inspired the Moody Foundation to support Breakthrough and become a Pathways to Opportunity Investor?

The Moody Foundation is committed to transforming education in Texas by providing support where the need is greatest and the potential impact is strongest. Breakthrough’s mission and proven results align squarely with that commitment, and we are proud to support the growth of a model that is changing students’ trajectories across Central Texas.

What part of Breakthrough’s mission feels most meaningful to you?

Breakthrough’s emphasis on mutual commitment stands out. Students and families are active partners in the work, which builds ownership, confidence, and long-term momentum. That approach doesn’t just open doors — it helps students walk through them prepared to succeed.

What impact do you hope your investment will have on students’ college and career success?

We have seen Breakthrough significantly increase college access and persistence for Central Texas students. Our hope is that our giving allows that impact to scale — reaching hundreds, and ultimately thousands, more students until postsecondary success is within reach for every student who seeks it.

How does your giving to Breakthrough align with your hopes for a more equitable Central Texas?

Breakthrough addresses many of the invisible barriers that limit postsecondary success, particularly for first-generation college students. By providing institutional knowledge, social capital, and sustained guidance, Breakthrough helps ensure that success is not determined by zip code or family background.

On Next-Generation Philanthropy

Why is it important for the next generation of philanthropists to step up — especially now?

Education change does not happen overnight. Breakthrough’s long-term commitment to students requires equally sustained philanthropic support. It is essential that the next generation of philanthropists carries this work forward so programs with proven impact can remain strong, stable, and focused on student success.

What is your philosophy when it comes to philanthropy and giving back?

I see philanthropy as an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. When done thoughtfully, giving can be transformative both for individuals and entire communities. We support initiatives where philanthropy can drive real results in areas of deepest need. Education is especially powerful because its impact extends far beyond one individual, shaping families and future generations.

How does your approach build on the Foundation’s legacy?

The Moody Foundation is one of the longest-operating family foundations in the state, guided across generations by a shared commitment to benefiting Texans. Building on a deep history of education giving, the current generation has sharpened that focus by committing $1 billion over 20 years to transform Texas education — pairing legacy values with long-term, outcomes-driven investment.

What do you hope your contributions help make possible for the future?

Our education strategy focuses on two pivotal moments: early learning and postsecondary success. By investing at the beginning of students’ educational journeys and again as they launch into careers, we aim to create lasting pathways to opportunity and long-term success for Texas students.

We are deeply grateful to the Moody Foundation for their partnership and vision. Together, we are building pathways to opportunity — and ensuring that every student who aspires to earn a postsecondary credential has the support to make it possible.

My name is Natalie and I will be attending LASA High School as a freshman this school year. Unfortunately, my middle school years have come to an end. While I am excited for High School, I can’t help but feel a bittersweet feeling as I reflect on the past 3 years. I am proud to say that Breakthrough was a part of those 3 middle school years, and will be for the next few years as well. These past summers have been some of the most life-changing summers of my life, and I would like to share my experience thus far to give you all some insight of my journey with this program.

The first time I heard about Breakthrough was in Elementary. I would hear my mom tell my older brother that it was time to wake up for Breakthrough, or ask him questions concerning the program. I didn’t understand what it was at first, and it was just a name to me. But I would tag along to events. Once I got to Middle School, I understood why my brother joined. In sixth grade, I remember my grade level being called into the cafeteria for a presentation. When I saw that it was Breakthrough presenting, I was excited. I was already familiar with what it was thanks to my brother, but the presentation made my understanding of it more clear. By the end of it, I was sold. The mission of this program was so inspiring to me, and I thought it would be beneficial for my future, so I, alongside some friends, signed up for the program.

My first summer at Breakthrough will always be my favorite and the most memorable. I remember mainly sticking alongside my friend since I didn’t know anyone there. I recognized a few of the older kids from my school, but back then the upperclassmen were scary to me. Initially, I found the whole thing a bit weird. I mean, cheers at 8:30 in the morning? I need at least ’till 10 AM to have that kind of energy. But as the days went on, I got used to it, and even memorized the cheers. Slowly, but surely, I opened up and grew to enjoy the year. I met some of my closest friends that summer, and met amazing teaching fellows who made me feel more confident in the upcoming school year.

Fast-forward to the summer of 7th grade. I was ecstatic to start another fun Breakthrough summer. Although I was upset that some of the AmeriCorps Summer Teaching Fellows from last year were not coming back, I was glad to have met the new ones, since they were just as cool. I made more awesome friends, and even overcame my initial fear of the older kids in my algebra class, where I would work alongside them. This year, I can definitely say I am one of the most energetic during morning attendance. I realized that being enthusiastic isn’t something to be embarrassed of, but something to be proud of. I feel like it helps the younger kids realize that it’s okay to shout and do the cheers.

It came to me that I was now considered one of the older kids, and from experience I realize the younger kids look up to those older than them. I want them to realize that it’s okay to be yourself, and if it means yelling as early as 8:30 in the morning for them to see, I’ll do it. I want to inspire the others to make the most of the summers, because they fly by really quickly. I am pleasantly surprised by my transformation from shy and awkward, to outgoing and less awkward than before. And it is thanks to all the amazing people I met throughout the years that I am who I am today.

Joining Breakthrough was definitely one of the best decisions I’ve made. Not only does it give a head start into what is expected of the next school year, but it provides a safe space where students and teaching fellows alike can discover themselves, connect through mutual interests, and express themselves.

I enjoy how no matter how unappealing a topic can be, the teachers find a way to make it fun and engaging for the students. From projects, to friendly competitions, I find myself and others actively participating. As I transition into High School, I look back and realize how supporting Breakthrough and everyone involved is. I know they will always have my back. I intend on taking on High School with a new-found confidence in my abilities thanks to everyone who has believed in me. While I understand it might not be the easiest journey, I know I’ll have my friends, advisors, and teaching fellows to support me, which makes the idea of a new environment and school less intimidating. I can’t wait to attend LASA and make new friends, more memories, and overall continue working my way up to become a first generation college graduate.

Under the guidance of seasoned teaching professionals, Americorps Summer Teaching Fellows teach English, math, social studies, or science to classes of ten to twelve middle school students. This summer experience is more summer camp than summer school, designed to make learning meaningful and fun!

“What started as an obligation turned into something I looked forward to every summer,” – Jocelyn, a Breakthrough Student and 2025 AmeriCorps Summer Teaching Fellow.

During National Mentorship Month, we are reminded of how transformative our work can be. Students enter our program uncertain of its purpose, leave not wanting it to end, and, by the time they are high school graduates, some even return as Summer Teaching Fellows, just like Jocelyn. This past summer, 35% of our Teaching Fellows were also Breakthrough students!

“My love for the Breakthrough program and community has brought me here. This summer is my first year as a Teaching Fellow, and I am beyond amazed by the impact Breakthrough continues to bring. This summer, I have gotten the opportunity to witness how much students are growing academically and as students… Knowing that I am a part of these students’ summer and helping start their journeys fills me with joy.”

Student and Jocelyn

“Many of the teachers (AmeriCorps Teaching Fellows) tell us that they were students in this program and that the program helped them a lot in getting an internship and getting into college.” – Student

Being a Summer Teaching Fellow is the first impression our students receive here at Breakthrough and shapes their educational journey. Fellows create trust for our entire organization, leading students to be eager to learn, determined to achieve their postsecondary goals, and open to the many possibilities their futures offer.

Jocelyn is now in her first year at the University of Texas at Austin pursuing a major in Public Health. Although her path after graduation remains uncertain, Jocelyn hopes to use her education to give back to her community.

“Breakthrough is here to not only help build your path towards college but also empower young students to take action in what they are most passionate about.”

Be a part of this great community and apply to become an AmeriCorps Summer Teaching Fellow by February 26th, 2026. You’ll experience firsthand the impact you have on the personal growth of middle school-age students.

]]>

My name is Da’Keona Jones, an Austin native through and through. I am a proud first-generation college graduate from Texas State University. I’m here to tell you how Breakthrough shined the light on doors my family and I had yet to discover.

A bit about me: I have 2 brothers, 1 sister, and a mother who played no games. I was a loud, proud, and expressive child. My mom has always been my biggest supporter who made sure we stayed focused. She didn’t just say “dream big” — she prays for you and then makes sure you’re equipped to do something about it.

Every summer felt the same. Until one day my mom was like “Yall not sitting in this house all summer. You need to find something to do.”

That’s when I first heard about Breakthrough. They came to my elementary school in Manor, talking about this summer program that was supposed to be “cool” and “interactive.” To be honest, as a fifth grader, I wasn’t all there — but I was listening and I remember thinking, “Okay, sounds fun… for somebody else.” Because I definitely wasn’t trying to go back to school in the summer.

Despite my initial thoughts, I showed up for that first summer at Breakthrough. Here I was a fresh middle schooler trying to figure out what was going on. Maybe it was seeing all these new students across Manor ISD who wanted to go to college just like me, but something just clicked.

Maybe it was English class and I remember my teacher Ms. Katie encouraging me in my writing . At the time I was over all her critical questions about my story – like what about this character, and their backstory. Truth is she

Had helped me find my love for storytelling. My masterpiece was about a girl named Promise. My mom still has that story to this day.

I also learned a lot in all my other classes – math, science, social studies, and really found how to directly and clearly express my voice. Breakthrough showed me what education could be and that I could create something powerful with clear guidance. Breakthrough was like PBS Kids, you know, keeping you entertained while mom’s at work but low key great educational learning!

After all the help I got from Breakthrough in my middle school summers and during the school year, I was set up for success. At Manor Senior High School, the classes felt like light work. I even received my associates degree before even graduating high school because I was taking dual credit classes at ACC, for free.

Breakthrough didn’t just give me a checklist — they gave me a guide, a plan, a hand, and the confidence to follow through. I applied to over ten colleges and got accepted to several — UT, Texas State, UNT, UTSA, St. Edward’s and more. But in the end, I chose Texas State. Breakthrough literally held my hand through it all.

Even in college, Breakthrough was still showing me doors. It wasn’t easy.

Coming from a home packed with personality to an empty dorm room was challenging in many ways. Like many others, being away from home for the first time was uncomfortable but for me this was different. I left what I knew to be home to be surrounded by complete strangers. I felt the pressures of being alone and having doubts about where I was going.

Being at Texas State took a toll on me … has anyone else here walked up the hills and stairs of Texas State everyday? Come back to me when you do – It’s a climb. Not to get too metaphorical, but it’s hard! I’d struggle up the hill to the Alkek Library to meet my advisor Claudia just to greet her out of breath.

I can’t tell you how helpful Breakthrough was for me. It wasn’t just the scholarships that created a full ride to college, internships that led to a career, or the strong connections built along the way that made me appreciate Breakthrough the most. It was that they were truly like family, they were my second biggest cheerleader – obviously my mommy is #1, but Breakthrough has always been right there for me.

I kept opening different doors, starting as a major in biology, then psychology. I kept going, one step at a time. I started building my resume. It’s now so good I call it my “sexy resume” — yes, I said sexy — because it’s that good! I earned my first paid internship through Breakthrough at the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, researching mental health challenges first-gen students face today. My second Breakthrough internship was at Accenture, learning about how to speak the language of the business and project management. I did research, wrote proposals and opened clinics – all of that before I even turned 21.

Just three years after high school—I walked the stage at Texas State University, earning my B.A. in Psychology and becoming the first in my family, four generations strong in Austin, to graduate from college. Debt free might I add.

I’m now proud to say I have a career in a field I didn’t even know existed growing up – I am a SAP Enterprise Resource Consultant at Accenture. Tell me that’s not amazing?

Breakthrough is the reason I’m equipped to walk into every opportunity with confidence and clarity. Breakthrough is a guide to show you the door of opportunity in life, not only how to find the door, but how to work the doorknob, which key to use, swing it wide open and step through.

It’s helped my entire family – my brother is a Breakthrough grad and my mom even went back to school. She’s now on her way to becoming a registered nurse. So when I hear that Breakthrough is expanding to serve 3,000 more students through its Pathways to Opportunity Campaign, I just think — that’s transformational. Because this program doesn’t just change individual lives — it changes an entire family forever.

]]>

My name is Jeremiah Thompson. Now, let’s all go on a journey together. Think back to that weird time called sixth grade. Do you remember that? I got a picture taken the moment Breakthrough came into my life in May 2013, and I was an awkward, gangly, insecure 6th grader. I was 11, attending my first Breakthrough event, an orientation session for all new students and families. My mom and I were blown away at what was shared with us – a 12-year promise to help me achieve my dreams.

Fast forward 7 years, and I was standing in front of the UT Tower as a high school graduate, celebrating that I will soon go off to college. Now, Breakthrough didn’t make me handsome like you see here, but it was a huge part of my life, so big that I call Breakthrough my second mom.

So how did this program help that younger Jeremiah? I’d start with the middle school summer program. Every day for four straight summers, I’d arrive early in the morning to people screaming at me- in happiness not in anger, I promise. Breakthrough staff and summer teachers were there cheering and clapping and, mind you, it’s like 7 AM at this point. Who does that?! They were getting up for us – every day – and that made us want to get up for them. I loved it, loved the energy, and…it was hard work. We studied math, reading, science, and more. I felt proud walking back into my middle school in the fall, saying to other students, “I’ve been grinding all summer, what have y’all been doing?”

I also got to meet my Breakthrough advisors. One in particular, Dorothy Vasquez. I first met Dorothy in middle school. My friends and I were a bit…confident, is the word I’d use. One day when we kept talking over other people, Dorothy paused and told us to remember our expectations. Essentially to knock it off. My friend said, “That’s mean!” Dorothy replied, and I’ll never forget it, “Sweetheart I’m not mean, I’m assertive and I care about you and every student here.” So, when I say Breakthrough is like a second mom, I mean it – sometimes setting boundaries, always caring, and just so happens to be super knowledgeable about college.

In high school I started to feel a lot of pressure. I’m not just the first in my family to aspire for college, I have four younger brothers and sisters who look up to me. Around that time, my real-life mom, Diana, became ill with a thyroid disease. She’s my whole world and the most loving, kind person in history. That’s when our family joke developed: “Let’s just ask Breakthrough!’ To this day, my mom will respond to any question I have about college, career, and life, “Call Breakthrough, call them now!”

In high school I saw Dorothy and other Breakthrough staff at our many after school workshops. We worked together like a family through everything from tutoring to college essays. My anxiety diminished, the pressure became more manageable, and I somehow was able to submit 15 applications to college.

Time for a fun fact: college is hard! My first semester dragged me and beat me up! I mean I lost my breath a couple times my first semester! But the biggest challenge was isolation. I left all my friends behind, started brand new. Breakthrough was there once again. My mom – and my Breakthrough moms – have been there to surround me with love and knowledge.

Through Breakthrough, I also had opportunities to explore my passions, especially at the intersection of education and business. As a Breakthrough Summer Teaching Fellow, I got a real-world glimpse into the teaching profession working with younger Breakthrough students. Through the Breakthrough Internship Network, I interned in the Human Resources department at Silicon Labs and loved getting to connect with students through the university relations program. That’s when I realized: my true passion is developing people and helping them reach their goals.

I often wonder what my life would be like if I didn’t have Breakthrough. It would be a series of “what ifs.” What if I didn’t get good grades? What if I didn’t register for the right classes? What if I couldn’t handle the pressure of being the very first in my family to go to college, of being a role model for my younger siblings? What if I screw up? It’s not just about me, it’s about my family, my friends, my entire community. Breakthrough, like any good mom, has made those ‘what ifs’ turn into ‘I can do this.’ Having someone by my side who knows me, is wise, and yes, assertive, when I need them to be has been the greatest gift.

I am proud to share that I am a first-generation college graduate from the McCombs School of Business right here at UT Austin. I am still pushing forward, now earning my MBA at UT San Antonio, and I love my job at H-E-B. As the Internship and Bridges Program Coordinator, I help support designing curriculum, advocate for change, and help our interns and partners realize their vision for themselves and their career. I get to help others realize their dreams, just like Breakthrough helped me realize mine.

When I hear about the incredible Pathways to Opportunity Campaign, I’m excited that thousands more students will be able to find a home in the Breakthrough community. That more will be able to envision themselves going to college. That more will be able to defy expectations and realize their dreams. Thank you all for being here today and for listening to my perspective. You all, along with the Breakthrough students give me hope for a brighter future.

Our Most Ambitious Campaign Yet: Pathways to Opportunity https://breakthroughctx.org/our-most-ambitious-campaign-yet-pathways-to-opportunity/ https://breakthroughctx.org/our-most-ambitious-campaign-yet-pathways-to-opportunity/#respond Wed, 08 Oct 2025 17:20:23 +0000 https://breakthroughctx.org/?p=15182 The post Our Most Ambitious Campaign Yet: Pathways to Opportunity appeared first on Breakthrough Central Texas.

Dear Breakthrough Community,

On behalf of our Board of Trustees, campaign leadership, and staff, I am thrilled to announce a historic milestone for Breakthrough Central Texas: the public launch of our Pathways to Opportunity Campaign. Through this $30 million accelerator campaign, we will unlock the power of education and expand opportunity for thousands more Central Texas students – enrolling 3,000 new students, doubling the number of young people we serve, and tripling the number of first-generation college graduates.

Earlier this week, we gathered with community leaders, partners, and supporters at the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library and Museum to announce this bold vision—the most ambitious in Breakthrough’s 20+ year history. Together, we celebrated the progress we’ve already made, the generosity of so many who believe in our proven solution and support our students and their families.

We were honored to:

 • Hear Luci Baines Johnson, businesswoman, philanthropist, and daughter of President Johnson, reflect on her father’s legacy and the transformative power of education to lift generations out of poverty.
 • Be moved by Mayor Kirk Watson, a longtime supporter and son of a first-generation graduate, as he affirmed Breakthrough’s role in empowering students, strengthening our workforce, and building a more equitable Austin.
 • Celebrate Breakthrough alumnus Jeremiah Thompson, who shared his inspiring journey to The University of Texas, McCombs School of Business as the first in his family to graduate college.

Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our early investors, led by Honorary Chairs—Gary Farmer, Ricky D. Green, Carolyn & Jack Long—and Campaign Co-Chairs—Phil & Mary Beth Canfield and Robin & Gene Shepherd—we are thrilled to announce that we have already raised $23 million toward our $30 million goal. To amplify this effort, longtime champions Carolyn & Jack Long and Christie & Clint Bybee have pledged to match qualified gifts to the campaign, up to a combined total of $4 million to inspire others to join them.

As Luci Baines Johnson reminded us: “When all our young people get a quality education—not only your children and mine, but all children—all communities will benefit.”

Now is the moment to carry this momentum forward. More than a fundraising effort, this campaign is an investment in the future of our students, our workforce, and our community. I invite you to learn more about the Pathways to Opportunity Campaign, celebrate the generosity that has brought us this far, and consider how you can help unlock the power of education and a lifetime of opportunity for thousands more students. Together, we can help make our region one of the best in the state for young people to realize college and career success —building a stronger Central Texas for all.

With deep gratitude,

Michael Griffith
