The map above was created by Instagramer Matt Shirley and the data comes from his followers.

If you like this sort of map, you’ll probably like his book A Visual Learner’s Guide to Being a Grown-Up.

Here is the full list:

And here’s the same map without the arrows:

Every US State's Favorite State Besides Their Own Without Arrows

A few things I find funny:

  • West Virginia prefers North Carolina over Virginia
  • South Carolina like North Carolina who likes Virginia who likes South Carolina
  • North Dakota and South Dakota both prefer Minnesota over each other.
  • How few states reciprocally like each other besides Utah and Colorado, Maine and New Hampshire and Oregon and Washington.

Which ones surprises you the most?

European Countries With An Extensive “Right to Roam” https://brilliantmaps.com/right-to-roam/ https://brilliantmaps.com/right-to-roam/#respond Tue, 10 Mar 2026 13:32:40 +0000 https://brilliantmaps.com/?p=24460 European Countries With Some Form Of Right to Roam

Map created by RealWorldMaps
The map above shows which countries do and don’t have some form of “Right to Roam.”

The Right to Roam is a legal principle that allows the public to access and walk across certain private land or countryside without needing the landowner’s permission, as long as they follow specific rules.

More about it below:

Right to Roam in England & Wales

In England and Wales, the Right to Roam was created by the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 (CRoW Act).

What it allows:

People can walk on designated “open access land”, including:

  • Mountains
  • Moors
  • Heaths
  • Downland
  • Registered common land

Activities allowed:

  • Walking
  • Sightseeing
  • Birdwatching
  • Climbing (in some areas)

What it does NOT allow

The right is limited, meaning you cannot:

  • Camp without permission
  • Light fires
  • Ride bikes or horses
  • Drive vehicles
  • Hunt or fish
  • Bring dogs in restricted seasons (like around livestock)

Most access land is for walking only.

Scotland

In Scotland, the right is much broader under the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003.

People can access most land and inland water for:

  • Walking
  • Cycling
  • Horse riding
  • Wild camping
  • Canoeing

The rule is that access must be “responsible”, following the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.

Other European Countries

The other green countries on the map (besides Scotland) mostly follow versions of a Nordic-style public access tradition, often called “everyman’s right”, the right for anyone to access nature responsibly even on privately owned land.

Here’s how it works in each of the other green countries:

Norway

  • Known as “allemannsretten” (everyman’s right).
  • Allows people to:
    • Walk, ski, and cycle on uncultivated land
    • Camp in the wild for up to two nights
    • Swim and use lakes and rivers
  • Restrictions:
    • Must stay 150 m away from houses
    • No damage to crops or farmland.

This is one of the most extensive right-to-roam systems in the world.

Sweden

  • Called “Allemansrätten.”
  • Similar to Norway but even more culturally embedded.
  • People can:
    • Hike, cycle, ski
    • Camp temporarily
    • Pick berries and mushrooms
  • The guiding principle is “Do not disturb, do not destroy.”

Finland

  • Known as “Jokamiehenoikeudet.”
  • Allows:
    • Walking, skiing, cycling
    • Wild camping
    • Fishing with simple gear
    • Picking berries and mushrooms
  • Restrictions mainly protect farmland and private yards.

Denmark

  • More limited than Norway/Sweden.
  • Public can:
    • Walk in most forests and beaches
    • Camp only in designated areas
  • Access to private forests may be restricted at night.

Iceland

  • Public access is traditionally very open.
  • People can:
    • Hike across uncultivated land
    • Camp temporarily in remote areas
  • Increasing tourism has led to more restrictions in fragile environments.

Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania)

These countries allow relatively broad public access:

  • People can generally:
    • Walk through forests and countryside
    • Forage for mushrooms and berries
  • Camping may be allowed but often regulated in protected areas.

Their systems were influenced by Nordic traditions and Soviet-era public land access.

Germany

  • Public access laws allow:
    • Walking and cycling in forests and countryside
  • However:
    • You usually must stay on paths or designated routes
    • Camping on private land usually requires permission.

Czech Republic

  • Very open forest access laws.
  • People may:
    • Walk and cycle in forests
    • Pick berries and mushrooms
  • Camping is generally restricted to designated places.

Austria

  • Public can enter forests for recreation.
  • However:
    • Camping and cycling are more regulated.
    • Mountain areas may have freer access depending on the region.

Switzerland

  • Swiss civil law explicitly guarantees public access to forests and pastures.
  • Hiking and mountain walking are widely permitted.
  • Camping is sometimes allowed above the tree line but varies by canton.

Countries That Use (Or Have Used) The F-14 Tomcat, Yes The Plane From Top Gun https://brilliantmaps.com/f-14-map/ https://brilliantmaps.com/f-14-map/#respond Thu, 05 Mar 2026 21:07:28 +0000 https://brilliantmaps.com/?p=24390 Countries That Use (Or Have Used) The F-14 Tomcat

The map above shows the rather interesting fact that one two countries ever used the F-14 Tomcat Fighter and one of them was Iran.

More on how this happened below:

How Iran acquired the F-14

In the early 1970s, Iran was ruled by Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who was a close ally of the United States during the Cold War.

Why Iran wanted the aircraft?

Iran needed a fighter that could intercept Soviet reconnaissance aircraft, especially the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25, which could fly extremely fast and high over Iranian territory.

The Shah evaluated two advanced American fighters:

  • Grumman F-14 Tomcat
  • McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle

Iran ultimately chose the F-14, largely because its powerful radar and long-range missiles were ideal for intercepting high-altitude intruders.

The purchase:

In 1974, Iran ordered:

  • 80 F-14A Tomcats
  • 714 AIM-54 Phoenix long-range missiles

The deal included training, spare parts, and the construction of bases such as Khatami Air Base near Isfahan.

By 1979, 79 aircraft had been delivered before the Iranian Revolution ended US-Iran military cooperation.

The revolution and the aircraft’s survival

In 1979, the Iranian Revolution replaced the Shah with the Islamic Republic.

After the revolution:

  • US technicians left Iran.
  • Spare parts and support were cut off.
  • Many expected the F-14 fleet to become unusable.

However, Iran managed to keep many aircraft flying by:

  • Cannibalizing parts from other jets
  • Reverse-engineering components
  • Buying parts through black markets
  • Developing domestic upgrades

This engineering effort is one reason the Iranian F-14 story is so famous in aviation circles.

How Iran used the F-14 in war

The Tomcat proved extremely important during the Iran–Iraq War.

Early combat

The first confirmed combat success came in 1980, when an Iranian F-14 shot down an Iraqi helicopter.

Soon afterward the aircraft became the most capable fighter in Iran’s air force.

Air superiority role

Iranian Tomcats were used mainly for:

  • Long-range interception
  • Airspace patrol
  • Protecting oil facilities and cities
  • Escorting other Iranian aircraft

Because of their powerful radar, they could detect enemy aircraft hundreds of kilometers away.

Combat record

Estimates suggest Iranian F-14s shot down 100-150 Iraqi aircraft during the war.

Targets included:

  • MiG-21
  • MiG-23
  • Sukhoi Su-22

The Tomcat’s presence sometimes scared Iraqi pilots so much that they avoided areas where it was operating.

The F-14 Tomcat itself

Design and capabilities

The F-14 Tomcat was designed in the late 1960s by Grumman as a carrier-based interceptor for the US Navy.

Key features

Variable-sweep wings

  • The wings could move:
  • Forward for maneuverability
  • Back for high-speed flight

Two-person crew

  • Pilot
  • Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) controlling radar and missiles

Extremely powerful radar

The AN/AWG-9 radar could track 24 targets at once and engage several simultaneously.

Long-range missile system

Its main weapon was the AIM-54 Phoenix, capable of hitting targets over 160 km away.

Basic specs

  • Top speed: about Mach 2.3
  • Range: ~1,600 km combat radius
  • Engines: twin turbofans
  • First flight: 1970

The aircraft became famous in pop culture through the movie Top Gun.

Iran’s F-14s today

The United States retired the F-14 in 2006, but Iran kept operating them.

Estimates vary, but roughly:

  • 20–30 aircraft may still exist
  • Only a portion are fully operational due to maintenance issues

Iran has also developed new missiles like the Fakour-90 to replace older American weapons.

Why the F-14 Was One of the Most Advanced Fighters of the Cold War?

When the Grumman F‑14 Tomcat entered service in 1974, it was one of the most technologically advanced fighters ever built. It was designed primarily to protect aircraft carriers from long-range threats like Soviet bombers and cruise missiles.

Several features made the F-14 revolutionary.

The Radar and Missile System

The heart of the Tomcat was the AN/AWG‑9 radar, paired with the AIM‑54 Phoenix.

This system allowed the aircraft to do something no fighter had previously done:

  • Track 24 targets simultaneously
  • Engage up to 6 targets at once
  • Detect aircraft more than 160 km (100 miles) away

The Phoenix missile was enormous compared with typical air-to-air missiles:

  • Weight: ~450 kg (1,000 lb)
  • Range: up to 190 km
  • Speed: about Mach 5

This meant an F-14 could theoretically shoot down bombers before they even reached the carrier group.

Variable-Sweep Wings

One of the most recognizable features of the Tomcat was its swing-wing design.

At different speeds the wings moved automatically:

  • Forward position: better maneuverability for dogfighting and takeoff
  • Swept back: better aerodynamics for high-speed flight

This allowed the aircraft to combine:

  • Carrier takeoff capability
  • High-speed interception
  • Strong maneuverability

Few aircraft used this technology successfully; another famous example was the General Dynamics F‑111 Aardvark.

Two-Crew Combat System

Unlike many fighters, the F-14 had two crew members:

  • Pilot – flies the aircraft
  • Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) – controls radar, targeting, and missiles

This allowed the aircraft to manage extremely complex radar systems that were difficult for one pilot to handle alone.

The RIO was essential for managing long-range interceptions.

Speed and Performance

Basic performance specs:

  • Top speed: about Mach 2.3 (~2,485 km/h)
  • Service ceiling: ~50,000 ft (15 km)
  • Engines: two Pratt & Whitney TF30 turbofans
  • Combat radius: ~900–1,000 km depending on mission

The aircraft was also heavily armed:

Typical weapons included:

  • AIM‑54 Phoenix
  • AIM‑7 Sparrow
  • AIM‑9 Sidewinder
  • 20 mm M61 Vulcan cannon

Why the US Navy Eventually Retired It

Despite its capabilities, the F-14 had major drawbacks.

Very expensive to maintain

The aircraft required extensive maintenance hours per flight hour.

Later in its life:

  • 1 flight hour could require 30–60 maintenance hours

Engine problems

Early models had unreliable TF30 engines, which could stall during aggressive maneuvers.

Cold War mission ended

The Tomcat was designed mainly to stop Soviet bomber attacks on carriers.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, that threat largely disappeared.

Newer aircraft replaced it

The US Navy gradually replaced the Tomcat with the more versatile:

  • Boeing F/A‑18E/F Super Hornet

The Super Hornet is:

  • cheaper to maintain
  • easier to operate
  • capable of many mission types

The US Navy officially retired the F-14 in 2006.

Why the F-14 Became Iconic

Beyond its military role, the Tomcat became famous in popular culture through the movie Top Gun, starring Tom Cruise.

The film turned the aircraft into one of the most recognizable fighters in the world.

Where Europe’s Fruit Comes From At Different Times Of The Year https://brilliantmaps.com/europe-fruit/ https://brilliantmaps.com/europe-fruit/#comments Fri, 27 Feb 2026 17:10:22 +0000 https://brilliantmaps.com/?p=24360

The video above was created by Yannick Brouwer and shows where the largest supplier for different types of fruits to the EU comes from each month during the year.

Here’s what he had so say about the map:

When buying fruit and vegetables at your local supermarket, you might notice that the country of origin sometimes changes. I wanted to show how a network of farmers, traders and logistics companies from different countries provide all-year fruit.

Every product that is traded between countries is categorized using the Harmonized System. This HS code is for example used by customs to identify products and to determine import duties, but it’s also useful for trade statistics.

Statistical organizations like
@EU_Eurostat and http://trademap.org provide a lot of trade data for free. I used Trade Map and data from 2021. BTW, till the end of the year European citizens have access to monthly trade data.

For the visualization I wanted to get a bit experimental, it’s definitely not the most digestible map but I like how you can follow the individual emoji’s to explore patterns.

The basemap is based on Mapbox ‘Frank’, designed by @ClareMTrainor. I used Figma to colorize the map, paste the 🍋🍇🍑 in the right country and add the annotations.

What do you think?

Where 19 Different Types of Berries Native to North America Grow https://brilliantmaps.com/north-america-berries/ https://brilliantmaps.com/north-america-berries/#respond Fri, 27 Feb 2026 16:39:44 +0000 https://brilliantmaps.com/?p=24353

The video above was created by quite adept shows where 19 Different Types of Berries Native to North America Grow.

It’s part of a much longer video you can watch below:

From the original reddit post:

This gif is a simplified version of a much longer, slightly absurd berry video I made with the same data.

This is not where all berries in North America can be found.

It is just the native range of native plant species that produce fruity things that we call berries.

Some of these berries aren’t technically berries.

It also excludes varieties that are extinct in the wild, and species of plant that are not berry common or not researched enough to have readily available geospatial data.

The nineteen berries in this gif cover more than 115 species and subspecies of berry-producing plants in North America. From my research there are about 300 species of “berries” that are native to North America and are not extinct in the wild.

DATA

These are original distribution maps that combine data for multiple species and/or subspecies into individual maps for each “type” of berry.

They were created in Affinity Designer.

The two main sources used for these distribution maps are (1) Elbert L. Little Jr.’s many volumes of “Atlas of United States Trees” for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and (2) the North American Plant Atlas (NAPA) from Biota of North America Project (BONAP) which can be found at bonap.net – example.

The Little maps are from the 70s, the BONAP maps are accurate as of 2014.

These maps are accurate for the contiguous United States to at least the county level, Canada/Mexico/Alaska to at least the province/state level, and all other countries to at least the country level.

Not all of the berries in this gif are true berries, botanically speaking.

Further data source information can be found at the end of the full video. I superimposed the source maps on top of each other and onto a blank map and traced county by county to make each map, then I layered all nineteen maps on top of each other with transparency to show the rough diversity/density of berry species.

And finally how about this map by reddit user souppoder titled A Very Berry Map: North American Places Named After Different Types of Berries:

Places Yet To Be Settled By Humans In 1200 AD https://brilliantmaps.com/settled-by-1200/ https://brilliantmaps.com/settled-by-1200/#respond Wed, 25 Feb 2026 11:44:59 +0000 https://brilliantmaps.com/?p=24199 Places Yet To Be Settled By Humans In 1200 AD

I created the map above, because I still can’t really believe that New Zeeland escaped any human habitation until sometime between 1280 and 1350 AD!

Given it’s size it’s almost impossible to believe.

Its South Island (Te Waipounamu) is 145,836 km2, making it the 12th largest island in the world (larger than Java) and the North Island (Te Ika-a-Māui) is 111,583 km2, making it the 14th largest island in the world= (larger than Newfoundland, Cuba, Iceland or Ireland!)

And they remained uninhabited up until around the time of the Hundred Years War, while Australia was settled 50,000 to 65,000 years ago!

Below is a list from Wikipedia of places settled by people after 1200AD:
