Five years ago, the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) launched with a clear goal: to help everyone understand where digital content comes from and how it has changed along the way.

More than 6,000 members and affiliates have live applications of Content Credentials, the open standard published by the C2PA. This level of adoption marks the consolidation of a global movement. Content Credentials underpin provenance features across major platforms that enable millions of users to attach trustworthy metadata to their photos, videos, and other types of media.

The C2PA has recently published Content Credentials 2.3, the latest version of the open standard. This update makes it easier for creators to attach provenance data to their work and gives audiences more clarity on file history.

What’s new in v2.3

  • Live video: Content Credentials is now enabled for live video for applications to broadcast and streaming content.
  • Additional file types: C2PA manifests, which show a file’s history, are now available in plain text documents, OGG Vorbis audio, large AVI video files, and EXIF Original Preservation Images.
  • Clearer editing history: Users can now see more specific details about changes, such as resizing, markup, or redactions.
  • Better cloud integration: Organizations can now point directly to trusted information sources stored in the cloud, making it easier to share context at scale.
  • Stronger security: We updated how we validate data and detect tampering to ensure the information stays reliable.

This release follows the C2PA Conformance Program launched in late 2025, which helps ensure that any product displaying a Content Credential badge handles authenticity data accurately.

As content creation speeds up, the C2PA’s mission is more urgent than ever. The organization is focused on equipping creators with the tools to claim their work, giving audiences the facts they need, and helping platforms surface transparent media.

The launch of Content Credentials 2.3 is more than just another technical update. It is proof that the C2PA is not simply keeping pace with advances in media, but actively shaping how the world responds to human-generated and synthetic content. From live video provenance to generative AI transparency, Content Credentials is setting the standard for provenance.

A recent EU stakeholder consultation and associated survey reference ‘C2PA TDM Assertions.’ The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) would like to clarify that its Technical Specification for Content Credentials does not contain a standard assertion related to TDM (Text/Training and Data Mining) nor does it contain a standard assertion for Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology. The C2PA has publicly stated that such technologies are not in scope. However, the C2PA designed the Content Credentials specification to be extensible by third parties to meet a wide variety of needs that are not directly addressed by the core specification.

The Embassy of France Hosts Briefing on Mitigation of AI Harms, Content Authenticity, and Content Credentials (C2PA Open Specification) for International Community

WASHINGTON, D.C. — October 2, 2024

The Embassy of France in Washington, D.C., in collaboration with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), hosted the inaugural international briefing on content authenticity and the groundbreaking C2PA standard, Content Credentials. Held on October 2, 2024, at La Maison Française, this pivotal event brought together representatives from G20 nations and other aligned countries to engage in a vital discourse on the challenges and opportunities presented by AI. The briefing underscored the importance of authenticity and transparency in digital content as essential strategies for mitigating the risks associated with AI technologies.

French Deputy Chief of Mission in the United States, Agnès von der Mühll, inaugurated the event with a welcome to the audience. Embassy Spokesperson Sébastien Fagart joined the U.S. Principal Deputy Coordinator of the Global Engagement Center (GEC), Daniel Kimmage, in a Transatlantic Dialogue on transparency and authenticity in digital content. The dialogue, moderated by Liz Landers, shared critical perspectives on how key stakeholders across three continents are advancing efforts to cultivate a more authentic and transparent internet, both domestically and globally.

“In the age of artificial intelligence, informational integrity is more at risk than ever,” said French Ambassador to the United States, Laurent Bili. “We must act together around three priorities: building a solid scientific consensus, developing open technical solutions, and defining common international standards.”

C2PA Chairman Andrew Jenks emphasized the global scope of the open specification, noting its trajectory towards becoming approved by ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and its global, widespread adoption. The C2PA’s specification is currently being examined by the organization’s TC 171/SC 2 committee and is expected to become a global standard in early 2025. A diverse panel of stakeholders, including representatives from Sony, Publicis Groupe, Freedom House, and the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Cyberspace and Digital Policy, shared insights on how international companies and forums are actively engaging with, discussing, and implementing Content Credentials to advance the mission of promoting a healthy digital ecosystem.

“We appreciate Ambassador Bili and the French Embassy for hosting this event and taking a leading position on issues of transparency in media,” said Jenks. “When the Content Credentials specification from C2PA is ratified as an international standard next year, it will be the culmination of a worldwide effort to establish interoperable, standardized methods for providing transparency in digital media. Content Credentials represents the work product of over 200 global member organizations from across the media ecosystem, and we encourage all parties to participate in both C2PA and the ISO standardization process.”

This event underscores the growing awareness that authenticity and transparency through provenance standards are crucial in managing AI risks. The upcoming AI Action Summit in Paris in February 2025 will build on these discussions, further shaping best practices and driving global alignment toward a more transparent and authentic internet.

Amazon’s steering committee membership and adoption of Content Credentials will help enhance transparency for digital content

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — September 12, 2024

Today, the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) announced that Amazon has joined the organization as a new steering committee member. Amazon’s commitment to the C2PA advances the coalition’s mission to increase transparency of digital content and promote broad adoption of Content Credentials.

The C2PA publishes and maintains Content Credentials, a widely adopted standard that provides information about how and when digital content was created or modified. As a new member of the C2PA steering committee, Amazon joins a group of industry leaders that includes Adobe, BBC, Google, Intel, Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI, Publicis Groupe, Sony, and Truepic.

In joining the C2PA, Amazon will begin attaching Content Credentials to images created using the company’s Titan Image Generator v1 and v2, the company’s foundation AI models that allow its enterprise customers to generate realistic images or edit images. With this Content Credentials implementation, consumers will be able to verify the origin and authenticity of the AI-generated content

Furthermore, Amazon is also working to incorporate Content Credentials in AWS Elemental MediaConvert, a file-based video processing service that transcodes content for broadcast and multi-screen delivery at scale. This implementation will allow its customers – such as news organizations and sports broadcasters – to determine the provenance of the media they are sharing, allowing their distribution partners and news aggregators to verify the content’s authenticity before posting it on their platforms.

“At Amazon, we’re committed to the responsible use of AI, and it is imperative to drive transparency around digital content as use of generative AI accelerates,” said Vasi Philomin, Amazon Web Services’ VP of Generative AI. “All Amazon Titan-generated images contain an invisible watermark by default, providing a discreet mechanism to help reduce the spread of misinformation. Joining the C2PA and adopting Content Credentials represents another key step in our journey towards responsible AI innovation, and we look forward to joining forces with other steering committee members to develop meaningful tools that empower our customers to unleash generative AI’s potential safely and responsibly.”

“We are excited to welcome Amazon to the C2PA steering committee,” said Andrew Jenks, Executive Chair for the C2PA. “The implementation of Content Credentials into tools and services that reach both news organizations and consumers at large further continues the C2PA’s mission of promoting transparency in the digital media ecosystem.”

Introducing Official Content Credentials Icon https://c2pa.org/introducing-official-content-credentials-icon/ Tue, 10 Oct 2023 09:00:37 +0000 https://c2pa.dev-lfprojects5.linuxfoundation.org/?p=58 Content Credentials LogoToday the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) is introducing the new and official Content Credentials “icon of transparency,” a mark that will provide creators, marketers and consumers around the world with the signal of trustworthy digital content.

After a two-year collaborative journey of research, design, development and iteration, our community of technical leaders and UX design experts unanimously agreed on the new symbol that can inform people at-a-glance if Content Credentials is attached to a piece of media. We built the design around criteria identified early in the process as necessary for the icon to be a success, including ensuring the icon conveyed trust, indicated the presence of more information, could be immediately and universally understood, and simple and flexible enough to fit in across multiple contexts and on different backgrounds. The icon – a minimalist pin containing the letters “CR” – can be etched into media, such as images and video, in a way that seamlessly fits into creator and consumer workflows. In keeping with the guiding principles of the C2PA, it is also open source so it can be easily adopted by companies or developers into any platform, product, tool or solution.

Here’s how it works – simply scroll over the Content Credentials “CR” icon to reveal a “digital nutrition label” or list of ingredients, all in a seamless side-bar view. This list of ingredients will show verified information as key context so people can be sure of what they’re looking at. This can include data about a piece of content, such as: the publisher or creator’s information, where and when it was created, what tools were used to make it, including whether or not generative AI was used, as well as any edits that were made along the way. Privacy-preservation is a key pillar of Content Credentials, so anything related to identity is always optional.

The new Content Credentials icon will be integrated by major brands and industry leaders, including Adobe, Microsoft, Publicis Groupe, Leica, Nikon, Truepic, and many more, bringing a new level of recognizable digital content transparency from creation to consumption. With the rise in AI-generated content and viral deepfakes, it has become easier to spread misinformation and often difficult to decipher between trustworthy and untrustworthy content. From social platforms to online news sites to digital brand campaigns and much more, the goal is for this new Content Credentials icon to be so widely adopted that it becomes universally expected and, one day, becomes as ubiquitous and recognizable as the copyright symbol. With the support of partners and the creative community, the C2PA is gaining momentum and helping restore trust and transparency online at this critical time.

The official Content Credentials icon will be part of the C2PA’s international technical standard, and the steering committee companies and global communities like the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI) and Project Origin, will all work closely to drive broad awareness and adoption of both Content Credentials and this new icon – ensuring positive societal impact.

Additionally, we’ve launched a new online hub called ContentCredentials.org as a central place to learn more about Content Credentials, as well as an ongoing resource for consumers and creators alike to go and verify content – http://contentcredentials.org/.

See below for more on how our C2PA steering committee leaders are thinking about the new icon and incorporating it into their products and solutions:

Andy Parsons, Senior Director of the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI) at Adobe, said:

“Content Credentials can act as a digital nutrition label for all kinds of content — and a foundation for rebuilding trust and transparency online. Throughout history, visual iconography has acted as a powerful signifier for communication and culture. We are incredibly excited about the potential of the official Content Credentials “icon of transparency” to become a universal standard and expectation across culture online – helping make trust a fundamental principle in this new digital world. We look forward to continuing to incorporate Content Credentials and the new icon across our Adobe products and solutions.”

Andrew Jenks, Chair of the C2PA and Director of Media Provenance at Microsoft, said:

“For nearly three years, the C2PA has been instrumental in leading efforts to develop and deliver technological innovations that enable content and media creators to identify and protect their creative assets. We’re excited for the opportunity to build on these achievements with the availability of the new Content Credentials icon. The consistent, recognizable identifier will help consumers make quick, informed, and necessary decisions about the content they consume and share on the internet. We look forward to driving further standardization across the ecosystem through our organizational work on interoperable specs and standards.”

Jem Ripley, CEO, Publicis Digital Experience, said:

“Marketing relies on bold, thought-provoking content, which has the power to move people, tell stories and drive business outcomes. As a result, the importance of trust in that content, specifically where it came from, how it was made, and edited, is critically important. Of equal importance is ensuring our clients’ brand safety against the risks of synthetic content, and fairly and appropriately crediting creators for their work.”

Jatin Aythora, Director of BBC Research & Development, said:

“As a founding member of Project Origin and supporters of the work done by Adobe and others in this area, we believe that helping audiences understand where content has come from and how it has been made will be an increasingly critical part of our news ecosystem. Integrating these signals into our content is an important way to deliver on this goal – so we have started looking at how we can do this. But we won’t stop there. We will continue our collaboration with our media and technology companies and others in developing this work and look forward to this continuing as we address the challenges of disinformation.”

Mounir Ibrahim, EVP of Public Affairs and Impact of Truepic, said:

“The digitization of our societies and economies has left us highly reliant on digital content when making decisions. The proliferation and accessibility of manipulation, editing, and synthetic tools make transparency and authenticity in digital content necessary today. A universal Content Credentials icon is a tremendous step forward toward a more authentic and transparent internet. The recognizable icon will become a signal and opportunity for us all to learn more about the history of digital content before making a decision of consequence based on what we see and hear online.”

C2PA welcomes first advertising holding company to steering committee

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — June 5, 2023

Today, the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) welcomed Publicis Groupe, one of the world’s leading marketing organizations, as the newest steering committee member focused on digital media transparency and global adoption of content provenance. Joining a collaborative group of industry leaders including Adobe, BBC, Intel, Microsoft, Sony and Truepic, Publicis Groupe will serve as the first advertising holding company on the C2PA’s steering committee at a critical time for the advancement of authentication standards for digital media.

Establishing a clear and widely adopted standard for content authentication and transparency in assets has never been more needed, as artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and conversations on the usability of AI grow by leaps and bounds and misinformation continues to grow online. Publicis Groupe’s expertise across digital content, media production, data and technology will make it a key contributor to the C2PA’s leadership in increasing authentication and provenance of content. Beyond its deep industry knowledge, Publicis Groupe has also advocated for the responsible use of AI across its portfolio and tools, as well as with Marcel – its internal, custom-made AI platform, which includes a suite of features and services designed to connect Publicis Groupe employees to opportunities, knowledge, expertise, and to each other.

“We are pleased to welcome Publicis Groupe to the C2PA. The company brings deep experience in branding and marketing that will support and contribute to our core mission of establishing trust across all online media,” said Andrew Jenks, Chair of the C2PA. “Publicis Groupe joins a growing standards body dedicated to scaling the open specification across the digital media ecosystem.”

The C2PA steering committee is responsible for developing guidelines that address the most pressing issues around the use of content provenance methods, in additional to identifying target industries, establishing and overseeing technical working groups, and working with the network of partner organizations.

Publicis Groupe’s addition to the steering committee represents the latest milestone for the C2PA as it continues to build significant momentum in advancing the future of responsible digital media creation, publication and sharing. In April 2023, the C2PA released version 1.3 of its technical specification that includes expanded support for an array of media types, as well as generative AI transparency capabilities.

“Unquestionably, the capabilities of generative AI are evolving quickly, and the need for leadership is critical,” added Jem Ripley, CEO of Publicis Digital Experience. “We are committed to bringing our expertise across digital content, media, production, data and technology to the forefront for C2PA, driving innovation and protections for our clients’ businesses, while ensuring the authenticity and regulation of all AI content experiences in the future.

The C2PA’s progress since its creation in 2020 has been bolstered by strong partnerships with industry experts, policymakers, and academics, community feedback and partner organizations, including the Project Origin Alliance and the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI). The C2PA is focused on continuing its work with governments, platforms, publishers, and tool providers to foster trust and transparency online through global adoption of its technical standard for digital provenance.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — March 16, 2022

Today, the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) has added Sony Corporation (“Sony”) as the latest steering committee member to help provide creators, consumers, and others with opt-in, flexible ways to understand the authenticity and provenance of various media types. The C2PA recently released the world’s first industry-standard specification for content provenance to promote widespread adoption of tools to identify the source and history of digital content. Sony’s membership marks a major addition to the coalition as one of the world’s leading providers of electronics products and solutions for consumer and professional markets.

Sony is joining as a member of the C2PA steering committee, which includes founding members Adobe, Arm, BBC, Intel, Microsoft, and Truepic, as well as Twitter. As the C2PA continues its work to address the prevalence of mis/disinformation and to scale transparency and trust in online content, Sony’s deep expertise in the hardware space will be invaluable in accelerating progress toward global adoption of the technical standard for digital provenance.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome Sony to the C2PA as we pursue a robust, lasting and industry-wide standard to combat mis/disinformation online,” said Andrew Jenks, C2PA Chair. “The C2PA’s new technical specification is the blueprint for digital content provenance, and we believe Sony’s deep expertise, expansive reach, and support will help us continue our efforts to effectively scale an end-to-end global standard across the content ecosystem.”

Recently, the C2PA announced an important milestone with the release of version 1.0 of its technical specification for digital provenance. The open standard empowers global content creators and editors to create tamper-evident media, by enabling them to opt-in and selectively disclose information about who created or changed digital content and how it was altered. It is designed to be adopted by any software, device, or online platform, as well as by regulatory bodies and government agencies to establish standard methods for digital provenance.

“Sony’s Purpose is to fill the world with emotion through the power of creativity and technology,” said Kenji Tanaka, Senior Vice President of Sony Corporation. “While mis/disinformation continues to challenge society’s trust in digital content, we are joining C2PA to confront the matter at large. We are excited to collaborate with the other steering committee members of C2PA to develop meaningful standards for creators, consumers, and others.”

Moving forward, the C2PA remains focused on ensuring that its specification is used in ways that respect privacy and personal control of data with a critical eye toward potential abuse and misuse, and the C2PA will continue working with governments, platforms, publishers, and tool providers to accelerate progress for society at large.
