]]>Join us for CAIR-Minnesota’s 18th Annual Banquet — a powerful evening of unity, inspiration, and collective action.
This has been one of the most challenging years our community has faced, with a disturbing rise in Islamophobia and attacks on Muslims here in Minnesota and across the country. In the face of this, CAIR-MN continues to stand on the frontlines — providing legal support, securing mosques, empowering youth, and defending civil rights.
Under the theme “From Resistance to Resilience: Empowering Our Future Together,” we invite you to come together with community members, advocates, and allies to learn how we are resisting hate, injustice, and marginalization — and how we are building even more resilient, empowered communities for the future.

]]>CAIR-Minnesota Condemns Graduation Scheduling Conflicts Over Eid al-Adha at Burnsville and Hopkins High Schools
(MINNEAPOLIS, MN, 6/5/2025) – The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) today expressed deep concern and disappointment over the decisions by Burnsville High School and Hopkins High School to schedule their graduation ceremonies on June 6, 2025 — the same day as Eid al-Adha, one of the holiest and most significant holidays on the Islamic calendar.
Despite outreach by families, students, and community members urging both school districts to adjust the dates, leadership at Burnsville and Hopkins chose not to change the ceremonies. CAIR-MN has since received numerous calls from Muslim families distressed over the painful choice they now face: whether to fully honor Eid al-Adha through prayer, community, and celebration, or cut their observance short to attend what should be a momentous, once-in-a-lifetime graduation milestone.
“This is not just a scheduling oversight — it’s an equity and inclusion failure,” said CAIR-MN Executive Director JaylaniHussein. “Other Minnesota school districts, even those with smaller Somali and Muslim populations, have proactively adjusted dates to ensure all families can fully participate in both their religious observances and school milestones. By refusing to do so, Burnsville and Hopkins send an unfortunate message: that Muslim families’ concerns are less valued and less worthy of accommodation.”
CAIR-MN calls on both districts to meet with community leaders and families to discuss how to rebuild trust and establish clear policies that prevent such conflicts in the future. Given that Eid al-Adha, Eid al-Fitr, and the holy month of Ramadan will continue to intersect with school calendars in the coming decades, school systems must work proactively to avoid forcing students and families to choose between their faith and their achievements.
CAIR-MN remains committed to working alongside schools, districts, and the Minnesota Department of Education to ensure inclusivity and religious equity are upheld across the state.
CAIR-MN’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

CAIR’s Civil Rights Report Shows Islamophobia at All-Time High, with Viewpoint Discrimination a Key Factor
The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) today responded to CAIR’s newly released 2025 Civil Rights Report, “Unconstitutional Crackdowns,” which highlights a troubling increase in Islamophobic incidents nationwide. Alarmingly, the report shows that Minnesota leads the country in reported incidents targeting mosques, with 15 documented cases in 2024—three times higher than the next highest state, California.
According to the report, Islamophobia is at an all-time high, with CAIR offices across the country receiving 8,658 complaints in 2024, marking a 7.4% increase from 2023.

“Minnesota leads the nation in attacks against mosques now for the past three years, with 44 incidents—including arsons that have caused over $3 million in damages. This troubling trend must be reversed,” said CAIR-MN Executive Director Jaylani Hussein. “CAIR-Minnesota is working with state leaders to support nonprofit security grants and other efforts to ensure prevention. Additionally, Minnesota has seen an increase in other areas of Islamophobia, including the targeting of Muslim professionals.”
Among the documented incidents in Minnesota were multiple acts of vandalism, intimidation, and threats against mosques, particularly in St. Anthony and the Twin Cities metro area. These incidents ranged from attempted break-ins and harassment to violent physical attacks on worshippers.
The report also highlights three major national trends:
While the report paints a grim picture, it also highlights key victories for civil rights in 2024, including a 9-0 Supreme Court ruling against the federal No Fly List, legal victories for 25,000 individuals impacted by the Muslim Ban, and FTC actions to prevent the sale of Muslim user data.

(MINNEAPOLIS, MN, 6/5/2025) – The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Minnesota) will hold a press conference on Monday, June 9 at 3:30 p.m. CT to denounce President Donald Trump’s newly implemented travel and immigration ban affecting 19 countries—primarily Muslim-majority, African, and Southeast Asian nations.
The executive order goes into effect today, June 9, and bars or restricts travel from 12 countries, including Afghanistan, Iran, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Eritrea, and Haiti. It also imposes partial visa restrictions on seven others, including Cuba, Venezuela, and Laos. This action revives and expands previous bans targeting Muslim and African nations and now includes additional Asian countries.
Community organizations will join CAIR-Minnesota to speak to the local impact and challenges posed by the ban. While some may include directly impacted individuals, others will highlight the broader implications for Minnesota’s diverse immigrant, refugee, and BIPOC communities.
CAIR-Minnesota is responding by expanding its legal services, offering free immigration consultations, Know Your Rights education, and working with national partners on litigation and advocacy. The organization is also coordinating with community members to share their stories with media outlets and elected officials throughout the week.
CAIR-Minnesota urges Minnesota’s leaders and the public to reject this discriminatory policy and support the NO BAN Act, which would prevent future administrations from imposing similar bans through unchecked executive action.
